- AmyVernon, on 06/11/2009, -0/+21I can definitely vouch for No. 1. My car was almost overheating in a traffic jam; I put on the heat and I avoided it. I was freakin' melting, but I would have anyway if my car had died on the road and I'd have had to sit there waiting for a tow truck.
- JasonHilton, on 06/12/2009, -0/+16Dugg for Faraday cage, and not "rubber tires" like 99% of the people think.
- PigPong, on 06/12/2009, -0/+13Interesting and well written. Nothing ground-breaking, but good to know.

Burning Oil = Blue Smoke
Burning antifreeze = White Smoke
Running Rich = Black smoke - DaviDTC, on 06/12/2009, -0/+8Woman driver.
- smokestack, on 06/12/2009, -0/+8blown head gasket/cracked head.. that big white cloud is no doubt antifreeze..
I've had that experience.. if you ever want a james bond smoke screen to blind everyone a block behind you, just add antifreeze into the exhaust headers.. great stuff! - Domdogg123, on 06/12/2009, -0/+7I don't think it has a metal body. Fiberglass or whatever it is wouldn't conduct electricity.
- frankglez, on 06/12/2009, -3/+10Burning too much gas = Black smoke
Burning Oil = White smoke - warp99, on 06/12/2009, -0/+6What's the problem with ethanol? it acts as an octane boost giving 2-3 points. Iowa has ethanol year round (90/10 blend). It's sold as a mid-grade (89 octane) that's cheaper then the regular blend. You do know they have lots of corn in Iowa to make this stuff.
- colinmhayes, on 06/12/2009, -0/+4you CAN, however, use a less than 50/50 ratio in your cooling system. there is enough anticorrosion chemicals in a 65/35 mix and your engine will run probably 10-25° cooler.
- bdiggitty, on 06/12/2009, -0/+3I don't get the reference to the Corvette not functioning as a Faraday cage in the article. Can anyone explain?
- BoneStamp, on 06/12/2009, -0/+3And for this same reason, winter drivers can turn the heat OFF when they start the car to trap the heat and warm the engine more quickly.
- DaviDTC, on 06/12/2009, -0/+3Which have?
- mohrt, on 06/12/2009, -0/+3car and driver. problem is steering wheel i guess.
- inactive, on 06/12/2009, -2/+4Only a little water, and it is probably knocking like crazy and not going to run for very long. It could be oil, but it looks to white to be oil.
- Malik112099, on 06/12/2009, -0/+2"Pervious Picture" - WTF?
- strangewill, on 06/12/2009, -1/+3I'd have to disagree with #5 though, with a truck with a huge engine, the few horsepower is proportionally smaller than in a hybrid with a much smaller engine, not to mention A LOT of drag is caused by the air "caught" behind the car, and cars like the Prius are pretty bad with that in the first place (however this maximizes usable space, so thy generally don't put super-aero dynamic rears on cars). Plus the amount of drag an open window causes compared to the amount of drag the entire car has is such a small percentage it's ridiculous to act like it's a major issue. If you're driving fast enough that the windows down creates MORE drag than an A/C motor you're driving WAY too fast to be concerned about fuel efficiency anyway.
Either way if you're driving with enough care to give a crap about fuel efficiency, you have the windows down too. If you're doing 85mph than your fuel efficiency is like down 25% in the first place and to hear people try to pick apart which is more efficient at these ridiculously inefficient speeds (by a percentage point or two) is pretty stupid. - chevyorange, on 06/12/2009, -0/+2You got dugg down but honestly, I keep track of my gas mileage since my car was new. Air Conditioning (on the freeway) has not diminished mileage at all. All bets are off when in the city though.
- TacMedic, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1My guess would have been B
- davidlt, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1It's hard to believe that you don't see any difference on the freeway, but I'll take your word for it. But yeah, you are definitely going to see a huge drop in fuel efficiency when driving at slow er speeds. I don't care what kinda car you have.

- droppantsmurphy, on 06/19/2009, -0/+1I wouldn't use E85 in my car, as my engine would get SERIOUS knock...it isn't tuned for it. Sucks that I have to use 93 and pay the $3.10/G (as of now)
- marx2k, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1I win 100 infinities!

- marx2k, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1Looks like my car when I give it a SeaFoam treatment. 1/3 of the bottle into the intake. Smokes like that for a while

- strangewill, on 06/12/2009, -2/+3Hey notice how you can breathe in LA again? Yeah it's our stupid lib ideas.
Keep up or we'll have the air quality of China again. - Auxw4v3, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1ok so, "Anti Freeze" as you put it may not be required, but it is alot better than just plain water. It;s chemical properties allow it to cool down much faster and to a lower temperature than just regular water.
I really don't why people only refer to it as "Anti Freeze" but its proper name is "Engine Coolant" (its the green or sometimes orange stuff that you put in your cars radiator to keep it cool). its only because of the chemicals that they use in it that makes it not freeze in the winter and thus why some people call it "anti freeze". But if you think otherwise.. go ahead and try just running your car on water all summer.. you will probably need a new radiator in just a few months and your car will probably start overheating in no time.
Also another example of this.. its pretty much the same stuff that they use in "water cooling" setups for computers...but because of the chemicals they put in the coolant it helps the liquid cool off faster than just regular water. That is why it is recommended. I don't think you would go overclocking your computer system using just regular water.. so why would you do it in your car? - dizmoz, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1@Amy
I had a 91' Saab 900 that did the same thing... heat up to 4.7 billion degrees while stopped. Turned on the heat with fans fully on and would just start pouring sweat... just to keep my baby running. oh the good times we had. - warp99, on 06/13/2009, -0/+1@dgcarbs
The 90/10 blend mileage difference is minor, the octane rating is better, and it's cheaper than regular by about 10 cents. It's great if you need a mid-grade. Most people here in Iowa use the ethanol blend.
Now something like E85 which has up to 20% ethanol you will see anywhere between a 10%-15% mileage difference, which for me adds up to about 2-3 less mpg. E85 is about 45 cents cheaper than the 90/10 blend. - dgcarbs, on 06/13/2009, -0/+1@warp99 I dont know about you but in my car lose about 2-3 mpg's when using ethanol compared to regular gas
- warp99, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1The cloud is too large for it to be from the engine oil being burned. It's either:
A) antifreeze because of a blown head gasket or cracked water jacket
B) someone accidentally put diesel in it. - samby, on 06/12/2009, -0/+0One cool thing that I've found is if you have an oil pan leak - *not* a rear main seal leak or anything under pressure - and you're using 5W oil or 10W-40 you can go to 20W-50 and stop it.
Probably better for old cars like mine. Saved me a lot of money. - PsychoPNut, on 06/12/2009, -1/+1C D = ?
- peteophile44, on 06/12/2009, -1/+1Chair and Dashboard?
- db4dbms, on 06/12/2009, -1/+1I'm surprised/impressed they actually got Faraday's cage as the answer for 7, and that they didn't say "the tires insulate you...."
@bdiggity - it's been a while since i was in a Corvette (ever....?) but if there's metal from the frame of the car that you can touch on the inside, I believe you'd still get lightning bolted. - inactive, on 06/12/2009, -2/+2Water in the gas tank.
- frosted, on 06/12/2009, -1/+1#5: Most newer cars do not suffer from a decreased fuel efficiency with the air conditioning on.
- Malik112099, on 06/12/2009, -3/+2How are these myths which are debunked? FTA: 1) "Does turning the heat on really help cool an engine?" Yes. How is it dubunked if the answer is yes? Most of this is *****. #5 was on Mythbusters and the vehicle with the AC on ran out of fuel first on the highway. #7 is also BS stating that the car will conduct the electricity to the ground when in actuality lighting originates from the ground if it is a triggered strike. A natural strike on a car is just a random happening.
- linagee, on 06/12/2009, -2/+1Only in California and other such states.
- cosworth99, on 06/12/2009, -3/+21. Anti freeze does not make your engine run cooler.
2. Newer cars still use gas to power the AC compressor. Much smaller these days but it still lowers your mpg.
Drive it like you own it. - cerealjynx, on 06/12/2009, -3/+1Seven more reasons I'm glad I don't have a car anymore.
