- amellowtree, on 09/05/2008, -0/+12Despite all the bad press the Edsel got, it was an excellent car. It is based on the Ford Chassis, with Mercury parts (particularly the V8 engine.)
The marketing studies were conducted in 1950-1952, when the the GIs returned from the war, originally buying Fords, now wanted to step up, but at the time the Mercury was a bit too highly priced for this idea. The Edsel was designed to fill the gap. But, by the time the 1958 Edsel appeared the economy was in a decline, and the market was very soft; now people were looking for compacts, and imports. The Edsel was now too expensive for the people who had aspired to it back in 1952.
The real irony coming out of this was that the Edsel project manager Lee Iaccoca, learned form the mistake, and kept the market research quite, and added new ides to what became one of the m ost successful car launches -- the Mustang. Later he revived Chrysler with the same sort of short term development - inactive, on 09/05/2008, -0/+9That's actually a pretty sweet looking ride.
- ironeus, on 09/04/2008, -0/+7As unpopular as the design may have been there is still a fan club to this day.
- YodaJones, on 09/04/2008, -2/+8Agree. The columnist writes that the car is/was "butt ugly." Maybe his mother is butt ugly, but the Edsel isn't any more butt ugly than most cars from the same era.
- mgill3, on 09/05/2008, -0/+5I think cars from that era were extremely artistic. Those were the days when cars were designed by artists, rather than wind tunnels.
- byelobog, on 09/05/2008, -0/+4shikamooo...
I may have missed the "/sarcasm"
But just in case. It was a Ford Edsel Corsair. Different car from the Chevrolet Corsair. - Neiliosullivan, on 09/05/2008, -1/+5Reminds me of the car that Homer designed which bankrupted his millionaire brother.
- Danial, on 09/05/2008, -0/+4I suppose Alfa Romeo got its cues for its grille on all of their vehicles from the Edsel.
- KidVicious, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3"...the car was criticized from Day One for being too ugly, too expensive and vastly overhyped."
I call it... The Homer! - inactive, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3Pretty though!
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2Oh okay, so they got it right? I was getting kind of pissed that they'd post a photo of a completely different model like that . . .
I honestly think it would be a cool ride in fine condition like that. - mustang30266, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2The car in that picture is a Ford Edsel Corsair, try reading picture captions before bashing an article.
- elementdan, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2There is a photo of an Edsel
- rodrigo74, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Not really, there are Alfas from the 30's with the style of grille already...
- groo68, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1right you are mgill3, the car designs today are pretty bad, at least better than the ones in the 90's were.
the 50's through the 70's were the height of car design. at least there are a few new gems, yhough a better looking design costs more. - sdellboy, on 09/05/2008, -1/+2sdellboy: "You're a frigging idiot."
sdellboy: "Shut it. Or it's you and me outside."
sdellboy: "I've had enough of your lip."
*smack* - mustang30266, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1its interesting that you know what a Chevy Corvair is, however you have no clue what one looks like
- rodrigo74, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1You can find a fan club for pretty much anything, anyway.
- mangaaa, on 09/29/2008, -0/+0"Although as mechanically sound as other Ford products, the car was criticized from Day One for being too ugly, too expensive and vastly overhyped."
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. - MforMike, on 09/05/2008, -1/+1reminds me of GTA
- BatmanStan, on 12/16/2008, -0/+0marketing gone awry
http://godzillafiguresblog.com - duggdowncatisad, on 09/05/2008, -3/+2Not so old that mccain wouldn't have been old enough to drive one on day one.
- holyskeleton, on 09/05/2008, -4/+3why is this from wired?
- jkinman1, on 09/05/2008, -2/+0Because its not an Edsel, the car pictured was a Chevrolet corsair
- jordanmerle, on 09/05/2008, -4/+2Sort of a boring article, moving on.
- sdellboy, on 09/05/2008, -4/+2Journalist: "I've written this article about the Edsel."
Editor: "Great. Let's run it. Have you got a photo of the car you've written about?"
Journalist: "No."
Editor: "Okay. Let's put a picture in of a make and model totally unrelated to your article."
Journalist: "Fine by me. No-one will ever read it anyway."
Lazy, lazy journalism. Even Google Pictures delivers 100s of photos of the Edsel. - dvsbastard, on 09/05/2008, -4/+1Wow, this is really old...
/Duh - chilldeity, on 09/05/2008, -4/+1Zzzzzzzz...
- YodaJones, on 09/04/2008, -9/+2More Wired opinion drivel. Buried.
