- gotcheaprice, on 04/02/2009, -0/+15Too bad Hyundai is Korean.
But yeah, I agree, hopefully everyone pulls out something good. - imautobot, on 04/02/2009, -0/+13Why is it that concept cars tend to live in the realm of concept. Here's an idea of the auto industry. Stop teasing us with what could be and just make it a ***** reality already.
- bradleyland, on 04/02/2009, -0/+12So, does this mean all the ricers will take the gull wing doors off and put regular ones on?
- MelvinSchlubman, on 04/02/2009, -0/+10> Whether the Nuvis is purely a design exercise or an actual precursor to a production model remains to be seen.
Re gull wings:
1. How does their safety compare if you get t-boned?
2. How much space is needed in a (tight) parking lot to open those doors? - mattnyc99, on 04/01/2009, -6/+15somehow i feel like the japanese car companies might actually get their concepts to production while GM and Co. are going through bailout/bankruptcy hell on earth. SOMEONE needs to come up with some innovation...
- TeeBaagz, on 04/02/2009, -0/+9Don't sleep on Hyundai. They're coming up!
- crossmr, on 04/02/2009, -0/+7because they're still having trouble with basic grammar and spelling.
- AndrewNorris, on 04/02/2009, -0/+7DeLorean lol
- Lionhart, on 04/02/2009, -0/+6Hyundai. Like Sunday.
- TeeBaagz, on 04/02/2009, -0/+61. I don't see how just because the doors are gullwing style safety is compromised.
2. I think just about the same amount of space for normal doors. Also keep in mind the hinges seem to be set inwards toward the center of the roof. That should give it a better angle to open in tighter spaces.
Anyway I'm sure this is purely concept/design study. But very interesting. I like what Hyundai is doing lately. - twiztidsinz, on 04/02/2009, -0/+5If the others are, in contrast, made well... then why not?
They should require less work and therefor have a longer warranty. - NomortaL1, on 04/02/2009, -0/+5why?
- SuperCujo, on 04/02/2009, -0/+4Hyundai sales numbers have only dropped a very small amount compared to the absolute tanking that GM and Chrysler have suffered. Plus the American tax payer is not funding Hyundai so they can do whatever they want with their money.
Nevermind that car shows are a great marketing exercise in building brand awareness if you have that one outstanding concept car at the show.
Let GM and Chrysler die, the management killed them years ago. They are zombie car makers that will make the same mistakes they always have. And don't cry over the million jobs that will disappear, the other automakers will gain market share and need the extra capacity of the suppliers and line workers. It will balance out. - SuperCujo, on 04/02/2009, -0/+4BTW the HCD line of cars are named after the Hyundai California Design studio
- LordVance, on 04/02/2009, -0/+398 Accent here, picked it up when I got my license used for $500. Had 100k on it when I got the car and I put another 80K on it; so far it's only taken some new tires. It does eat up some oil though, but ***** - for the price they are damn fine cars.
- darkciti2, on 04/02/2009, -0/+3Ricers are clearly better engineers than the people that prototyped, engineered, and produced the car.
- darkciti2, on 04/02/2009, -0/+3I think they use gull-wings during prototype cars for the exotic "wow, this is the future" appeal at car shows. In most cases, it's relatively easy for them to retrofit the prototype vehicle to a standard door style.
More importantly, it allows for a better view of the interior at car shows. - Killmaster, on 04/02/2009, -0/+3I just think more cars need gull wing doors
- synergye, on 04/02/2009, -0/+3Whoever uses that script is a ***** *****.
- MelvinSchlubman, on 04/02/2009, -0/+31. With traditional doors there's that post between the front and back doors, which I presume is an opportunity for structural strength.
2. With traditional doors I can open my door ~1.5 feet to squeeze in when in a tight space. I'm skeptical about that with gull wing. But, I'd like to be proven wrong, for the coolness factor. - imautobot, on 04/02/2009, -0/+3When this baby hits 88 miles per hour, your gonna see some serious *****.
- SuperCujo, on 04/02/2009, -0/+3Have you driven a recent Hyundai? They are nearly on par with Toyota for quality. Way ahead of GM and Chrysler.
- DecoyQ, on 04/02/2009, -0/+3it's Hyundai numbnuts
- Ultramagnus0001, on 04/02/2009, -0/+3Our 95 Hyundai Accent has 250,000 miles and only major work was to replace rotors, drums and front bearings so far. Burns a little oil, about a quart before an oil change. They have come a long way, remember the Excel, now look at the Genesis.
- Chompy, on 04/02/2009, -0/+33. How much roadway is required for takeoff?
4. Can each door support the weight of a sidewinder *plus* machine gun, or just a missile? - inactive, on 04/02/2009, -0/+2Consumer Reports says the Hyundai Elantra is one of the 10 best cars:

-Edit: Caps completely necessary. - rdavidson3, on 04/02/2009, -0/+2I haven't had any repairs that I've initiated with them, but they found a problem with the sunroof they fixed without getting me to say anything about it. But, it took another 3 weeks between me getting the oil change to them getting the part in.
btw, I have a 2006 Tiburon Tuscani. - shark72, on 04/02/2009, -1/+3http://how-to-spell-its.com
- TeeBaagz, on 04/02/2009, -1/+3Yes.
- MelvinSchlubman, on 04/02/2009, -0/+2Donno about the content, but don't visit usinkorea.org if you value your eyes.
- SuperCujo, on 04/02/2009, -0/+1There was a concept not that long ago that used a modified gull wing arrangement, in that it had a hinge just above the window so the door opened vertically to start with.
- rdavidson3, on 04/02/2009, -0/+1I bought a new Tiburon Tuscani 2 1/2 years ago, and absolutely love it. After driving Ford and Dodge vehicles for years (both new and used) that constantly breakdown and have drag on my wallet, it is nice having a car that has cost me $0 except for oil changes. Even though I have a warranty, I haven't had the need to use it yet.
I doubt that I'll ever buy another domestic vehicle again, or at least until the quality of the vehicle gets much better. - whataSAMF, on 04/02/2009, -0/+1BADASS
- rdavidson3, on 04/02/2009, -0/+1I have a Tiburon Tuscani and last summer had it going 250 kph (~150 mph), and there were no shakes, rattles or whistling. The ride was really smooth.
- onelikeseabass, on 04/02/2009, -0/+1The gull wing is cool, but they always remind me of the Disappearing Car Door.
http://www.disappearing-car-door.com/
I would have posted a YouTube link, but their site seems to have that base covered. - darkciti2, on 04/02/2009, -0/+1I love my fellow Americans (of Korean descent). They are intelligent, they work hard, and they are just great people.
If I asked my friends about their Korean friends, maybe one would have something bad to say. Most of my friends would say great things about our Korean friends. - Ultramagnus0001, on 04/02/2009, -0/+1Ever heard the V8 Vantage.
- lukedinan, on 04/03/2009, -0/+1am i the only one that thinks this looks like a smoothed out aztec from the side/rear?
- Chompy, on 04/02/2009, -1/+2It's all in the fine print. That said, Hyundai/Kia/Daewoo have certainly gotten better than they used to be.
- SuperCujo, on 04/02/2009, -0/+1Talking out your ass...
Hyundai names all of their concept cars HCD-xx, it has nothing to do with Hybrid drivetrains.
Also, the Hyundai badge is symmetrical in outer shape, it has an oval around it similar in dimensions to Toyota (whom Hyundai have modelled their business on)
Hyundai's badge is just as symmetrical as Ford and Saturn. - darkciti2, on 04/02/2009, -0/+1I think this is going to be their answer to the 2010 Insight (which I've driven, BTW - coolest speedometer ever). Anyway, the HCD-11 is a bit more aerodynamic, and I have a feeling the HCD-11 means Hybrid Car D, revision 11.
The production name will likely be different.
Also, I hope Hyundai dumps that lame-ass crooked H badge!
Dear Hyundai,
PROTIP: Make your brand badge SYMMETRIC like all of the well-selling cars in the world (GM, Ford, Chrysler, Saturn, Toyota, Honda, and even Daewoo and Tesla have symmetric vehicle badges / logos). - nitrojunky24, on 04/02/2009, -1/+1I hear getting them to cover some stuff under warranty can be a real headache. if anybody can correct me on that or has experience ether way I'd actually be quite curious to know how the do on warranty repairs.
- jbmcb, on 04/02/2009, -1/+1Wow, what an ugly car. Hyundai has the quality part down, now they need to hire some decent designers and stop ripping off other car companies (Sonata=Jaguar, Azera=Lexus, Genesis=Benz, Tiburon=Nissan)
- inactive, on 04/02/2009, -4/+4Don't buy American.
- breakaway, on 04/02/2009, -1/+1Whatchu' think I'ma let you roll in a Hyundai?
