- datagod, on 07/10/2008, -2/+16To everyone who bought a hummer within the past 10 months: HWAAHAAHAAHAAA you motherfraking morons!
- inactive, on 07/10/2008, -0/+13People are ***** morons for buying that *****. If you want to increase your fuel economy, learn how to control your right foot. It is THE biggest reason why people get terrible fuel economy.
- inactive, on 07/10/2008, -1/+12Adding sugar to my gas tank helps me get 500 mpg.
- LoudMusic, on 07/10/2008, -0/+10Eh, to anyone who bought a Hummer, ever.
- inactive, on 07/10/2008, -0/+9I don't think the hummer early adopters are exactly geniuses either.
- allaboutdatiki, on 07/09/2008, -1/+10Perhaps CNN should forget the gimmick gadgets and look carefully at what really works. Devices that deliver the data through the OBDII port from the vehicle's ECU can help drivers become more fuel efficient. When you know *exactly* when your engine is sucking down the gas, you can become a more economical driver.
If your car has a built-in real-time fuel economy display, start using it ... all the time. If your car doesn't have the display, all is not lost ... you can add an after market device like the ScanGauge ...
http://digg.com/autos/Tapping_the_OBDII_Port_to_Im ... - Tenlow, on 07/10/2008, -0/+8That's an inexpensive sign. What did it say?
- mcmlxxii, on 07/10/2008, -0/+8Of course they are junk. If there was any merit to any of them, they would already be used by vehicle manufacturers.
I'm not sure why the government would have any interest in saying they aren't worth the money either - it's not like they are in direct competition or anything. - bman85, on 07/09/2008, -5/+12It's the government, of course they would say that they aren't worth the money.
Although most of them truly are junk. - inactive, on 07/10/2008, -3/+9Too perfect not to be true
I was driving a couple of weeks ago when I saw a guy driving a Hummer with the following:
1) License Plate: Sci Fi 6
2) The Jesus Fish
3) Bush/Cheney sticker
4) A sticker saying "marriage = (man bathroom symbol) + (woman bathroom symbol)
5) a 9-11 "We'll never forget" thing..
So, he thinks that Jesus would vote for Bush, destroy the environment, deny people the choice of loving who they choose and refuse to forgive.
Too funny.
p.s. His nasty fat ass wife was wearing a big fur so I guess Jesus would also kill animals for fashion. - temugen, on 07/10/2008, -0/+6You're ***** me, right? How can anyone justify these "vortex" scrap metal fittings in the intake!?
- jerryb123, on 07/01/2009, -0/+6A fool and his money are soon parted.
- Sharky35, on 07/10/2008, -0/+4Article says "devices that fit inside an engine's air intake valve"...Intake Valve? LOLZ
Author obviously does not own a car, - Tenlow, on 07/10/2008, -0/+4If you drive it economically, you will get economy. When you're "in the boost" you're driving with a heavy foot.
Plus there's a huge difference between a performance oriented turbocharger and an economy oriented turbocharger. With forced induction, you can effectively lower the size of the engine without reducing available horsepower and torque, so it uses less fuel to get the same amount of power. While you increase the needed fuel to compensate for the added air going into the engine, that's offset by the size difference of the engine giving you greater chances to save on gas. If you drive it properly, that is. - DontGiveADamn, on 07/10/2008, -0/+4Reminds me of those stickers they were selling a few years back that improved the reception on your cell phone. There's a sucker born every minute.
- Ghorkvos, on 07/10/2008, -1/+5All the more reason to get a turbo charger.
- rubaaan, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3im glad. stupid people deserve to get ripped off. lol
- 2reflective, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3They work really well, but they can be a bit of a pain to fit on modern cars. Still, well worth doing if you use your car a lot.
Tip: You can get the water4gas books free on the torrent networks. The parts you need cost between $50 - $100, so it's not very expensive - it just takes time to put together. - shagmin, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3The only people with Hummers that gas prices actually affect are people who were barely able to attain one in the first place and usually it's not their only vehicle anyway. The rest will just notice the cars around them are getting smaller and smaller.
On a side note I saw a Hummer towing a boat the other day...wish I had a camera. - Crasoum, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3I was expecting the hydrogen fuel cells that show up on craigslist to be there.
Really, they don't work, they produce at most 3 liters of hydrogen vapor in a minute (best yutube vid I could find of homemade production), and to run an engine you need about 5 liters of hydrogen vapor a second. That equates to production of about 1% of the fuel you need. If you factor in you need a beefy alternator and end up running the engine harder to run the alternator the cost savings don't equal out.
As for the people who actually see improved gas mileage that can be explained in many ways, but the most likely case is because you want to see better gas mileage you stop doing things to reduce gas mileage and attribute it to the fuel saving devices.
Another scam I was introduced to two years ago were gas pills, which you'd stick in your tank to improve your gas mileage. All they were was mothballs while the company who made the pills was really just a big fricken MLM scam.
So it really comes down to this, people love to make money off of fear, uncertainty, and doubt. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is; it is also likely a front to separate you from your money. So instead of wasting money on stuff that does not work, don't drive as hard, coast longer to your stops, take longer to get up to speed and do all your errands in one go. You'll save money that way guaranteed, the rest, is at best a craps shot. - welshie, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3In other news Big Oil sets up a subsidary: Snake Oil.
- GlassAgate, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3I saw one for $4.75. Also, a buddy says that he saw
one at Wal-Mart for 1.99! What a bargain! - qwertydvorak, on 07/10/2008, -1/+4we could pop out the stereotype of the liberal driving a volvo with 9000 bumper stickers on the back.
- mcmlxxii, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2I don't, it's not my government, I don't think the one that apparently governs my country is any better, but I really don't think that in this case oil companies are about to lose out to a handful of magnets round fuel lines. There is strong consumer demand for vehicles that return more mpg, smaller, cleaner, leaner cars. The government isn't recommending against them is it?
- mphree, on 07/10/2008, -1/+3Buried as "***** Obvious."
- quazywabbit, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2true a person TRYING can do better, but I know people that can't do that and for those cruise control might be there best hope. So for people that don't know how to do that I would recommend them using cruise control when possible and safe (not in busy traffic)
- kolinkoolface2, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2damn thanks, i wish i would have know that earlier, my dad and neighbor paid about a 100 bucks (50/50) My dad is an engineer so he knows how to do all this stuff, but they do actually work. They best kind of car to use them on is pre-95 4 cylinders because they are simple and do not have nearly as many computer chimps and the like in them.
- xaxxon, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2gah! All these sites saying to use cruise control to save gas piss me off. Cruise control is better than constantly being on the gas off the gas, but a person TRYING to do better can. cruise control will waste a ton of gas trying to get up a hill at your set speed and then bleed the speed you could gain going down the other side to maintain your speed.
- TheUngod, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2Your left foot is pretty important too if you have a standard
- Angostura, on 07/10/2008, -2/+4Well, that about wraps it up for the second law of thermodynamics.
- Maas, on 07/10/2008, -1/+3To sum up. Stupid people fall for crap. Intolerant left wingers own Digg.
Nothing to see here. - liuite, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2though most gadgets won't improve fuel mileage, I will also say that some skeptics also go too far to argue that it is impossible to improve efficiency by 40%. I.C.E. is at best 24% efficient, a 40% improvement means the engine is only 34% efficient, thus still wasting 66% of the fuel. If 34% efficiency can't be achieved, then we should move on to electric propulsion. I predict that within three years we will see at least 30% improvement in efficiency as long as gas stays at above $4 a gallon.
- inactive, on 07/10/2008, -1/+2um...what? A turbocharger will only increase the fuel needed. When you add more air (in this case, MUCH more air), you need a lot more fuel. Yes, turbocharged engines do have a much lower compression ratio, but the added air needing more fuel is a much bigger threat to fuel economy. I have a VW GTI and when I stay out of boost, I can get 30+ mpg. If I am in boost all the time, I get less than 15.
- SmokinOkie, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1What the **** does your comment have to do with the story? You sir are a friggin moron!

- mattnyc99, on 07/09/2008, -4/+4saw a sign for $5.15 the other day...
- inactive, on 07/10/2008, -2/+2Biggest lie going...
If you don't like Bush or the Neocons who call themselves "Christians", you are a "Liberal"
Biggest load of sh*t out there.
But hey, when you Bush bot nutbars are on life support and can't speak to the facts, I guess it is all you have. - BradHAWK, on 07/10/2008, -0/+0catalyst: I don't think that word means what you think it means.
- smartmlp, on 07/10/2008, -2/+2To anyone who is thinking about buying one now: I bet you are glad you waited.
The H3 is quite a capable off roading machine for those who like to have fun off road. - bman85, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1I think there's always an agenda. There is a ton of people making a ton of money off of our extensive use of oil.
If you still believe that all of our government officials are public servants, by the people, for the people, then I think your Naive. - lisawylde, on 07/11/2008, -1/+1I saw a mudcrab the other day. Horrible creatures.

- sbi247, on 10/06/2008, -0/+0Be sure to read my article "Useful Fuel Saving Tips to Improve Gas Mileage" that outlines some easy ways to get more gas mileage. http://runningcaronwater.wordpress.com/2008/10/03/ ...
- kolinkoolface2, on 07/10/2008, -7/+5yea tell that too my face. My dad and i put one of those water for fuel deals together. IT actually works. It's not the hydrogen burning, its the way that the hydrogen is used as catalyst with the gasoline and burns it more efficiently through the injectors. I am getting around 23 mpg in my '95 wrangler that normally gets 14 mpg. Whatever, sometimes you have to go out and find out for yourself what is bull *****, but this seriously works, you just have to know what you're doing.
