- inactive, on 10/20/2009, -3/+459OnStar: Hello, this is OnStar, how may I assist you today?
Thief: Yeah, so, I stole this car and it's not running anymore... - clawzkatt, on 10/20/2009, -64/+455I would never let anyone have that control over my car.
(what if i was being chased by the government!?)
but seriously.
no one's controlling my car but me. - BubblesTheChimp, on 10/20/2009, -3/+342---------
This story brought to you by OnStar and General Motors.
--------- - subliminali, on 10/20/2009, -9/+280"no one's controlling my car but me".... unless you get carjacked
- amoore2600, on 10/21/2009, -8/+266DRM for your car.......
- prisoner24601, on 10/20/2009, -5/+255"The man pointed a sawed-off shotgun at Ruiz and ordered both men to get out of the Tahoe and empty their pockets. Ruiz's cousin at first refused, but Ruiz told him to obey, knowing that OnStar could find the stolen truck with a global positioning system."
Dude, who argues over pocket change with some probable-meth-head holding a shotgun? Or over a car for that matter. It's just stuff people. The only thing more sad than a man who won't stand up for himself is one who gets himself killed over property. It's brave to risk your life to protect your wife and kids, it's stupid to risk your life to protect your 22" spinners. - shnuffy, on 10/20/2009, -7/+234I can't wait for disgruntled OnStar employees to start completely ***** with people.
- BREZZZ, on 10/20/2009, -1/+202I would never opt for this, because I might have to use my car for a crime. You never know.
- adale1, on 10/20/2009, -0/+169OnStar: Please hold well I look into that for you.... *doors lock*
- akchrs, on 10/21/2009, -1/+167Onstar: We show your airbags deployed are you ok?
Driver: Huh? I'm fine. My airbag didn't go off.
<BOOOOOM SKSSSSHHH>(airbag)
Onstar: How bout now? - fotoman607, on 10/21/2009, -6/+126Does this mean my car can shut off like my cell phone if I miss a payment?
- one1plus1one, on 10/21/2009, -3/+121I wouldn't dismiss BREZZZ's point too quickly here.
For example, let us imagine a scenario in which Halle Berry's career tanks, and she's...umm, I don't know, let's say she's robbing a rural gas station one fine lazy country afternoon. (That's what stars do when their careers tank.)
And then let's say that she just so happens to be dressed like this on that day:
http://poponthepop.com/images/gallery/halle-berry. ...
And then let's say, for argument's-sake, that she jumps in, car-jacks me (no pun intended), and points a gun in my face, and says, "Get me out of here big boy and I'll show you some serious gratitude all day long."
Now would I want the General Motors Corporation sending signals down from the sky, ruining my one and only chance to mix up my DNA with Halle Berry?
I think not.
In fact I think any wise rational man in such a situation will agree that sometimes in life a man needs to make a quick get-a-way in order to mix his DNA with Halle Berry's DNA.
So upon careful consideration and contemplation (pondering the above photograph of Halle Berry for a good 5 to 7 minutes) I have come to the conclusion that sometimes it's not a good thing to turn over the possible genetic destiny of my unborn children to General Motors. - ColinGreig, on 10/20/2009, -1/+102"Ruiz said police returned his Tahoe, cell phone and wallet to him that night. The only thing they didn't get back was some cash taken from his cousin."
lols @ cousin - RogerStrong, on 10/20/2009, -0/+100Or your girlfriend.
(Granted, if this technology stops the theft of girlfriends AND vehicles, it could end country music as we know it.) - WhiskeyLemur, on 10/20/2009, -1/+88I swear, officer, I didn't *mean* to run that red light - OnStar made me do it!
- charlietuna, on 10/21/2009, -2/+85A while ago here in NYC a yuppie chick at a local trendy bar mouthed back to a punk holding up the place with a gun. She said "what are you gonna do, shoot me?".
So he did. - errik03, on 10/21/2009, -3/+81insurance
- Brak710101, on 10/21/2009, -7/+80"Officers quickly contacted OnStar and got Ruiz's permission to find the vehicle."
Put the tin-foil hats away. - jonlarge, on 10/21/2009, -5/+77I'm pretty sure "the government" has the means to easily find you and capture you, regardless of whether or not your car has OnStar.
- FUZE, on 10/20/2009, -0/+70I wish I had OnStar on my mountain bike last week...
- suprememilo, on 10/21/2009, -4/+63They shoulda installed onstar in balloon boy's balloon.
- borez, on 10/20/2009, -8/+61What if somebody stole your car though?
- BossKey, on 10/20/2009, -1/+47"Code zero zero zero. Destruct. Zero."
- EddiePotato, on 10/21/2009, -4/+49Innocent people who've been injured or have lost loved ones in high speed police chases would probably use a word other than "fun" to describe the whole thing.
- ReaverKS, on 10/21/2009, -2/+41Such a jerk, why do you have to come in all logical and ***** and totally destroy 90% of the posts in this article?
- twinklyJesus, on 10/20/2009, -7/+44"Dude, who argues over pocket change with some probable-meth-head ..."
Dude, they were in a dark parking lot at 3 am talking on a cell phone...we're not talking about Rhodes Scholars here. who could they be calling at 3 am? Mom? Or, "Dave" to score some weed...? - borez, on 10/20/2009, -1/+38Steve McQueen does NOT approve.
- SuicideMouse, on 10/21/2009, -1/+38I dugg you up but not because I'm glad she got shot. If someone has a ***** gun and is behaving in a threatening manner, you do not ***** taunt them.
- perry8472, on 10/21/2009, -1/+37"ONSTARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!"
- Zippo, on 10/21/2009, -0/+36If the government is chasing you, OnStar is the least of your issues.
If they want you to stop, they'll stop you. One way or another. - LonesomeFighter, on 10/21/2009, -2/+36@stronsad. i don't get it, is the kitchen that far away from the bed room that she needs to drive down the hallway?
- imsohigh, on 10/21/2009, -0/+34I registered and logged in just to tell you how awesome that was.
- ricksite, on 10/21/2009, -8/+42OnStar? Nice coverup. We all know that the car really just broke down shortly after being stolen. The guy should have stolen a Toyota.
- jasvll, on 10/20/2009, -17/+50Hooray. Now we can be truly free to operate our vehicles (with the consent of corporations and government, of course). Just be sure to keep your license and registration and inspection up to date and make sure all your parking tickets are taken care of promptly and don't exceed the speed limit for more than 4.3 seconds and don't run that dark yellow light and don't question that police officer's radar gun...Failure to comply will result in immediate revocation of your vehicle operation privileges.
- spookyttws, on 10/21/2009, -0/+32Just hope your ex girlfriend doesn't work for Onstar, subscribers.
- jugglingjon, on 10/21/2009, -0/+32They got the owner's permission to shut the car down.
- sfackler, on 10/21/2009, -3/+34You're making up a conspiracy.
- rif42, on 10/21/2009, -2/+32@clawzkatt
"I would never let anyone have that control over my car.
(what if i was being chased by the government!?)"
It is a very stupid idea to try to outrun the police in a car that carries your own license plates. - TAGline, on 10/21/2009, -0/+30They would have to install it on the dog's collar too!
- jdames1980, on 10/21/2009, -1/+31If it was a Toyota the opposite would have happened. The car would have accelerated to over 120 mph until deadly impact.
- AmnesiacJack, on 10/21/2009, -5/+35For now any ways.
Incidents like this will "prove" why this technology needs to be in every new vehicle. It could even remove vehicle theft completely (the risk of being trapped in a stolen vehicle that won't move, the doors are locked and the cops are closing in) then laws / regulations / new power sources will force older vehicles that don't have this technology off the road until they are the only ones left.
Not trying to make up a conspiracy or any thing just explaining how the flow of technology and advancement works. - KibblesnBitts, on 10/21/2009, -1/+30Dugg for the best comment ever.
- iDiggYa, on 10/20/2009, -1/+29Sorry for making you chase me, but OnStar wouldn't let me hit the brakes!
- LJSeinfeld, on 10/21/2009, -3/+31The only condition you want to see your stolen vehicle in is on fire.
Trust me, no matter what happened to it, you'll never feel that it drives the same. - FelliFel, on 10/21/2009, -2/+28and it was good
- ewtwetwww343433, on 10/21/2009, -3/+29yes, what did you think this service was leading up to?
- DRG2003, on 10/21/2009, -0/+25From the OnStar site:
How can OnStar subscribers opt out if they decide they don’t want their vehicle to have Stolen Vehicle Slowdown?
Subscribers can request that Stolen Vehicle Slowdown be disabled on their vehicle, if equipped. To do so, the subscriber must press the blue OnStar button in their vehicle and ask that the Stolen Vehicle Slowdown service be disabled. Disabling Stolen Vehicle Slowdown will not affect any of their other OnStar services.
Can subscribers opt back in once they have opted out of Stolen Vehicle Slowdown?
To re-enable the slowdown service, the subscriber must bring the vehicle to a GM dealership so a re-enablement procedure can be performed. There may be a cost to the subscriber for this re-enablement procedure. This feature cannot be re-enabled remotely (over the air).
This would lead me to believe that Big Brother wouldn't be able to randomly shut down your car for some sort of noncompliance, but then again who knows. - Methusalah, on 10/21/2009, -0/+25@Nerys: You just made up that statistic. http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/abstract/c02.htm states that from 93-02 only 45% of carjackings in the US even involved a firearm.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 10/21/2009, -5/+27Dugg for honestly.
Good luck with your probably life of crime! -
