- elbm, on 07/06/2009, -9/+115No wonder they need to be reminded to change thier driving habits-- look at the pic they are all driving on the wrong side of the road.
- charlie6969, on 07/06/2009, -2/+50Now, THAT is freaky!
And apparently, very effective. - waddling, on 07/06/2009, -0/+43I moved to NZ 4 years ago and there is a ton of advertising meant to shock and scare people here. The police are the WORST for the death and dismemberment ads. Some stuff I am surprised they can air. Here is an example of a tame tv ad for drunk driving: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcuYXGCRw9M
- cnot3, on 07/06/2009, -2/+37I just don't trust anything that bleeds for five days and doesn't die...
- flyingsquirle, on 07/06/2009, -2/+37What a huge waste of blood, don't they know we are in a shortage!!!
- mariowario, on 07/07/2009, -3/+37Woooosh
- TomNZ, on 07/06/2009, -2/+32"Dammit, I couldn't tell what that was as I passed by. Sipping Yellowtail driving 140, I just assumed it was one of those child abuse things. So, I beat my kid in the backseat harder so he wouldn't get his hopes up."
One of the comments on the article. Win! - jeddyftb, on 07/06/2009, -0/+26I lived in NZ for four months as a student.
The PSAs that show on TV there are the scariest things I have ever seen:
i.e.
http://vodpod.com/watch/764835-new-zealand-psa
This does not surprise me at all - cnot3, on 07/06/2009, -2/+28no one pays attention to billboards when they drunk drive
- DeadFox1, on 07/06/2009, -0/+21wow! that was intense! we need that here in the US!
- thefort, on 07/07/2009, -1/+19Yes.. yes we do
- ygeoff419, on 07/06/2009, -4/+22+1 internet for this man!
- heavystone, on 07/07/2009, -0/+15Now we just need a wet T-shirt billboard! That would slow people down to have a good look!
- alamedaman, on 07/06/2009, -0/+12Simpsons did it- in Itchy and Scratchy the Movie
- wily6, on 07/06/2009, -0/+12Good idea, but a 0% death toll? I'd like to see the statistics behind that number.
- dazparkour, on 07/07/2009, -1/+13People died: 0
- LittleDas, on 07/07/2009, -0/+11Wow, that really was intense. I lived in Australia till I was about 6 and that line, "If you drink then drive you're a bloody idiot." stuck with me. Mostly because I was 6 and I had an excuse to say "bloody idiot" but it's really a great line.
- Krinkov, on 07/06/2009, -7/+18I see that thing causing WAY more wrecks than its going to prevent...
- rjshatz, on 07/06/2009, -1/+12Well *****, can't complain if it works.
- boomcubist, on 07/07/2009, -0/+10I think this is worse than that. From the UK:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEVbSB2vz_8 - MrCrissypoo, on 07/06/2009, -1/+11If we incorporate this idea for drunk driving, I'm sure accidents would go down substantially.
- junaeroplane, on 07/07/2009, -0/+10but is there any way to get the blood to run UP the billboard?
- dragonlink2, on 07/07/2009, -0/+7that ad is the win, totally caught me off guard. we definitely need those types of ads here. the best we have are stupid ads with cops opening the doors of cars full of beer. yeah, that's effective..
- TrouserJazz, on 07/06/2009, -0/+7Billboards with frosty lager coming out of them on hot dry days? I think you're on to something...
- IamNOTmrT, on 07/07/2009, -0/+7In the last few months if seen the following NZ stories on the Digg front page:
- Packs of women hunting in groups for sex partners
- A jealous prostitute murdering one of her clients for seeing another hooker
- A teen selling nude pics of his mother on an internet auction site
- Naked flight attendants
and now bleeding billboards ..... what the hell is going on over there? It was a pretty sane and mundane place when I lived there. - junaeroplane, on 07/07/2009, -0/+7riding in the back seat?
- asgardshill, on 07/06/2009, -4/+10What an attention-getter - if you were selling feminine hygiene products.
- cicadasong, on 07/07/2009, -0/+6I know it's wrong but I laugh at this ad everytime I see it. For some reason I just can't buy into it as being genuine maybe.
- inactive, on 07/07/2009, -0/+6HAHAHHAHA. Spinning, spinning, spinning-BAM!
- heavystone, on 07/07/2009, -0/+6***** your "Epic Win".
- anakast, on 07/07/2009, -0/+6They use the left overs from dead bodies in accidents.
- amoeba, on 07/07/2009, -1/+6As a fellow NZer I'd like to say that the roads are perfectly fine and the road toll is actually decreasing
http://www.transport.govt.nz/research/Road-Toll/
I actually prefer the scary wheel of fortune death guy at the intersections: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgQyaBNBao0 - thefort, on 07/07/2009, -1/+6Yeah but if they see them when they are driving sober, they are more likely to keep driving sober and take a cab or carpool next time they are drinking. It has had amazing results in New Zealand, why not be effective in the US as well?
- Lewie, on 07/07/2009, -0/+5"Don't confuse correlation with causation..."
True, but what other variable has been changed? Obviously the accidents have been caused by poor driving in the rain. People are reminded to slow the ***** down: *POOF* magically no deaths. Your comment might be more valid if they said "An increase in the birthrate of wallabies is responsible for the reduction of spring deaths." - DahRecords, on 07/06/2009, -0/+4NM fixed.
- Jeepinator, on 07/06/2009, -2/+6You are stupid.
- deadguysleeps, on 07/07/2009, -1/+5Try reading the replies by the third comment on that site:
"Trust me, you don't want to get with a chick that is a psych major.
To begin with, most psych majors these days are women. There is the common joke that most people that go into psychology do so to try and figure out what is wrong with them, and while that is a gross over exaggeration, there is still a grain of truth to it. Plus, if you're already overly emotional or semi-paranoid, learning about psychological conditions will only make it worse.
See where I'm going with this?
You frequently find these totally hot girls that have minor insecurities that often blossom into being nearly a psychosis just because they start (improperly) pscyhologizing themselves.
Oh, and it gets better.
Whenever you go on a date with a girl like that, they instantly try to psychologize you, and they think they are being sly about it. If you hold your drink a certain way, they will go nuts trying to analyze that, and will then start asking you about your mother.
One girl went so far as to try and judge my personality by asking me what my type was (referring to girls). I looked at her and told her that my type was the kind of girl who could relax and leave the psychology in the office. It was a short date.
Yes, this is based on personal experience, and while not all of them are like this, there are a fair few that are.
Be careful with the psych majors. " - ShadowFoxxx, on 07/06/2009, -2/+6That's just terribly distracting. You put something like that on the freeways of L.A. there's bound to be many more accidents, on the count of people rotating their heads around like owls, going, "WTF was that?!!!"
- bossm4n, on 07/06/2009, -0/+4And cat decapitations by mice are at an all-time low.
- TrouserJazz, on 07/07/2009, -3/+7@diemunkiesdie yes, most countries drive on the right... but many countries drive on the left. What's your point?
FTA: Research in 1969 by J. J. Leeming showed countries driving on the left have a lower collision rate than countries driving on the right. It has been suggested this is partly because humans are more commonly right-eye dominant than left-eye dominant. In left-hand traffic, the predominantly better-performing right eye is used to monitor oncoming traffic and the driver's wing mirror. In right-hand traffic, oncoming traffic and the driver's wing mirror are handled by the predominantly weaker left eye. Some countries that have switched to driving on the right, such as Sweden, have seen their collision rates increase out of proportion to the increase in traffic volume - gbhall, on 07/07/2009, -0/+4This PSA commerical just started airing in New Zealand, I see it often, and it's the most disturbing ad in my opinion.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RDLnj1iTpk - mashedup, on 07/07/2009, -1/+5Living here in NZ I can tell you It's not effective - unfortunately. Since 1994 NZ has screened and bill-boarded shock ADs but they haven't made a dent in the stats - actually our road casualties stats are worse than ever. The real issue is that many of our roads are sub standard and the millions they give to advertising agencies each year would be better spent improving the roads themselves which could actually save lives. But that would be too mundane for our public servants who would rather fancy themselves as would be cutting edge movie producers.
- sgerwel1985, on 07/06/2009, -1/+5Call me crazy but that is pretty damn creative and i'd imagine, effective. A lot better than those stupid ass "buckle up" billboards in the US that show some lame ass fake cop.
- CressCrowbits, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3Be great if Digg had a feature that if you make a comment which shows you didn't read the article properly, just doesn't post it and pops a 'Are you sure you RTFA?' error.
- ZeroCubed, on 07/06/2009, -5/+8Now we need one for gun control - every time someone is shot, they should have a child bleeding billboard. Hopefully it'll encourage responsible gun control laws - like, not letting every hillbilly or gangster in the country own twenty of them.
- crowbarred, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3My country is far to much in the news these days
- dosher199, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3You should see our alcohol abuse ads.
First time round, the shock advertising works
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4d1ICI_uig
The third or fourth time round, it's funny. - diggsocks, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3I blame the British.
- TrouserJazz, on 07/06/2009, -0/+3Yeah, NZ doesn't have a problem with guns (although there's plenty out there) so no need.
