- Imissnaptime, on 07/20/2009, -23/+316I honestly believe that this "sport" was just created so people can get drunk in public at 2pm.
- serif69, on 07/20/2009, -3/+217I don't need a sport for that.
- huskypride86, on 07/20/2009, -9/+128How about NASCAR mixing things up once in a while and highlight a race going the other direction? I say lets give America the Bizarro 500. Right turns FTW!
- freeridstylee, on 07/20/2009, -15/+133It's only more popular in the US because there's a lot more room on the cars for advertising. F1 will never make it in the US unless they start towing billboards.
- pathouston22, on 07/20/2009, -9/+94I don't care too much for NASCAR, but the final couple laps can sometimes be pretty exciting. Pulling maneuvers at 200 mph to win a race ain't no breeze.
- JeSTeRSeVeN, on 07/20/2009, -1/+83I'm not gonna lie, I'd probably watch that the first time they tried it.
- analreceiver, on 07/20/2009, -11/+78Reminds me of this:
http://www.theonion.com/content/video/nascar_coach ... - omgwtflawl, on 07/20/2009, -10/+76I'll preface by saying that I don't watch NASCAR and in general am not very interested in the sport. I do like racing, I'm just more of a Le Mans guy then a NASCAR guy.
That being said, this chart and the resulting commentary are idiotic. Far from being easy, driving in NASCAR or indeed any other racing event is monumentally difficult. Right when you start or whenever you turn out of the pit lane, you are on cold tires. Driving on cold tires going the speeds they are going is like driving a normal car on very slick ice.
Then there is tire/fuel strategy in general. Lets say you are in the lead, and you are a lap ahead of the 2nd place guy. There aren't many laps left, and your only job is to coast in to victory, right? Wrong. Your tires are failing, and if you are too hard on them they will fail and you will end up in the wall. So you have to drive fast enough that the person behind you does not overtake, but not so fast that you burst your tires. ***** up either way can have very serious consequences for your career.
Not to mention that breaking too late in only one of the 800ish corners will destroy your car and probably injure you seriously. You think you could do that? Get the breaking and cornering down for every single corner over a grueling 3 hour race and not ***** up once? Even if all of the corners are going left, that doesn't make the walls any softer when you crash into them. - crazzy88ss, on 07/20/2009, -2/+62Actually it originated so people could get drunk in private. It came from the prohibition days when alcohol was illegal...
- cptshamrock, on 07/20/2009, -6/+60Considering a spot on a F1 car probably costs at least 5x more than a NASCAR car your theory seems to be flawed.....
- bmcnally, on 07/20/2009, -0/+53From the moonshiners running whiskey on back roads.
They would race to see who had the best modded car for outrunning the cops. - AdamFromMyspace, on 07/20/2009, -7/+59BREAKING: It is super fun to be in a car going 165 mph and taking left turns, yet still painfully boring to watch.
- bliz20, on 07/20/2009, -6/+57Hi high.
- LuckyASN, on 07/20/2009, -0/+50They do have 3 road course tracks that have left and right hand turns; Montreal, Sonoma, and Watkins Glen. Those are decently entertaining and are pretty much the only ones I'll watch. Though not often.
- deadbaby, on 07/20/2009, -6/+51I don't care for NASCAR but let's be honest... all sports are pretty stupid when you simplify them. Baseball is a bunch of guys running around a diamond. Basketball is a bunch of guys running up and down a court. Hockey is a bunch of guys skating up and down a court. Obviously people are interested in these things for other reasons. I assume NASCAR fans would get bored with cars going in a circle if there wasn't more to it. I like F1 and it's basically cars going around a bunch of corners on a closed loop. The technology and strategy is interesting to me. I also appreciate how committed F1 drivers are. No matter what the sport you have to respect someone who does it with passion. NASCAR is probably the same for people who like it.
- veriix, on 07/20/2009, -3/+48...so it is a breeze then?
- rolfeman02, on 07/20/2009, -7/+50N A S C A R
Non-Athletic-Sport-Centered-Around-Rednecks - LordBacon, on 07/20/2009, -21/+64I'm high.
- inactive, on 07/20/2009, -15/+52Ah ignorance at its best.
- thefangedrabbit, on 07/20/2009, -15/+48I assume you're talking about NASCAR. In which case +1 diggs.
- wascheer, on 07/20/2009, -26/+58It's a funny chart, but based largely upon ignorance. The irony is palpable in that NASCAR fans are thought - by those ignorant of the sport - to be ignorant. To correct all of the fallacies parroted in this chart (and comments) would be a waste of time, as the digg crowd is far too comfortable with their predjudices.
- trashymac, on 07/20/2009, -3/+33I used to rag on NASCAR until I was surprised with a free trip inside on for my birthday in Vegas. I about crapped my pants when going 165mph around the corners, and we weren't even going full speed. I can't imagine doing that regularly with other racers a couple of inches away.
- nesagwa, on 07/20/2009, -14/+44Blithely mocking the death of a man that burned to death.
Stay classy cracked. - bradleyland, on 07/20/2009, -1/+31The first 480 laps are just to ***** with the drivers' heads to the point that they'll consider doing something stupid at 200 MPH.
- dagnabbit, on 07/20/2009, -4/+31Say what you will about the rest of the race...the last 20 laps are usually pretty exciting.
- Reebee52, on 07/20/2009, -13/+40It's like horse racing... For hillbillies.
- cptcliche, on 07/20/2009, -0/+23Ever been to college?
- channon65, on 07/20/2009, -12/+34Dugg for Nascar fans lives being worth mere pennies...
- BridgeBurner, on 07/20/2009, -6/+27It's interesting that a bunch of right-wingers spend the weekend turning left.
- brownsound00, on 07/20/2009, -4/+25the players aren't, but the fields are. and it's not like there is constant action anyways, they cut to ads every 5 mins
- TheVirus, on 07/20/2009, -3/+24I can't stand to watch baseball, but I certainly do enjoy playing it every now and again. You can't compare watching something to actively participating in it. NASCAR is ***** boring to watch, as is baseball, end of story.
- omgwtflawl, on 07/20/2009, -1/+20Erm, have you seen footballer's uniforms in Britain? That's something I've never seen in America before.
- MScrip, on 07/20/2009, -2/+20>> "watching it is never exciting."
And how many people who watch the Superbowl actually PLAY in the NFL? - dty2010, on 07/20/2009, -6/+24Good thing there aren't other cars out there going nearly 200 miles an hour, then they would really have to worry about safety.
- crazzy88ss, on 07/20/2009, -1/+18Have you been to a local race horse track lately? The crowd isn't very different...
- hawkeyeracer, on 07/20/2009, -1/+17You're an idiot. NASCAR does race on 2 road courses every year. Watkins Glen and Sonoma. Danica Patrick races in the IndyCar Series, which runs mostly ovals as well and is not even close the same thing as F1. 0 for 3 my friend.
- swiftekho, on 07/21/2009, -0/+16I respect the reactions and abilities some of these drivers have while driving. Also I don't know many people that can say they have adjusted the height of the car, fueled an 18 gallon tank and changed all 4 tires in under 15 seconds.
Personally I have been to a few NASCAR races and the tailgating. I see many people hating on the sport and their fans but at the same time the sport creates an environment that not many people see or experience. I've never met a single person that went to a NASCAR race that had a bad time. - inactive, on 07/20/2009, -1/+17woooooosh
- cly8419, on 07/20/2009, -0/+15I'd imagine driving 200 mph creates quite a breeze.
- nesagwa, on 07/20/2009, -2/+17Kentucky Derby.
Kentucky.
Nobody goes to that thing to watch a 30 second horse race either. - dsmx, on 07/21/2009, -1/+16Whereas cricket was invented so people could drink non stop for 5 days and not be called alcoholics.
- swiftekho, on 07/21/2009, -0/+14You say probably because you have no idea. Your comment is fogged up by stereotyping. Having been to a few races and the camp groups I can tell you it constantly smells like green grass and damn fine cooking. Seeing as most of the fans of NASCAR are from the south, I think we can all attest to how good southern cooking is compared to elsewhere. It's not gourmet by any means but grilling a 16 oz steak and mashing up some potatoes is delicious. Far cry from the beer and deep fried turkey aroma you say is "probably" there. It's funny how those ignorant to NASCAR believe everyone that's a fan is ignorant.
- makkaveli19, on 07/20/2009, -3/+15omfwtflawl
how can you defend nascar by saying that it's difficult blah blah blah and then put down F1. F1 driving is many times harder than nascar.
almost all the things you brought up about nascar apply to f1 racing and then some. - Reebee52, on 07/20/2009, -3/+15The people are different, the idea is the same.
Horse Races=polo shirts+pastel pants+beer
NASCAR=Muscle Shirts+Mullets+Beer - TigerStar337, on 07/20/2009, -1/+12"probably"??
- thehuntofdear, on 07/21/2009, -1/+12Yeah you moron! How do you not know that!
- UnterDenLinden, on 07/21/2009, -0/+10Sounds pretty good to me...
- Nyaos, on 07/20/2009, -12/+22What can be ignorant about assuming that Nascar is left turns for 200 laps? It's true.
- Gizza, on 07/21/2009, -0/+9Sounds like basketball where the first 3 quarters are pointless.
- Nutsle, on 07/20/2009, -0/+9Not exactly, they were the first sanctioning body to use it, but it was developed in the late 80s and went on the market in the early 90s. F1 showed interest in using it after Mika Hakkinen's accident in Adelaide in 1995.
