- crashbang, on 12/20/2008, -0/+36Its funny how bigger is always thought of as better. Small and nimble can work like a champ too.
- TheEngineer2008, on 12/20/2008, -0/+25"Lotus says the Exige S 240 is the quickest car it has ever made ever, with a zero-to-60 time of 4.1 seconds. (The S 240’s “quickest Lotus” honors will probably cede next month to the Exige S 260, which has 17 more horsepower and, through generous use of carbon fiber, is 50 pounds lighter.)"
Sweet! - zyklon, on 12/20/2008, -1/+21Lotus makes, and has always made, some of the finest and most beautiful cars I've ever seen. The Exige is no exception. I love it.
- dsmx, on 12/20/2008, -0/+17Considering what a lotus exige will beat around a track it's astonishing what it acheives with a 1.8l engine. http://www.bbc.co.uk/topgear/show/powerlaps.shtml
- Virgule, on 12/20/2008, -0/+15Minimum input, maximum output.
- BelatedHero, on 12/20/2008, -3/+17The Elise/Exige is amazing. But I wish they would bring back the Esprit.
- inactive, on 12/20/2008, -1/+10That's what she said.
- jetpig, on 12/20/2008, -1/+9there's 2000 lbs in a ton. so it's 77 lbs over, FYI travis712
- zeeohsix, on 12/20/2008, -0/+8but you'd get something like the Lotus Seven
- iloveobama, on 12/20/2008, -0/+8jealous?
- Jeepinator, on 12/20/2008, -0/+7It's expensive considering the lack of features in the car, but if you are worried about features a Lotus is not your kind of car. It is $45,000 of pure performance and handling.
- WileyK, on 12/20/2008, -0/+6Lotus and Ariel should collaborate and make some sort of open-air speed demon the likes of which have never been seen
- mike23w, on 12/21/2008, -0/+5MIMO (tm)
- thomleidner, on 12/21/2008, -0/+5You got a lot of balls admitting you drive a Fiero...did it come with a mullet or did you have to grow one for the lucky guy to sell it to you?
- cowboy86, on 12/20/2008, -2/+6Right after she said "is in it yet" to make you feel better about yourself.
- PRind, on 12/21/2008, -0/+4Huh? Lotus has always made super-small toy-looking cars. The Esprit was the odd man out in that regard.
- nublet, on 12/20/2008, -2/+6light weight + decent power = one quick pocket rocket!
- Halsfield, on 12/20/2008, -0/+4wow that was an incredibly obscure reference for an insult.
(didnt digg you down though because i laughed) - Jeepinator, on 12/20/2008, -1/+5When he says it's better on the track than on the street he is right. He means that the comfort of the ride on the street is terrible. It is a track car; a weekend racer. This is not meant for quick runs to the supermarket, especially when you consider the amount of extra space in the car, which is nil. You do not want to drive this around town all the time. You will be seeing your chiropractor weekly if you do.
Why are you comparing this car to a Bugatti Veyron? - Samohtneas, on 12/21/2008, -0/+3Wow. I think that might be the only Smart I wouldn't feel silly driving in.
- ccxftw, on 12/21/2008, -0/+3I love the Lotus Elise/Exige, but personally I think I would go for a Caterham 7 CSR260. 260bhp Cosworth I4, 575kg, 0-60 in 3.1 seconds.
- dafragsta, on 12/20/2008, -1/+4The Exige has always been my favorite non-supercar in the Forza series.
- untreadatom, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3In the back of your mothers station wagon. GROW A ***** PAIR ALREADY!!!
- Annix, on 12/21/2008, -0/+3Unfortunately, Chapman's mantra of "remove weight and simplify" has never taken into account reliability... Hence the old joke of Lotus being an acronym: Lots Of Trouble; Usually Serious.
Never put me off wanting one though! - farfromhere, on 12/20/2008, -0/+3Why can't you love both?
- PRind, on 12/21/2008, -0/+3I think you boys need to google the new model, the Lotus 2-11.
- zeeohsix, on 12/20/2008, -0/+3with the high hp/weight ratio, it is like a go-kart and can hang with the big dogs.
that being said, it's better on the track rather than the street. getting and out is a pain in the butt.
when Lotus was owned by GM the Vauxhall VX220 was said to be better built than the Elise. - Twenty, on 12/21/2008, -0/+3Lotus Elise has always been my dream car. In orange.
- se7envii, on 12/20/2008, -0/+3Such a beautiful car.
- lothar250, on 12/20/2008, -0/+3I bet it's fun. Looks like a toy car.
- Halsfield, on 12/20/2008, -1/+3i really dont understand why people care that it doesnt go as fast in the street. I need to go speeds anywhere from 0-85 quickly and efficiently, anything above that in a city street setting is just unnecessary. I just want a beautiful (like this car), efficient, decently fast car that isnt incredibly expensive and lasts a decent amount of years without expensive repairs. I do not need a car that goes 240mph in 5 seconds to go to and from places in the city, you will never use that if you are driving in cities.
If you owned a bugatti veyron would you really max it out on any road without killing A) yourself B) any passengers C) other people D) completely totaling your incredibly expensive car. The only place it would get to be used in that way would be the race track. - Samohtneas, on 12/21/2008, -0/+2Probably because the Elise/Exige is pretty cheap compared to most sports cars but performs at their level, if not above some of them. It's also a lot more realistic in terms of performance than the Bugatti.
- farfromhere, on 12/20/2008, -0/+2Whoomp.... There it is?
- crazzy88ss, on 12/21/2008, -1/+3lol...
- rnelsonee, on 12/20/2008, -0/+2You can get a 2005 Elise for $45,000. Not cheap, but not exactly super expensive. Even new, they cost less than an equipped BMW 3-series.
- socialrebel, on 12/21/2008, -0/+2I used to own a Celica GT-S that uses the same type of engine in the Exige, minus the supercharger.
I can imagine it would indeed be a pleasure to drive. The celica was! - firesights, on 12/21/2008, -0/+2I'm just guessing here, but I would assume that there would be some sort of legal difficulty with a car not having rear visibility. Imagine if the camera malfunctioned while you were zooming down the autobahn? You suddenly are extremely limited in your ability to see anything behind you. While it's true that the rear visibility isn't good, or even average, at least it's something. Being able to barely see the bumper of what's behind you is a vast improvement over complete blindness.
But yes, a camera or two would do wonders for this car, I think. Of course, if you buy an Elise with luxury-class drivability in mind, you're crazy. - macmcraeart, on 12/20/2008, -2/+4you must be clairvoyant. peter venkman is about to shock your dumbass. :-)
- Jeepinator, on 12/21/2008, -0/+2Hals: There is no NEED for the Bugatti Veyron OR the Elise/Exige. They are for fun, especially the Veyron. They are for rich people who want to show it. The Elise/Exige can legitimately be used for competitive weekend racing as well.
If you knew anything about performance cars then you would know why I think comparing a Veyron to an Elise is stupid. - inotocracy, on 12/21/2008, -0/+2Screw the fire jokes, its a Pontiac.
- inactive, on 12/21/2008, -0/+2If you can afford 65,000 just for entertaining drives it's good, but where do I put my shopping?
- untreadatom, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2They are cheap. They are stupid fast. Highly modifiable!! Everyone should have one!
Ditch that pussy supercharger and throw on a real turbo and beef up the tranny and you are ready to be outrunning everything. Ever. - troye, on 12/21/2008, -0/+2I like the "Coffee Thong!"
- trejrco, on 12/22/2008, -0/+2Too much smart in the name, not so much in the boardroom ...
- mdaize, on 12/21/2008, -1/+3too bad its fugly... especially in comparison!
- MisteR2, on 12/21/2008, -0/+2Damn straight they need to bring back cheap MR vehicles. It's not like the drivetrain has to be any different from the oh-so-popular FF setup.
/AW11 FTW. - Equinox1, on 12/22/2008, -0/+2I've always loved the look of these cars and they're not that expensive either.
- Halsfield, on 12/21/2008, -1/+2you don't seem to be reading the same comment i wrote.
my comment was about my lack of understanding of why people are so concerned with the performance of high-end sports cars on the street vs the race track. the bugatti veyron is a such a car, lotus makes high-end sports cars as well. why would i compare a fast car to a fast car? is that a serious question?
i just do not see the reason for needing a car that does 240mph when the only time you are going to be doing those speeds is on a race track (if you try on the street you are going to either kill yourself or someone else). If all you want is to experience those speeds, rent a car and track time or better yet rent a plane and lower the chance of killing other people.
So one more time, race track speeds are fine, but when you talk about a car not being as good because its street performance is not as good i find it baffling as to why that is important. if you want to inform me of why that is different im all ears. - WileyK, on 12/20/2008, -0/+1Exactly. Some sort of next-gen 7, maybe an Atom-like design with actual bodywork.
As much as I love the Atom, it could possibly use a bit of Carbon Fiber bodywork and a more powerful engine -
