It never ceases to amaze me how ignorant so many people on digg are
also Toyota and Honda are car brands not hybrid vehicles - meridianknight, on 02/14/2009, -0/+13First Drive: 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid. Better than Prius? (I think this is the link jaysizzle meant to show).
http://editorial.autos.msn.com/article.aspx?cp-doc ... - jayzizzle, on 02/14/2009, -1/+11First Drive: 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid. Better than Prius?
- mcalica, on 02/15/2009, -1/+10I can guarantee you that this car will average more than 50 mpg. My girlfriend has been AVERAGING 42 mpg with her 2009 Honda Fit for the past two weeks...In Hawaii; for those of you not familiar with roads in Hawaii, our highways are short and usually filled with traffic, so this is probably closer to 42 mpg CITY. The insight is built for high fuel economy, so I do not doubt that it will eclipse the Fit's numbers.
- TheEngineer2008, on 02/14/2009, -1/+9I guess the Prius is seen as the one to beat.
- jbella, on 02/15/2009, -0/+6So your argument against driving a small car is that it is somehow threatening to your manhood?
Sounds like someone has some insecurity issues. - mr100percent, on 02/14/2009, -12/+19Toyota and Honda sound like good hybrids. Where are the hybrids in detroit?
- jbella, on 02/15/2009, -0/+7This is a myth that has been debunked over and over again.
- iEnigma, on 02/15/2009, -1/+7I miss the old Insight. There's nothing else like it. It looks like a space pod driving down the road.
- jbella, on 02/15/2009, -1/+7Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
And besides.. they have tried this. Honda made a hybrid civic and accord that looked exactly like their non-hybrid versions.. and people were not interested in them. Turns out.. if you are going to pay extra for a hybrid, people seem to prefer a more distinctive look that screams "Hey..this is a hybrid." - rhustang, on 02/15/2009, -0/+6it's the back end that makes it look the same and both cars are shaped that way to get a low drag coefficient. honda's known for some pretty nice designs, so i don't think they would have copied toyota unless there were engineering reasons behind it.
- Konrad9, on 02/15/2009, -2/+7You forgot the Cadillac Escalade.
Yes, it only gets 19mpg city, but that's up from 12mpg city. 50% increase is incredible in a large SUV hybrid. - tjex, on 02/15/2009, -0/+4This was actually proven to be false.
First hit from google: http://blogs.thecarconnection.com/marty-blog/10149 ... - hbyrne, on 02/14/2009, -5/+9Nice to see Honda giving Toyota a serious competitive run in the hybrid game, which can only benefit the industry and consumers. Whether Detroit has gotten the economy and efficiency religion yet is unclear, as to date they seem to have only gotten our bailout money.
- MacEnvy, on 02/15/2009, -2/+6I love my Ford Escape Hybrid. 30 mpg for a 4WD SUV isn't too shabby, either.
- Konrad9, on 02/15/2009, -0/+430MPG is pretty good for a 4WD anything.
- MacEnvy, on 02/15/2009, -1/+5I bet you'll go far in life with that attitude.
- Mothrog, on 02/15/2009, -1/+5So, just how small is your dick?
- MacEnvy, on 02/15/2009, -1/+4Common misconception. The Escape Hybrid uses a very similar setup to the Toyota "Hybrid Synergy Drive", but it is not the same and they don't share any parts. Basically, Ford was assisted by the Toyota team when designing the system but it's definitely not identical.
- lax767, on 02/15/2009, -0/+3just saw this in Sapporo Japan. It looks nice and they did have a price on the car, 1,900,000 yen, which is about $21,000. They had one running model and then one with the full tricked out interior. 30 K/L = 70.6 MPG!!!!
- KISSOLOGY, on 02/16/2009, -0/+3Interesting color.
- Katana, on 02/15/2009, -0/+3It's what happens when you mix aerodynamics and practicality.
The back end's look similiar because the use a kammback deisgn to reduce wake turbulence, most of the other style stuff is to reduce drag coeffiecent as well. If you strive for a low drag then you are kind of limited in your designs.
The old insight is still one of the most aerodynamic production cars made, more than the prius, even had better mpg as well. - Bone1205, on 02/15/2009, -0/+209 civic hybrid looks just like every other civic but has different wheels.
- publiclurker, on 02/15/2009, -0/+1He probably needs the V8 to make up for his little 4 banger.
- lulzitsadigg, on 02/16/2009, -0/+1The Fit looks ok, been thinking about saving up for one of them. How are they in terms of quality?
- Lunarbunny, on 02/16/2009, -0/+1I know what the ***** a hatchback is. I'm talking the weirdo hard-angle window, and it was supposed to be slightly humorous. I guess I failed at that, and the nincompoops are digging you up for stating the obvious.
- wohho, on 02/16/2009, -0/+1Indeed, this is a complete misconception, there are no common parts, no shared patents, no commonly sourced systems.
- JackpotCity, on 02/17/2009, -0/+1"Honda ’s goal was to create a hybrid car that was not just practical, but would be priced within reach of eco-conscious buyers on a budget"
Good, solid thinking, but if the car sucks in the design department, you're up ***** creek without a paddle. - inactive, on 02/16/2009, -0/+1I have a leaf blower with more.
- AARGH2K, on 02/16/2009, -0/+1They made a hybrid Accord and nobody bought it, so for those whining about how it looks, blame the consumer, who dictates what gets made and how it looks.
- inactive, on 02/17/2009, -0/+1Oil companies mad them an offer they couldn't refuse.
now the oil companies should bail them out. - Tegurit34, on 02/15/2009, -1/+2This article barely addresses the pollution output of the transportation of parts. All it went into was "he said this, the other guy says that." But cargo ships inarguably put out tons and tons of pollution, and they have to sail all the way around the world. They go from North America across the Atlantic to Europe, from Europe to south Atlantic, the Indian Ocean and east Pacific to China, China to Japan, and Japan across the Pacific to the North American west coast.
Now, how many resources that takes up combined with the resources saved in gas mileage is practically unquantifiable unless you have the time an connections to do the research, but there's one more thing that hasn't been addressed: Hybrid car drivers drive more often than giant SUV drivers of Hummers and Land Rovers. This needs to be quantified as well.
But here's are the no-doubters:
- If you really want an environmentally-friendly car, you'd buy an American hybrid. (And I say this as a really, really big Japanese car enthusiast.)
- The Prius is a status symbol nowadays more than anything else. http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.com/2008/02/07/60-toyo ...
I'm all for saving the environment, but seriously people, don't do it to be chic and say that you're saving the world. Environmentalism isn't fashion, and when you're using it as fashion you're creating a new sterotype of people who really do make it their life's work to make the world a better place to live in for our children. Prius enthusiasts aren't fooling me one bit. - 30thElement, on 02/15/2009, -0/+1Don't feed the trolls.
- LordBalderdash, on 02/15/2009, -0/+1depends how much you drive, but let's say you go with the insight at around $20k (base price) vs a yaris (full package around $15k). insight gets a bit less than 50% better mileage (52 or so mpg vs around 36 for the yaris). if you drive 10k miles a year on average at $1.50/gal for gas you're spending $288.46 in gas for the insight and $416.67 for the yaris saving you about $128/yr. to make up the price difference between the two cars you'd have to drive the insight for about 39 years.
- malfunktion, on 02/15/2009, -4/+4Why are all hybrids ugly?
- inactive, on 02/15/2009, -2/+2Honda should have used the Clarity body for this hybrid... much cooler looking IMHO.
- katorga, on 02/16/2009, -0/+0Woop. My 2008 Honda Fit (sport manual) averages 41mpg (with my particular commute, lower if city driving), all for $14,500. Ironically the new Fit sport costs $19500! When I was looking, that massive $10K difference between the Fit and Prius, sunk the Toyota. It sinks the Insight too, unless I wanted to spend that much in the first place. It would never save enough gas to overcome the cost.
For saving the planet? It doesn't matter. Producing cars does more damage that driving the car: it does not matter if you get a Hummer or a Prius. - Nerys, on 02/17/2009, -1/+1My 88 Cherokee with 485,000 miles on the clock with a 200 horsepower inline 6 and 31inch mudders full skids rs9000 all around and a 4 inch suspension life gets 24mpg on the highway. 25 if I REALLY work it and have no hills or wind.
so NO 30mpg for a MASSIVE PREMIUM is not worth it especially when I KNOW chrysler makes and ships 36mpg Diesel Cherokee's overseas but will not sell them or can not sell them here.
Most of those Detroit Hybrids you list get A TINY LITTLE BIT higher MPG than there NON hybrid counter parts.
It never ceases to amaze me when people post crap like that without even REALIZING what it is they are posting IE garbage.
Even the prius SUCKS.
46mpg? a TYPICAL diesel sedan in europe can get 50+mpg JUST DIESEL no hybrid system.
Got anymore tidbits for us ignorant folk.? - itsthemechanic, on 02/17/2009, -0/+1You are missing the point, which is gas mileage, not drag-racing.
Besides, where in America do you need more than 98hp with your ridiculously low speed limits?
Greetings from Germany. - T8erT0T, on 02/15/2009, -2/+2"Honda says the Insight will go 40 miles on a gallon in city driving and 43 on the highway. Those numbers don’t seem particularly hybridlike."
An emphatic "meh" is needed. - Konrad9, on 02/15/2009, -1/+1BAD POSTING SYSTEM! BAD!
- mrbios, on 06/09/2009, -0/+0Fairings make a huge difference: Craig vetter achieved up top 470mpg on a motorcycle in the 80's.
http://www.craigvetter.com/pages/470MPG/470MPG%20M ... - inactive, on 02/15/2009, -0/+0most magazine testers are getting into high 50's
- PrincePickle, on 02/15/2009, -2/+1I'm not sure where the value is. How long does it take before the fuel savings justify a $20,000 price tag? Not all of us can afford a $20,000 car.....
- Leezus, on 02/15/2009, -5/+4The biggest improvement for Honda will be when they manage to make a hybrid that doesn't look like ass.
