- Rhounin, on 04/16/2009, -0/+20I have driven Golfs all my life. In my opinion they are some of the most reliable cars in the world. I am currently on my fourth Golf and every car I put on 500,000 klicks, and have been getting on average 750 kilometres per tank of gas. However I do say repair jobs are a little higher then most, but I always felt it was worth it.
VW's have treated me well. - pissshivers, on 04/16/2009, -1/+18Golf is good, but the Scirocco is essentially a Golf with a sexier body, I'd have that instead.
- Rivers37, on 04/16/2009, -0/+14Didn't this happen last week?
- razorsharpwit, on 04/16/2009, -2/+12da da da
- carlosos, on 04/16/2009, -0/+8While VW had bad quality in some of their cars a few years ago, it never affected the Golf. The Golf was always known as the best build VW.
- inotocracy, on 04/16/2009, -0/+7From what I gather, VW had very poor reliability in the older models (Jettas were the more notorious ones). Constantly breaking down and just generally crappy. I'm sure this has been fixed since, but they got a bad reputation for it. Go look up user reviews for the semi-older models and you'll see.
- phyx726, on 04/16/2009, -0/+7Love my GTI MKIV but damn is it expensive to fix. It's amazing how much crap you can fit inside of the hatchback with the seats down. It's like a mini-truck.
- ronnyek, on 04/16/2009, -0/+7god I love idiots like this... people that bust their nuts over hybrids that havent been proven... and have actually proven to be worse in the long run than gasoline vehicles (components used in making electrical systems and batteries).
I'm all for new, cleaner technology, just very against every tom dick and hairy thinking they are high and mighty for driving a prius.
Clean small diesels atm are my pick for good for the pocketbook and environment - drlha, on 04/16/2009, -0/+6Last time I checked, Ford, who made the finalist Fiesta, are an American company. OK, so you can't actually buy a Fiesta in America, but still!
- joshgoodacre, on 04/16/2009, -0/+5Mine is 7 years old and not failed me in err.. 7 years.
- killahwhale, on 04/16/2009, -0/+5Just wait until the MKVI GTI.
Now that is what I will be purchasing in about 2 years. Such a sexy looking vehicle. And you can't go wrong with the 2.0T FSI engine. - SingleMaltWSKY, on 04/16/2009, -0/+5No kidding - I had a Golf MkIV with a 1.8 - it ran like clockwork.
- osteor10, on 04/16/2009, -0/+5ford makes some impressive cars just none of them are in the US.
- chr00t, on 04/16/2009, -0/+5Thats funny, all of mine work fine...
- Gr00ver, on 04/16/2009, -0/+4Different people have different luck with their cars.
I had a 2002.5 VW GTI VR6 and my wife has a 2002 VW Jetta 1.8T. I had numerous problems with my car, the transmission had to be replaced (under warranty) along with the gearbox and flywheel with less than 15k miles on it. My water pump went out 2 years later. Tons of electrical problems too..
My wife's Jetta has had it's fair share of problems too.. sensors going out at random, the car killing batteries at will, hoses melting away in the first 2 years of it's life.
I know a lot of people who own VW's who have had no problems with them, and LOVE their cars.. me on the other hand, will probably never buy a VW again. - TheSpook, on 04/16/2009, -0/+4Yeah, VW's are expensive to repair. I did get 3 years of free maintenance included on my 2009 Jetta TDI, so those savings will help offset the cost of any repairs I need to do. I'll pay for it one way or another (including in the initial purchase price, which wasn't cheap), but driving the car is like making sweet love, so I'll deal with it.
- Aleman360, on 04/16/2009, -2/+6I've been looking into getting a used Golf/Rabbit--they seem more practical than a regular econobox and I really like how they look--but from what I've read, VW's are relatively unreliable and expensive to fix. And they get crappy gas mileage for their size. Shame.
- marksism, on 04/16/2009, -3/+7The Mac of cars
- maddskillz, on 04/16/2009, -0/+4Please explain?
I don't know anything about the Toyota, but the new Fiesta looks pretty good. - ronnyek, on 04/16/2009, -0/+4I dont think they get terrible gas mileage... unreliable, maybe. All I have to say is go drive a german car.... any german car and give honest impressions. They dont have to have best mileage or the most power, theres just something about them. As far as rating new cars, who knows about reliability... vw hasnt got the best track record tho
- Mankind121, on 04/16/2009, -0/+4Actually, VW has a goal to design and produce a car that does achieve 100mpg, without the batteries. And you need to remove your head from your ass for thinking that anything that doesn't fit your profile for the way things should be is automatic *****.
- mickstephenson, on 04/16/2009, -1/+5Coz your knowledge of and taste in cars is crap?
- pe5t1lence, on 04/16/2009, -0/+4vwvortex.com
Go to the forums, you can get DIY help with anything. And don't take them to the dealer, they will ream you.
Don't get from '98-2003, bad plastic. But if you get a good deal it might make sense, just would have to replace the wiring, hoses, ect eventually. Hopefully the new generation is better. - askjeffro, on 04/16/2009, -0/+4You'll be able to buy a Fiesta shortly.
In fact,t he European Focus is making a comeback to American shores as well. - jeremec, on 04/16/2009, -0/+4What is the ratio of Scirocco's on jack stands to Scirocco's on the road? I love the body, but they seem to be in a constant state of repair. I'll keep my GTI VR6 MkIV. Kudos to VW though.
- chanop, on 04/16/2009, -0/+3I have a MKV Rabbit. Golf/Rabbits haven't had the problems that Jettas had. I get about 32MPG HW (after a couple mods). They're not the fastest cars out there, but they have a lot of torque.
- bluechigger, on 04/16/2009, -0/+3Thank God they aren't going to call this the Rabbit when it comes to the States. So glad the Golf badge is back. I just cannot purchase a car with a picture of a rabbit on the hatch.
- toddc612, on 04/16/2009, -0/+3Oohhh, you awed me with specifications and calling me illiterate!
It's faster! That must mean it's better! You're right.
Same old design with a fin on the back.. wow. I'm impressed. Don't you need to be at an intersection somewhere trying to pick a race with someone? - chanop, on 04/16/2009, -0/+3I won't bury you if you explain...How are they least reliable car in the world?
- ShiftyBizniss, on 04/16/2009, -0/+3Corrado FTW

- Aleman360, on 04/16/2009, -1/+4I've driven my dad's A6 (4.0 V8, 4WD) a lot and while it's nice I wouldn't say it's all that different of an experience from driving, say, an Acura TL or something like that.
- askjeffro, on 04/16/2009, -0/+3This new Golf must be pretty hot stuff in person. I got the chance to check out the new Fiesta and came away very impressed. For the Golf to take top honors it must be quite the car.
I only hope for the Golf is that they have improved the ergonomics for the driver, my right knee would always rub against the side due to lack of room in previous gen cars.Always thought the Golf would be "perfect" (for me) if they fixed that. - mickstephenson, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2Agreed, but it somehow doesn't have the charm of the old Scirocco.
http://www.paodeforma.com/vwt2/familia/images/0%20 ... I dunno what it is about it, but I'm just a fan, one of the all time most lust-able classics in my book, easily surpassed by the Citroen DS though. - ThatGeek, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2http://blogs.cars.com/kickingtires/2008/10/stuff-1 ...
This is a bit old, (from 08 model year) but FTA
European automakers also increased reliability. Mercedes-Benz has improved, though a third of its cars remain below average. Volkswagen remains at the bottom, but it’s improving. Volvo has continued to improve, with eight out of nine Volvo models now ranking average or above average. That makes it one of the most reliable European makes.
So I guess they arent as bad as I thought and of course some models are better than others and of course there are just some bum cars - blogginginc, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2This is old and has already been dugg, BURIED !.
http://digg.com/d1oMRD - pe5t1lence, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2The early 2000 models had electrical problems and hose problems in the engine (the plastics weren't as temperature resistant or generally rugged as they should have been). As of now I have had to replace all of the ignition wiring, the PCV hoses, the oil dipstick tube, and I currently have an airbag light caused by a bad wire connector.
That being said it still is a good car, but these little thing should never have happened and could have easily been prevented if VW had used better plastic. - richecker, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2Best vw commerical ever
- chanop, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2^also rabbitownersclub.com is helpful
- mickstephenson, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2No I haven't driven one, next you'll be telling be the Lancia Delta was ***** too... you bastard.
- jonesyno, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2What you will and what you won't. Uh-huh.
- twitrock, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2someone has to innovate.
- raptor87, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2the last gen GTI didn't have a rabbit on the back
- raptor87, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2they also brought you the first manufactured turbine jetplane
- easybakechicken, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2I wouldn't trade my 09 GTI for the world
- dsmx, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2VW's don't go wrong.
- hozer, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2you are kidding right! have you drive an old scirocco, they rattled, and all they knew how to do was scream the thing was like at 4k rpm at like 80, definitly woldn't pick one over the same year GTI, a similar year CRX SI screamed as well but somehow was way more enjoyable! I love VW but I don't think the old scirocco is worthy of the nostalgia some people appear to be giving it.
- mlc1138, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2Ha.. I'm actually what you might consider a Mac fanboy. The difference between VWs and Macs are that Macs rarely, if ever need repairs. I've had my current tower since 2003 with zero calls to a troubleshooting line.
- braavosi, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2I love my GTI vr6 but god damn its expensive to get worked on.
- aceuk, on 04/16/2009, -0/+2The new MkVI Golf GTD looks pretty cool too. 170hp and 53.2 (UK) mpg!
