- 2of8, on 06/30/2009, -0/+29Hyundai is relying on people not doing this calculation themselves.
- walt100, on 06/30/2009, -1/+26After years of bad cars, we bought a Hyundai two years ago. We were so happy with it, we just bought a second Hyundai last weekend. It's the Internet. Google any car, and you'll find someone convinced it sucks. But we're very happy with ours. The standard warranty is pretty nice.

But then again its main vehicle is a wanna be Mercedes. - zip22, on 06/30/2009, -0/+14actually, they did. the deal didn't turn out so great for buyers, though
http://www.usatoday.com/money/autos/2008-05-05-chr ... - RolltheStampede, on 06/30/2009, -1/+15Only for a year? Average miles driven in a year i believe is 12,000. if you assume 25 MPG with an savings of say 2 per gallon. That is $960. which is not really all that much. And you aren't ever guaranteed that. It take a quick 2,000 off.
- wolfing, on 06/30/2009, -0/+9guess you haven't read the latest reports on quality that put Hyundai ON TOP of the other companies like Toyota
- chickenloco, on 06/30/2009, -3/+11Hyundai is the one company that is doing it all right.
- Mothrog, on 06/30/2009, -0/+8"Hyundai says buyers who opt for the gas discount have to subtract $1,000 from any rebate offered on its individual models."
So, basically, this promotion is for people that suck at math. At 12,000 miles, at 25 mpg, that's 480 gallons of gas. Even if gas was $4.00 the entire year, that's $1200 of savings, if you're lucky, that you knocked $1,000 of guaranteed rebate to get. - acid_jazz, on 06/30/2009, -0/+8Ha. Nice try. That may have been true many years ago, but they've stepped up their game in recent years:
http://sev.prnewswire.com/auto/20090622/LA36073220 ... - BeatPunchbeef, on 06/30/2009, -0/+7Old Hyundais were pure junk, only after 2004-ish did they raise the bar considerably. The new ones are actually good cars, FAR better then Jeeps and the like. Im not sure about crash testing as someone had mentioned earlier, but why should I google an answer they should have found themselves.
Plus a 10 year 100k mile warranty is pretty solid too. - inactive, on 06/30/2009, -3/+10The only thing in the genesis that isn't on par with at least lexus is the seating surface. I would have bought one, but the D-Bag GSM told me that he wouldn't give me a dime over 9 grand for my trade and I told him to pack it in his ass.
- generaleet, on 06/30/2009, -0/+6Well, you can't do this if the program hasn't started yet. Nice try though.
- Vodd9, on 06/30/2009, -0/+6Scion = Toyota = Lexus
Acura = Honda - mathyou87, on 06/30/2009, -0/+6...that Hyundai took from Chrystler's nearly identical campaign last summer.
Edit: I like Hyundai... I'm just pointing out what people have forgotten. - darkened, on 06/30/2009, -1/+7If wannabe Mercedes means it's reliable unlike the highly unreliable Mercedes car lines I can accept your statement.
- RegalBegal, on 06/30/2009, -0/+5It's fun posting random 'facts' online.
- anexanhume, on 06/30/2009, -0/+5It really is, people are so hung up on the price of gas that they'd gladly take this when certain cashback incentives could actually save them more.
For instance, let's say someone drives 12k miles in a year and gets 22 mpg average with their hyundai. That's 545 gallons in a year. Now, let's say that they would have been paying 3.50 on average otherwise (which is high, it's only 3.00 in LA right now). With that huge disparity, that's still only $1100. Incentives can often be above 1000 for new car buyers. It's all about the psychology of it.
The fine print states that 12k is the max miles allowed (they actually figure it by dividing 12k by the EPA estimated MPG for the car, so if you're below that line-lots of city driving- you're screwed too), and the buyer has to SUBTRACT $1000 from any cashback offer they get to be able to use the program. So, in very few situations will this actually save the consumer more. They have to bank heavily on high gas prices and better than estimated MPG for their car (yet they must also drive a lot to ensure they maximize the benefit). - chickenloco, on 06/30/2009, -0/+5Source? ALL companies look at their competitors products - it helps them make their products better.
The reason why Hyundai's are so cheap is due to the weak won.
Get your facts STRAIGHT before you make assumptions. - MacEnvy, on 06/30/2009, -0/+5I thought you were interested in science and programming ...
- CivicTV, on 08/14/2009, -0/+5$2.99 a gallon for 3 years!? Wow! Where do I sign!?
- etx313, on 06/30/2009, -0/+4Thats when gas was up at $4.00
American companies did this first. - cyrusuncc, on 06/30/2009, -1/+5"Consumers are eligible for a maximum number of gallons, equal to 12,000 miles divided by the EPA combined fuel economy rating for the qualifying model."
"Hyundai says buyers who opt for the gas discount have to subtract $1,000 from any rebate offered on its individual models."
Basically it's gambling that gas prices will go over $4 a gallon... - Floodle, on 06/30/2009, -0/+4I would just drive round and round to save as much money as possible
/s (hopefully not required) - inactive, on 06/30/2009, -0/+4Holy *****, KIA?! I'm honestly shocked. They must have turned things around
When Kia first came to the states I needed a cheap car and had 3 transmission failures within 1 year (warranty covered thank god) - and that was back before I came to my senses and started driving stick. - roberekson, on 06/30/2009, -0/+4No R&D? Read up on the "world engine" sometime, which is used by Hyundai/Mitsubishi/Chrysler sometime. Hyundai did all of the design work for the block. But then again, I guess Mitsubishi putting a Hyundai-designed engine in the Evolution doesn't mean anything, right?
- BeatPunchbeef, on 06/30/2009, -0/+4Always sell your car privately before going to the dealership. I used to work at a dealership in San Diego and my GSMs were pure slime. I was a super honest and lax salesman and had customers very comfortable with the car they wanted to purchase and BAM, my GSMs would kill the deal with no remorse.
And yah, I learned that super lax and honest in a dealership means my job only lasted a grueling 7 months before I packed it in. I leave that job to the buzzards. - ennuisquared, on 06/30/2009, -0/+4Reverse engineering is still engineering. You should take up PLC programming.
- augustojr, on 06/30/2009, -5/+9Too bad the American Autos won't/can't do this.
- klowngoblin, on 06/30/2009, -0/+4Wanna be mercedes?
Genesis vs E class
Genesis Handles better, brakes better, has WAY more standard features, has 5/5 for all crash tests and its cheaper by what? $15K? 375HP V8 RWD
whos a wannabe now? 1 vehicle blows goats for the money on paper, 1 kicks ass - dudeman88, on 06/30/2009, -0/+4*****.
Just bought a Sonata two months ago. Why didn't I wait? - Brassbud, on 06/30/2009, -0/+4In other news, Hyundai will charge more for their vehicles.
- kkiran, on 06/30/2009, -1/+4Read the fine print people! A cleverly sealed marketing gimmick! Without the $1.49 per gallon price it wouldn't have hit the front page and they won! But go with rebates and deals if you may. Electing this option disables the $1500 rebate! Act wisely, save $$$ and live better!
- zeth006, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3What a pointless comment.
- imacmike, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3ZOMG! Hyundais have 4 wheels, breaks, and windows. How dare they copy Ford. Ford had 4 wheels, breaks and windows before everyone else! Hyundai should innovate and do it with 7 wheels and no breaks.
- darkened, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3In what, price? Value?
- MachThree, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3Dodge did something like this a year or two ago, guaranteeing $3.00 a gallon gasoline. Imagine if you had chosen that instead of a rebate.
- scragg0x, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/0ecc000105/hyunda ...
- Nothlit, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3Good thing Hyundai has improved its reliability considerably in the last few years.
- Mightbiteyou, on 06/30/2009, -1/+4you just dropped a "RTFA" on someone who copy and pasted from the article
- djamp42, on 06/30/2009, -2/+5I bought a Elantra in 2003, I'm just about at 100,000 miles. No problems at all.
Hyundai WAS a bad car company in the 90s, but its now almost 2010!! They have improved so much in the last decade, i would say they are number 1 now. - CoD4, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3Trade ins are the best way to get ***** in the ass.
Though i understand many people do it because they can't afford to not have a car in between the selling and buying - acid_jazz, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3Right here: http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/review-2010-hyund ...
- SDM187, on 06/30/2009, -1/+4i completely agree with what theyre saying about this on cnbc... if saving a few hundred dollars on gas (total, its a 1yr offer) is your overwhelming incentive to buy a new car, then maybe you shouldnt be in the market for a new car
- 123bucklemyshoe, on 06/30/2009, -1/+4Yeah but if you think about it for example Hyundai could basically make the cars more expensive and then even though the gas is $1.49 or whatever the number is I can't remember specifically it will even out you know what I mean? Maybe it's just me. Interesting story though.
- stuffradio, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3I'll buy it for $1!
- ShadowFusion, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2especially with all the rebates the 09 models have on them.. just got a 09 ford fusion for 19,500.. sticker on it was 25,500.. initially i was completely set on a used vehicle but the prices were ranging from 14,000 to 18,000 anyway for any decent models, so the extra couple thousand for a new car that I can care for correctly was well worth it.. i am very happy with my purchase
- roberekson, on 06/30/2009, -1/+3Funny, considering it Mercedes hasn't been named North American Car of the Year for over a decade and it's been a matter of months since the Genesis had that honor.
- Jeepinator, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2I'm assuming you are thinking of GM and Ford. You want GM to succeed now given that you will be paying for its losses. But, I know what you are saying.
