- BlackOculus, on 02/10/2009, -2/+58In other news Mike Turner has yet to pick up any chicks in his hyper-modified Honda Civic.
- DBeta, on 02/10/2009, -6/+45I don't believe that the only major modification was to reduce drag. 95MPG is just too high for drag alone. My car 2003 Corolla will get, at best, 44MPG doing "highway driving" at 35MPH. That's about as optimal as you can possibly get driving. Granted, my Corolla has a higher horsepower engine and weighs a good bit more, even still, 95MPG is very suspect.
- momzilla54, on 02/10/2009, -3/+22My unmodified 1990 Honda Civic Wagon gets almost 40 mpg on the highway. And it isn't butt ugly. Even with higher gas prices, doesn't at least part of why you have a car have to do with the way it looks?
- TheEpicChocobo, on 07/28/2009, -0/+17I'll just mod my car too by cutting out the bottom and going all Flinstones style.
- Alheithinn, on 02/10/2009, -3/+17I like it! Let's see more of this. Who cares about picking up chicks if you get good mileage?
- thundercloud39, on 02/10/2009, -1/+14Good luck in changing a tire!
- Cruelapollo, on 02/10/2009, -2/+14Yeah, but it's a Dodge Neon ....
- Cretius0, on 02/10/2009, -0/+12Why does the back look like it was made out of paper mâché?
- DrakeGTA, on 02/10/2009, -0/+11I'm more impressed with this guy... http://www.1989geometro.com/
1989 Geo Metro - 75 mpg daily driver. - poidh, on 02/10/2009, -1/+12Not quite true. He did once roast a couple of chickens then place them on the back seat so that he could tell his mates he'd had some hot chicks in the car.
No one believed him though, so he just ate them. Got food poisoning actually, and was admitted to hospital where he did meet a hot chick who he started dating. But she dumped him when she saw his car. So he thought "***** it" and bought a Porsche. Been married for a few months now. His wife's pregnant actually. Twins so I hear. - inactive, on 02/10/2009, -2/+13Most hypermiler techniques have an extremely high douche factor
- Atomic05, on 02/10/2009, -2/+12You would be surprised at how heavily wind drag and weight factor into overall miles per gallon. Its why some of the most efficient cars are really just basic engines with ultralight and streamlined chassis, and its why motorcycles almost always make for far more efficient rides.
- Ommatidia, on 02/10/2009, -2/+12I disagree, Momzilla.
Your unmodified 1990 Honda Civic Wagon = ugly car and 40 mpg.
His modified 1992 CX "Aerocivic" = ugly car and 95 mpg.
Might as well just turn it into an "Aerocivic". - malanic, on 02/10/2009, -1/+11From those photos, it looks like he's torn out all the seats, except the drivers. He's probably stripped out all unnecessary trim, and half the dashboard. It's probably just a shell inside, much like a production race car.
Unfortunately, for practical, everyday, stop start city driving, aerodynamics plays a much less substantial role in fuel consumption. Under these conditions you can get drastically improved economy simply by using hypermiling techniques whilst driving.
People have built contraptions on bicycle wheels, with low horsepower engines, that get thousands of miles per gallon. - mattisallama, on 02/10/2009, -1/+10from aerocivic.com:
"Another fringe benefit is protection from damage when encountering deer on the road, the low sloped front of the car scoops them up and over the top of the car with minimal damage to both deer and car." - Frixionburne, on 02/10/2009, -0/+9And I'm sure the engine is happy without a sufficient air intake for the radiator....
- BoneStamp, on 02/10/2009, -0/+8Here's the fuel log for this car, it's average is 64.1 MPG...

- mobislink, on 02/10/2009, -0/+7Yaba Daba Doo, you will need good shoes.
- mobislink, on 02/10/2009, -1/+8He probably uses hypermiling driving techniques which sound like a pain.
- cyberwiz01, on 02/11/2009, -0/+6Epic.
- sockpuppets, on 02/10/2009, -2/+8Crysis. meme. must. die.
- Emachine, on 02/10/2009, -0/+5The body panels look like they are made of used paper towels. Other than that, it's an great achievement considering the guy did it himself without spending millions on R&D...
- jhuckleberry, on 02/10/2009, -3/+8damn . . . it looks like something out of Logan's Run.
- akerasi, on 02/10/2009, -1/+6If you're asking me personally, no. And if you don't believe me, ask me for a picture of my car sometime.
- griffrs, on 02/11/2009, -0/+5Shenanigans
- jasmus, on 02/10/2009, -0/+4No one would buy that. Plus, it may be ok in his state, but other states / countries would not allow it because of that front end and how pointy and low it is.
- inactive, on 02/10/2009, -1/+5that thing is horrid, not to mention cooling might be a problem.
- BoneStamp, on 02/10/2009, -0/+4chicks per gallon is a goose egg
- mohrt, on 02/10/2009, -0/+4A 1992 civic doesn't pass the rigid safety laws we have today. With all the emissions, crash testing, traction control, air bags, etc. etc. You are talking a lot more weight to contend with. Then of course every one wants power this and power that these days. More weight.
So a 1992 civic VX curb weight is 2094 lb. A 2009 Civic DX (lightest) is 2630 lb, and an EX is 2831 lbs. So much for mileage.
You want to get good milage and save money? Go find a 1984 civic CRX. At 1713 lb curb weight, you get 51/67 with no adjustments. - lilrabbit129, on 02/11/2009, -0/+4They can, it just wont sell or be legal.
- intekra, on 02/10/2009, -3/+7Even the aerocivic looks better than a Neon.
- asskicker32, on 02/10/2009, -0/+4Crash tests, asthetics and durability have a bit more to do with the way most cars are built; this one didnt have to sell to anyone.
Look at Solar powered cars, they are only aerodynamic exercises on wheels, but once you add bumpers that will withstand a 15mph impact, a passenger cabin that can protect all passengers in a crash and you start to get cars that look like traditional cars...
The Honda Insight and GM EV-1 were designed with a less asthetic approach and more aerodynamic motivation, but their CoD is not that much less than the Prius. Therefore, when car companies are settling on compromises, making an ugly car is usually thrown out early.
Incidentally, more advanced aero techniques like what is found on the high end lexus and MBZs such as a smoother underbody and dimpled chassis, as well as roof mounted air vanes, rear diffusers and pronounced wheel arches do make it in, as they greatly increase the CoD without negatively damaging the apperence of the car. - jasdf, on 02/11/2009, -0/+4The future of humanity cares.
- whatever01, on 02/11/2009, -0/+4Given that he made the car, changing the tires probably isn't much of a problem for him. He obviously knows how to use tools.
- Nintendesert, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3You're an idiot. If they could make a car like that they couldn't produce enough of them to meet the demand.
- spookyttws, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3And by striping out off the comfort you improve gas mileage. I'll stick to my stock RSX, it gets 35 miles to the gallon (HWY) and its soft and warm and comfortable. Plus it doesn't look like I taped a bunch of paper mache to my car.
- mehan, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3that's a ***** pussy magnet right there!
- tonyteetime, on 02/10/2009, -0/+3Where is the coffee can muffler ?
- knowitman, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3My best friend drives a 5 speed Neon and she will regularly average in the upper 30s on gas mileage.
- Atomic05, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3I didn't say the advantages were linear when comparing bikes to cars, and they aren't, but you're still getting better gas mileage with that bike than you are with that car, conservative driving or not.
Also, that 25hp equates to much higher speed and acceleration on that Ninja than that 55hp does on a Geo Metro. Don't you think that helps prove *my* point? That a smaller engine with less weight and drag has an easier time making things move? Because that's what I was getting at. The fact that most bikes are built without efficiency in mind is beside the point. - ator1, on 02/10/2009, -0/+3Needs more duct tape.
- IRaphy, on 02/10/2009, -1/+4Why aren't these ideas taken into consideration when developing today's cars???
I mean seriously, not making it paper mache like this guy, but I'm sure there are designers who can do this and make it aesthetically pleasing but there seems to be just silence and disinterest coming from auto makers. - ahhell, on 02/10/2009, -7/+10Ugliest car ever.
BHAHHAHAHAH - iagainsti, on 02/10/2009, -1/+4The DIY attitude at it's best! good for you guy!
- feliks2, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2Clear people who does this kind of ***** aren't exactly inteligent.
- awesometastic1, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2My unmodified 88 Toyota Tercel gets 45 mpg on the highway in the summer (40 in the winter). This last year it was down to 40 and 35 respectivley. It turns out one should replace the spark plugs more than once every 12 years ;-). Back up to 45 mpg baby!!! (two of the spark plug heads were gone in fact; so apparently it runs well on 2 cylinders :-)
- bobertoq, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2What's the city MPG? And I would imagine parking with that vehicle could be difficult.
- cowsgonemadd3, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2Unless he is on the street walking....I bet he can afford to take a girl on a date.
- Hurricane, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2He has no new ideas to offer, just a kid red-neck modding his old Civic with very old aerodynamic design ideas.
