Motorcycle death percentage of motorcycle riders vs Vehicle deaths percentage of total vehicle drivers? - ballsanya, on 11/08/2009, -0/+40Thank you. Of course if there are 1,000,000 cars vs 10,000 motorcycles on the road, there are going to be more car accidents than motorcycle accidents. Show me ratios.

- cosulliv755, on 11/08/2009, -1/+16I have a dent in the calf muscle of my left leg roughly the size of a rugby ball. I walk with a permanent limp and I have no cartilage in my left knee. On the days with a y in the name, if you squint you can just make out the "peu" from peugeot stamped in to the atrophied muscle of my left leg. It hurts when it rains. It hurts when it doesn't rain. It hurts when I walk, and it hurts when I sit. When I wake up at night screaming as the left over muscle in my leg tries to rip its self off the bone of my leg, it hurts.
Watching a fat useless woman in a ford explorer run the red light in front of my car, slamming on her brakes with shock and awe as she realizes where she is. Screeching brakes are all I can hear as her car enters the intersection, all the while she never lets go of the cell phone jammed rabidly to flabby joules. Its now that I think to my self, my leg hurts but then again I think, it could have been a lot worse.
I will love motorcycles until the day I die. I will hate stupid people who don't pay attention to the road in their cars, until the day I die. - spritom, on 11/08/2009, -0/+15For all the info, it doesn't tell us how hazardous motorcycles are when compared to other vehicles types. In the two spots where it does break the numbers down by vehicle type the graphic doesn't give us comparative information of how many of each type of vehicle are on the road.
- BarryMcCawqiner, on 11/08/2009, -0/+12If they spent less time trying to make the data look like a motorcycle, and more time trying make it comprehensible this would be interesting.. or useful. Buried.
- DonnyW, on 11/08/2009, -0/+12Is it just me, or does this infographic contain no useful information?
- rtcrooks, on 11/08/2009, -0/+10Motorcyclists rarely get it from behind.
- gambit2121, on 11/08/2009, -1/+112 door sedan = coupe
and how is a passenger car different from a sedan? - jordantneff, on 11/08/2009, -0/+8That was my first thought as well. This infographic is very misleading in it's data. I went and tried to find data to figure out what the ratio was. Unfortunately the most info I could find was for 2001 (consistently at least) and from what it shows deaths and accidents have been increasing steadily since then but here are my findings: (note: these statistics are for the US only)
Motorcycles on the road: 4,900,000
Motorcycle fatalities: 3,200
% of cyclists killed: 0.065% or 1 in every 1,531
Cars (passenger vehicles) on the road: 226,000,000
Car fatalities: 37,850
% of drivers killed: 0.016% or 1 in every 5,970
If someone wants to check my math go ahead. I'm pretty decent at math but I'm no statistics expert so if I'm wrong I'd love to know your findings :)

- u8eR, on 11/08/2009, -0/+7Also, of course most injuries occur during the day time. That's when most motorcyclists are out. I would like to know daytime injuries relative to vehicle miles driven during the daytime. Since the graphic says 60% are injured in the daytime and assuming more than 60% of motorcycle driving occurs during the day, I'd assume nighttime injuries are disproportionately higher.
- czarcasm, on 11/08/2009, -0/+7Auto accidents kill 40,000+ people in the US annually, more than all violent crimes(guns, stabbing, etc) combined by orders of magnitude.
I suppose that makes cars "MURDERMOBILES"
::gasp:: - RadiantWaves, on 11/08/2009, -1/+7First of all, that's a ridiculously large banner across the top of his/her blog page. :|
Second, I wish I could find some statistics on the safety of motorcycles based only on proper use and careful riding. I see so many riders weaving in and out of traffic. So many are young kids taking chances and so on and so on. These have to weight the statistics pretty heavily. What I want to know is, how many times more likely are you to get into a crash and die if you take proper training, wear proper gear and ride carefully and defensively. - SpinkickFolly, on 11/08/2009, -4/+10Oh noes! Its dangerous!
Its all about the skill and anticipation. Throwing these numbers in my face will never get me off my bike. - louiebaur, on 11/08/2009, -2/+8How bout a few burnouts to go along with these stats?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEoONua80nI - blankman, on 11/08/2009, -1/+6See if they did that, then "rideamoto.com" couldn't twist the stats to fit their point of view.

Actually, this is far from true. Part of getting on a motorcycle is recognizing that you are willing to take a significant amount of risk that not just you, but some other demented driver might make a mistake that could very well lead to serious injury or death. The notion that you can avoid this by proper caution is a dangerous one -- you can certainly lower the risk significantly, but getting on the road in *any* vehicle you take on a certain amount of risk -- no matter how defensive a driver you may be. - GamerX, on 11/08/2009, -1/+5thanks for the info
/s - dandaman0345, on 11/08/2009, -0/+4THANK YOU
- generalalcazar, on 11/08/2009, -0/+4Same for the "Motorcyclists Injured - by helmet use" graph. It says that more people are injured while wearing a helmet, than not. Well, that's true, because most riders wear helmets. But, this does not show that wearing a helmet is going to make you more likely to be injured. This tells us nothing about how effective helmets are.
I ride a Kawasaki, by the way. - SaulBey, on 11/08/2009, -0/+4still a bit bike-curious.
- anthropodeus, on 11/08/2009, -0/+4it's completely useless without knowing what percentage of vehicle users are motorcycle users. in other words, it tells us that x motorcyclists are injured and y car drivers are injured each year, but it doesnt offer reference numbers that would allow someone to say that "40% of motorcyclists are injured each year" and "10% of car drivers are injured each year"
- krymson, on 11/08/2009, -0/+4I was going to repost this on a motorcycle forum i read, but then I realized most of the graphics are useless and some are actually misleading.
For instance "Motorycycle injuries by helmet use": The graphic makes it look like not wearing a helmet will prevent injury, when in fact the reason there are less unhelmeted injuries is ONLY because a LOT MORE people wear helmets than not. - nem0fazer, on 11/08/2009, -0/+4Pretty similar to me. No cartilage in my left ankle. Left arm clicks when I move my wrist. Hurts everyday. Limp every day. Always will. Silly 70 something cow in a pickup who drove straight past her stop sign and t-boned me. Given up riding now after 2 accidents, 2 ops, 14 pins, 2 plates.
I miss it everyday. - MonoDede, on 11/08/2009, -0/+4Sorry to hear that happened to you brother. Always sad to see a rider taken out because of some dumbass driver.
- GauteHauk, on 11/08/2009, -1/+4But it really is a pretty graphic, even if the info is a bit useless.
- MonoDede, on 11/08/2009, -0/+3Hmm I don't see that now, author must have changed it. Same goes for the sedan comment below.
- Taiyoryu, on 11/08/2009, -0/+3Where's the statistic that tracks who was at fault in each motorcycle accident? How many of those accidents were the fault of another driver, presumably in a car?
- chrisdohrm, on 11/08/2009, -1/+4There are more cars than motorcycles, so no ***** there are more car accidents/injuries than motorcycle accidents/injuries. They should have done the amount of motorcyclists-to-motorcycle injuries. Which they didn't. Which is why this infograph is a ***** attempt to prove that motorcycles aren't dangerous.
- krymson, on 11/08/2009, -0/+3dugg you cuz of your name.
- scfishy, on 11/08/2009, -0/+3Pointless. Also, to address the "murdercycles" mentality, it is true that it is dangerous. We know it is dangerous. We do it anyway because it is fun and we like it.
Life is too short and messed up to waste it by living in a bubble. It is nice outside. I'll go ride my sport murdercycle. - LoCoPyRo, on 11/08/2009, -0/+3According to the Federal Highway Administration there were 4,303,762 registered motorcycles in the US in 2000. According to Bureau of Transportation Statistics there were 7,138,476 registered motorcycles in 2007. Also "Out of a total 129,141,982 commuters in this country (USA, 2003) 147,703 of them ride motorcycles to work regularly. That’s only .0011 percent." from ridetowork.org.
Using the registered numbers for 2007, with 5000 fatalities and 103,000 injuries a year from this infographic then 0.070% of people who have registered a motorcycle are killed every year and 1.44% are injured. I am not sure how many of these registered users actively use their motorcycles so the percentages of motorcycle use to injury and death could be higher.
The number of total passenger vehicles according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics is 254,403,082 in 2007. Passenger cars in particular are 135,932,930. Using the numbers from the infographic this is 0.014% killed and 1.76% injured for passenger cars. Again the numbers could be higher due to people who have registered not actually actively driving their vehicles.

http://www.bts.gov/publications/national_transport ... - howdareyou, on 11/08/2009, -0/+2The amount of doors doesn't always define a car as a sedan or a coupe. There are some 2 door sedans and 4 door coupes.
And I'm not even sure what you're referring to unless you forgot to hit the reply button, because I don't see any mention of 2 door sedans or anything about passenger cars being different than sedans in that infographic. - 3A2D50, on 11/08/2009, -0/+2As mentioned before, not all motorcycles are Harleys.
- thericeroket, on 11/08/2009, -0/+2i think all motorcycle riders accept that it's dangerous and the ones that don't get hurt always keep that in mind
a rider who checks his mirrors constantly, always has his head on a swivel, and doesn't do retarded ***** won't get killed or in an accident. It's the same that goes for car drivers. You wear the proper protection and technique but you still go down the 'right' way (motorcycle racing/track days) and you'll be fine too except for some bruises and a bruised ego.
motorcycling like other dangerous things just happens to also attract a breed of stupidity in great abundance and hence the great proportion of accidents. - cruzlee, on 11/08/2009, -0/+2After getting my motorcycle theory certificate here in the Netherlands (needed to qualify for an license exam) all present were informed that a Dutch motorcycle driver has 13x the average chance to die in a traffic accident.

for those of you saying FAGS like omg thats so funny: southparkstudios.com..............watch the episode and educate yourself about south park and don't be a poser just trying to quote south park on digg to be "cool".
funny episode btw - GorfTron, on 11/08/2009, -0/+2The most common cycle collision is being cut off by a vehicle making a left turn across your lane. Cycles are just not always seen or respected. Watch for this one.
