- jboitnott, on 12/26/2008, -0/+12Hertz and other private companies might as well try to get into the Zip Car game. With the economy in tatters already -- companies need to see how they can get creative -- and even green.
- jfsimard79, on 12/28/2008, -0/+6***** you, I work for Hertz in customer service...oh wait, you are correct.
- laughtears, on 12/27/2008, -1/+6ZipCar shouldn't worry too much if Hertz ports over their standard level of customer (dis)service
- Insomnya3AM, on 12/26/2008, -0/+5Zipcar has the coverage, but Hertz has way more locations. If they could find a way to tie their locations into this program, they'd be winrar.
- Joeymarshmallow, on 12/28/2008, -0/+4People who don't drive a lot can also rent these and it's cheaper than buying their own car... not just for vacation.
- adholes, on 12/26/2008, -1/+5Not bad but no one will ever be as NICE as Zipcar.
- sanman, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3totally agree, this is the next step of evolution in this particular service industry
btw, on a related note, I read that lease-to-own is starting to take off in the housing industry

so that's an interesting approach borrowed from the car leasing industry - mehan, on 12/28/2008, -0/+3who cares that you're broke?
- peters1023, on 12/28/2008, -0/+3You can't afford 1.60 a gallon?
But I'm assuming you're on broadband..... - mehan, on 12/28/2008, -0/+3Cool concept, but if you need a car for more than a couple of hours, it becomes cheaper to just rent it for the full day.
- hardigree, on 12/26/2008, -0/+2It probably wouldn't work with their more rural rental fleets, but for their transit-accessible urban stores it could be a hit.
- GrammerPants, on 12/28/2008, -0/+2Then you are not their target for their business model. After all why target people that can't buy your product.
In other words they don't care about you either.
"good pt. digg is cheaper than a therapist." Valid point my friend valid point. - NJank, on 12/28/2008, -1/+3ipod enabled? that's nice. but just once I'd like to find a rental agent that will lend you a female-to-female headphone adapter to use the AUX input that pretty much every rental car has nowadays. I always remember that I didn't pack mine right about the time I'm sitting in the rental staring at that useless hole and my MP3 player which would sound so much nicer through the stereo than my head-phones. That and it's illegal for me to use the headphones in both ears in most states, so there goes stereo sound.
- threenuns, on 12/28/2008, -1/+2WOW, those fees are crazy! I can't believe anyone is paying them those ridiculous prices
Where I live you pay about 9$/Month (or 99/year) and 3.70/hour (1.50/hour after 11pm) for some Toyota hybrid, you can also just swipe your membership card and get in the car. No need to book in advance, you see the car, you swipe your card, you get in and drive - hotsauzz, on 12/28/2008, -0/+1Took them long enough! Big fan of zipcar but I likes me some competition
- BradDoenges, on 12/29/2008, -0/+1http://www.zipcar.com/nyc/check-rates . As for why they are so expensive, I have no idea. I see that zip car charges a $50 annual fee so Hertz charging $50 a month seems a little ridiculous.
- peters1023, on 12/28/2008, -1/+2links or it's meaningless numbers
- rwmacdonald, on 12/28/2008, -0/+1Communauto is cheaper by a long shot than both Zipcar and Hertz.
- lostinseganet, on 08/28/2009, -0/+1Zipcar pays for gas and insurance in their fee. That will turn some heads maybe even yours.
- threenuns, on 12/28/2008, -0/+1studentcar.nl
- ccb621, on 12/28/2008, -0/+1Maybe it's just the fact that the service is in New York (higher insurance, perhaps?), but Connect seems a lot more expensive than Zipcar. In the Boston area, I pay $50 per YEAR and can pick up a Prius for $7/hr, BMW 325i for $13.25/hr, and a few other cars (Jetta, Mini, Civic) for $9-11/hr.
Do any Diggers know the Zipcar prices in NYC and why they are so expensive? - MindStalker, on 12/28/2008, -0/+1It depends upon what city your in, coverage is spare in Atlanta, but in NY your generally never more than a few blocks from a zipcar. Rent on for your drive to the store, rent a different one for your drive back.
- generaleet, on 12/28/2008, -0/+0winrar?
- needmorechange, on 12/28/2008, -0/+0good pt. digg is cheaper than a therapist.
- benseote, on 05/21/2009, -0/+0looks like a pretty convenient service, affordable too
http://truckaccidents.wordpress.com/ - sashimi6, on 12/28/2008, -1/+0I think I see this project crashing...
http://www.entertonement.com/clips/45541/car-crash
Zipcar is well established and is more than likely to crush any competition. - xifanlogo, on 12/28/2008, -4/+2Not bad but no one will ever be as NICE as Zipcar.
- needmorechange, on 12/28/2008, -4/+1Surprising this is the top story on digg. who cares?
I can't even afford to put gas in my car right now, much less rent one while on vacation.

What is Digg?
