- badwithcomputer, on 07/03/2008, -2/+66you know what really grinds my gears? i'm driving home from work on tuesday july 1 when the law went into effect next to a cop who is talking on his phone for about 5 miles.
- Richie311, on 07/03/2008, -5/+67"Hi Mom, do I sound different?*pause* No I'm not gay"
Lol that just made my day. - eqlou, on 07/03/2008, -2/+36As bad as it sounds, this isn't wasn't that far from the truth. Especially the eating and driving.
- arretx, on 07/03/2008, -6/+25How can a law like this make any sense? There's a radio, GPS, a myriad of various column mounted controls, children, cigarettes, and God knows what else possibly happening in the car. We've been screwing around with scan and seek for years. How is this going to help? Using hands free isn't something that should be enforced by a law. Just shoot the ones who can't seem to figure out how to carry on a conversation on the phone in the car and let the skilled drivers through.
- JDOG, on 07/03/2008, -0/+19I used to love this guy's show on Comedy Central. Was all about social engineering. Made me want to get one of those soda cup holders installed in my trunk.
- thelock65, on 07/03/2008, -0/+18yeah, and especially the wood flute. i carve those all the time
- richiewrt, on 07/03/2008, -0/+15So quit texting while you drive.
- floridiot2, on 07/03/2008, -0/+13I'm just gonna hold a plastic bar up to my head everywhere I drive.
- scottswan79, on 07/03/2008, -0/+10I live in California, and they aren't wasting any time giving out tickets. They gave out the first ticket for cell phone use while driving at 12:30am. Only 30 minutes after the law went into effect

Here in the Bay Area, people are always distracted in their cars, and it's not always because of phones.
The problem I see: there are a ton of people who think that this law is legit because having both hands free is actually safer. WRONG. This law may actually work, not for that reason. It may serve as a deterrent from using one's phone while driving, but there are other problems.
Studies show that talking on your cell phone while driving is not dangerous because of holding the phone to your ear. It's the fact that you're talking to someone who's not in the car; the part of your brain that is responsible for environmental awareness is being used to visualize, per se, the other person on the other end of the line who you are talking to. It's about the equivalent of having 1-3 beers, as one UC cognitive psych professor quoted from a study. Talking with someone in the car is not as taxing on these mental resources.
I've used my speakerphone a few times now as a result of this law going into effect, and I have to say that having to speak louder and fumbling with the phone is much more distracting than holding it to my ear. - Waterpig222, on 07/03/2008, -0/+6This is politicians yet again making laws based on no scientic information. YOU HOLDING A PHONE DOESNT MAKE YOU A BAD DRIVER! TALKING IS WHAT DISTRACTS YOU!!!
Its either you believe that driving while talking should not be allowed, or we put it with the other ***** we do that distracts us. (changing CDs Doing makeup) WHOOT for legislation that helps sell bluetooth head sets! - hotpuck6, on 07/03/2008, -0/+6yup,
it's not having a hand occupied, it's focusing too much on your conversation that causes accidents. - cowsgonemadd3, on 07/03/2008, -0/+6I did not see a donkey.
- corkdorkdan, on 07/03/2008, -2/+7This has always been my feeling too.
1) Answer the phone like a normal person.
or
2) Phone rings. Crap, that new law took effect! Where's my hands free unit? *digs in glove box* Here it is. *untangles cord* *tries to hold phone, plug in headset jack, and hold steering wheel at the same time* Answer phone and try not to tangle the wire on my gear shift. - cam0man, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5is that the same skyler from that old comedy central show 'The Con'?
I actually did notice that once I got my hands free for july 1st that I felt a lot more liberated while driving and talking, it's very awesome. - craineum, on 07/03/2008, -3/+7Dugg for "In Memory of George Carlin"
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -2/+6Excellent Video!
Hey, does this mean police radios, coffee and dognuts will also need to be hands free, or just cell phones? - TomSawyer, on 07/03/2008, -2/+5Way to miss the point, comrade!
- wezults, on 07/03/2008, -2/+5Very true, I had to get a blutooth to comply with the law and, maybe i just have to get used to it, but to me messing with an extra piece is more distarcting than simply holding the phone up to my ear.
- IllBeBack, on 07/03/2008, -1/+4The law was proposed at a time when texting was not prevalent. Now that texting is prevalent, the same person that proposed this legislation has proposed more legislation that would outlaw texting.
Now stop using your cell phone while you're driving and pay some ***** attention to the road. - bennylava123, on 07/03/2008, -3/+6Blue toothing it!
- Gutterpunk, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2They used to say the same for safety belt laws.
Good thing that they saw the errors of their ways some years after and repelled those laws! - basevillin, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2Using your sonicare improperly there buddy!
- DNABeast, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2The problem is that talking on the phone is much more of a problem than talking to someone in the car. When you talking on the phone you're brain uses a lot of resources visualising that person and the location they are in. This takes you mentally out of the situation that you're in (Driving a gigantic, slow yet no less effective bullet).
- Twee, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2Every modern browser has a pop-up ad blocker built-in. The only one that doesn't is IE 6.
If you're using Firefox, you can also get Ad-Block Plus. Stop bitching. - seeyounorth, on 07/03/2008, -2/+4George Carlin would have hated the name Skyler...
- AuriniDMJ, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2***** like you are why they thought this law would be a good idea.
- Renegade.eit, on 07/03/2008, -1/+3Yeah, I agree, this isn't wasn't anything new.
- Hnnnnnghhh, on 07/03/2008, -1/+3Yeah I hate how my car automatically slows to 50mph when I only have 1 hand on the steering wheel. Someone should do something about that.
- ep53, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2They are basically the same video....
- thecwin, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1Ever had to make an emergency turn in order to avoid an accident? If you're holding a phone (or anything for that matter), it can make it far more difficult than it needs to be. The time it takes to move the hand from the head to the wheel can be fatal. For me, driving while holding a phone is too difficult. I drive a manual without power steering, and can't do that shoulder thing.
I think talking is the main distraction, however, but the worst thing about a phone is that if you have to stop talking because of something happening on the road, the person on the other end of the line usually gets frustrated or thinks the signals fading or something. When someone's sitting next to you in the car, they're usually more forgiving about you prioritising the road over the converstaion. - viacombusta, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Did anyone else get nervous and think he was going to drill into his finger whilst making the wood flute?
- CurlyFoot, on 07/03/2008, -1/+2Doing that ***** with a 5-speed takes some serious skill
- yeahaboutthat, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1As I was watching the skit, it occurred to me that, with a few exceptions, I had accomplished each one of those bone-headed feats at some point in my 35+ years of driving. I remember one time trying to cut off the safety wrap of a CD using an open and very sharp pocket blade while going down the highway. Don't recall what the CD was, but I must have thought at the time it was worth dying for....
funny skit though. - venson, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1We have had this law in Chicago for quite some time. But I always see people on cell phones. On average, waiting to cross a street on the north side of chicago, I'll see 20 cars go by, with probably 10 of them on cell phones. Not sure who are hands free, because you don't see a lot of bluetooths here, I think they sell more on the south side.

http://hyipnews.freehostia.com/hyip - AuriniDMJ, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1It's all about time and place, and defencive driving. When you're cruising through a tight-knit downtown street, with cars turning, and people walking, it's a bad idea - if you have to talk, make the conversation quick, and keep your foot over the break. When you're on the highway, staying in your lane, in light traffic - go ahead. Just add another car length to your following distance.
Any good driver will realize this instinctively. The problem is bad drivers, not cell phones. When you're turning a blind corner, you don't talk on your cell, light up a smoke, change the CD, or eat a damn sandwich - unfortunately, some of the doofs out there are oblivious.
But wait a minute - isn't dangerous driving already a crime? - mrASSMAN, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Washington State banned cell phone use on July 1st as well. ***** will be ***** though.
- kentwidman, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1The A flat is actually a B.
- RuyGuy, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1OMG, I don't give a ***** if someone said it already. Someone also said 'OMG', so don't ever use it again. daif pls kthx

- antdude, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1Hehe. Did George Carlin say anything about cellphone, distractions, and driving?
- sirjyea, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1im going to have to make a note of all the traffic violations that were committed in this video,
And then translate Taming of the Shrew into German - OpCzar, on 07/03/2008, -1/+1Did that car have two steering wheels?
- Mothrog, on 07/03/2008, -1/+1"I am a ***** ass driver."
Fixed. - arretx, on 07/05/2008, -0/+0How would one explain this phenomenon? When I am distracted by someone in my car through conversation, I miss turns, have to back track, and lose focus of my destination because I get into the conversation.
When I'm on the phone, I never miss turns, I am extremely focused on what's happening outside of the car, and the ride generally goes very smoothly, because I'm actively involved in the process of safety as a result of talking on the phone.
But I realize that this is me...and I have witnessed countless women (sorry ladies, you outnumber men in this) swerving and weaving in their lane and I see that they're on the phone, and most of the time they share common characteristics. They're typically blonde and baby boomers. Go figure. - Twee, on 07/03/2008, -1/+1I'm not your buddy, friend!
