- BREZZZ, on 07/15/2009, -4/+79My car is a hybrid, it runs off of electric for the first second I start it.
- Zomgondo, on 07/15/2009, -1/+58That way they can save even more fuel by walking!
- TotalHavoc, on 07/15/2009, -9/+52I understand expectant mothers and handicap getting closer parking.... But Hybrids? isn't just plain bigotry? Providing benefits to one class, those that can afford and have a Hybrid, and denying those that can not?
- ennuisquared, on 07/15/2009, -2/+28Why can't hybrids be relegated to parking only in the far back of the lots?
- Bitties, on 07/15/2009, -1/+25I blame Stan Marsh and his catchy song.
Stan: Come on people now, people now. People now, come on people now. Got to drive Hybrids people now. People now, people now, people now. Hybrids are for people now, people now. Good for people driving people now. Get a Hybrid be good people now. We have all got to be people now. People driving Hybrid people now. People now, people now, Hybrid now. Hybrid people driving people now. Come on people let's be people now. Hybrid people driving people now. Come on everybody be people now. - Colecoman1982, on 07/15/2009, -0/+20Mine gets over 100mpg if I turn the engine off while coasting down a hill.
- Jamnajar, on 07/15/2009, -2/+20I would park in those spaces even with my Tank (SUV)...If they complain tell them it runs on Jesus AND gas and so is a hybrid! /S
- Leezus, on 07/15/2009, -1/+18Motorcycles have been getting great gas mileage for years. Where's out parking spaces?
- Connelky, on 07/15/2009, -0/+16how about i get a good parking spot because I kept my piece of ***** car instead of wasting energy having toyota build me a new one?
- palmer, on 07/15/2009, -0/+15In the words of some comedian I can't remember:
My car's a hybrid: It burns gas AND oil. - dime5150, on 07/15/2009, -3/+17Key'ing will go up..
- Fletchnuts, on 07/15/2009, -0/+13Oh the irony...
http://www.wired.com/autopia/2008/05/the-ultimate- ... - singebkdrft, on 07/15/2009, -1/+14How about diesels? My VW gets 50MPG...
- illinest, on 07/15/2009, -0/+13I can't wait until I see one. I'll park my 350 cube V8 corvette that only gets 14 mpg in it.
- JDoorjam, on 07/15/2009, -7/+20Parking lots inherently provide benefits to one class (drivers) to the detriment of others (pedestrians, public transit users, bicyclists). Buildings that are set back from the road and have large parking lots in front of them demonstrate "bigotry" against those who would prefer to use more sustainable methods of getting there (or simply don't have the option of using a car).
ALL planning decisions put some groups over other groups. This one is just more explicit. - Khast, on 07/15/2009, -0/+13Hmm, maybe they should put some tiny parking places closer to the building just for motorcycles so you can have your "prime" parking places.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but motorcycles have the same rights on the road as any other licensed vehicle. The only difference is, most states actually require you to take an extra proficiency test to get the endorsement. - wakingrufus, on 07/15/2009, -0/+12its a hell of a drug
- richiewrt, on 07/15/2009, -4/+15How about I just go buy a Hummer and park there anyway and tell the store owners to get bent.
- edrainkona, on 07/15/2009, -1/+12Buried for ***** title.
- zoomaKabu, on 07/15/2009, -0/+10You might not want to get that close 'cause I'm going to run over the sign with my monster truck.
- JDoorjam, on 07/15/2009, -4/+14Why can't the entire lot be relegated to the back of the store so that pedestrians, cyclists, and public transit users can go right to the front of stores?
- robbob, on 07/15/2009, -1/+10Go to Fry's, they have chargers for Electrical Cars right next to the Handicap spaces.
I applaud them for doing more than just erecting a sign. - JDoorjam, on 07/15/2009, -1/+10This picture was taken in an Ikea parking lot, which means it's the decision of the private owners. They can incentivize whatever they want so long as it doesn't interfere with government-mandated handicapped spaces, and local parking regulations. They could have pogo-only parking.
- boogieordie, on 07/15/2009, -1/+10If you need someone to explain why that's mutually beneficial then you're really missing the point about a number of things.
- cheekdog, on 07/15/2009, -5/+14i DON'T understand expectant mother parking. if you're too pregnant to get through the parking lot, you're too pregnant to waddle through the ***** mall.
- theonlywizdum, on 07/15/2009, -1/+9But I don't get a tax break for driving a Geo Storm that gets 37MPG. Nope, only people that can drop $50,000+ on a symbol are allowed to get tax breaks.
- theonlywizdum, on 07/15/2009, -0/+8I second this. last year my university waived the parking permit fee to all cars that got more than 35mpg, but only if those cars were hybrids. If you want to help the environment, get a used car and stop buying new *****.
- lorem1000, on 07/15/2009, -1/+9Also has to do with the growing bracketing of what is considered handicapped. Apparently fat is a handicap now. You're allowed to eat to the point that you're disabled and in need of a shorter walk to get your Big Macs and cheese fries.
- BrewBeau, on 07/15/2009, -3/+11Is there an extra charge when an oversized vehicle gets towed?
- Taiyoryu, on 07/15/2009, -0/+8Some places have dedicated motorcycle parkings spaces but those are rare. I've often seen motorcycles parked in various striped zones or parked up on a sidewalk in a corner out of the way. Like a bike or scooter, motorcycles can squeeze into many places a car cannot.
- rheaume, on 07/15/2009, -1/+9"I don't get a tax break for driving a Geo Storm that gets 37MPG"
No, but you got a nice break from having a sex life so thats nice - LoSwaga, on 07/15/2009, -0/+7Here in Fort Collins, CO we decided to just start taking away parking spaces and replace them with bike racks that can hold 20-30 bikes instead. Love it!
http://www.fcgov.com/bicycling/ - kinseyincanada, on 07/15/2009, -2/+9its an incentive to buy hybrids, you get parking, some places you get tax breaks, HOV privileges. Its just a parking space its really not that big of a deal.
- mrjoshuanc, on 07/15/2009, -0/+7They do. And if I see a hybrid only spot, I'm parking my H2 in it. Much like stop signs in private parking lots, it's optional ;)
- inactive, on 07/15/2009, -3/+10I was mad about this at first, but then I realized some people are stupid enough to follow what the spot says. Thus allowing me to park my gas guzzler in the spot and get a close parking spot.
When I went to Whole Foods I saw spots like these, but the only people parked in them were SUVs, pickups, and my '87 Buick. - skektek, on 07/15/2009, -1/+7I saw stores like that in Texas. The first 15 spots of *every row* were dedicated to Handicap, Expectant Mothers, and Seniors.
Growing up I remember that there were few handicapped parking spots and they were seldom used. Today there are at least 10x more spots reserved for handicaps and they almost always used. The real kicker is that the people that park in these spots (with a handicap licence plate) usually don't appear to be physically handicapped at all. - snookky, on 07/15/2009, -1/+7in "progressive" towns like boulder, co ALL the good parking spots are reserved for either: handicapped, hybrid vehicles, senior citizens, or expecting mothers. little wonder why the city has a parking problem that only gets worse.
- Branchex, on 07/16/2009, -1/+7This all part of this stupid notion that if a car is a hybrid it's automatically better for the environment than any gas only car. The fact is that hybrid systems only improve millage, a gas only car with the same mileage will pollute the same amount.
- Cjaiceman, on 07/15/2009, -0/+6Diesels are clean now. Go look at the VW diesels, they are just as quiet as the gas versions, produce no visible emissions, and are better on the environment than gas engines of the same size. They also hurt the environment less than a Prius to manufacture. They also can run on BioDiesel, the Prius can't even run on E-85... *shame on the Prius*
- MooseOfReason, on 07/15/2009, -5/+11How elitist!
- Bluesky0010, on 07/15/2009, -6/+12What do you think they do in bars/clubs? "women get in free night" sound familiar? When that goes away, then people can complain about this and call out bigotry/sexism.
- publiclurker, on 07/15/2009, -0/+6Giving perks like this was rather common when hybrids were new. It gave a little bit more of an incentive to be on the bleeding edge of technology. not that they have entered the mainstream, however, there is not really any reason to keep the perks.
- joegibes, on 07/15/2009, -1/+7Better would be a "50+mpg Vehicle" space. That would open it up to motorcycles and people with efficient diesels and such.
- d3dm, on 07/15/2009, -0/+6If it was truly designed to reduce emissions, then the cars/trucks that produced the most exhaust should be in those lanes, rather than sitting in gridlock for an hour belching out <insert your favorite greenhouse gas here>.
- Cjaiceman, on 07/15/2009, -0/+6Good thing Fry's doesn't have a store here in CO, I would use those plugs to keep my Diesel power vehicle warm (which gets about 45-50 mpg, more than the snot box prius). Screw the prius.
- dhughes, on 07/15/2009, -0/+6 I'm going to stick a windmill in the back of my 4x4 and stick on a hybrid decal.
- mrmidgetman, on 07/16/2009, -0/+5I dont understand the support behind electric cars. They are powered by electricity that has been produced by burning fossil fuels in a power plant to avoid burning fossil fuels while driving?
- JasonCox, on 07/15/2009, -2/+7The best part about these parking spaces? They can tow you if you park in a Handicapped stop but they have no way of enforcing the Expecting or Hybrid spots... Plus for all they know I could be an mad scientist who impregnated myself for ***** and giggles and then souped up my Pontiac with a Hybrid system. :-P
- inactive, on 07/15/2009, -0/+5I see what you did there.
- BrewBeau, on 07/15/2009, -2/+7Sure you do.
