- fiftycents, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Priuses and hybrids are not good for the environment in general at all. The batteries and motors are horrible to produce, do not last long, and are the worst to dispose of. There are plenty of cars out there that get good gas mileage, there is no magic to a hybrid, people just feel they need a technological solution to gas mileage. Just because Toyota says its good for the environment to make you want it, doesn't mean its true!
The cars listed in this article are great. They are very cheap, and very efficient. Way to save money doubly! A Prius is $25,000. That will take a long time to make that money back from your slightly better gas mileage.
I'm glad there is finally an article in a major source that points this out! We need efficiency, but we don't need hybrids. - goldengreg, on 05/27/2008, -0/+0Interesting article with many good points. The one point that is left out is that the Prius gas motor shuts off whenever its not needed. Thus giving it 80% fewer harmful emissions than a regular 4 door sedan. All other hybrids do this as well (between 50-80% less emissions). Hybrids are not a long term solution and buying a used anything is always better than new. Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. But don't overlook any of the positives.
