- prisoner24601, on 04/24/2009, -2/+130I've always been baffled at how often there are identical vehicles with multiple badges:
Chevy Blazer = GMC Jimmy = Oldsmobile Bravada
Chevy Lumina APV = Pontiac Transport
etc.
What's the point? It's like someone has an emotional attachment to a company name. Either actually produce a different line of vehicles at each company or shut down the "me too" divisions already. Seems like that's what GM is doing and it makes perfect sense. - pitdog, on 04/25/2009, -1/+60at first i thought this "Pontiac demise" was a new model ...
- silver26, on 04/24/2009, -3/+60Pontiac has some great cars - G8, Solstice, G6 ... but that's not enough to save a brand that has suffered so much abuse over the years.
- catpockets, on 04/25/2009, -2/+55I know that hating GM or anything American is the cool thing to do, but DAMN I'm glad I bought my '09 G8 GT in the last few months. It's a fantastic car, coming from a guy who had nothing but Japanese cars until this one.
GM's Holden Division is doing some amazing things, and GM in general is starting to become smarter. Too bad they couldn't do it about five years ago. - 80hd, on 04/25/2009, -0/+43but they are still built on the same chassis, with the same body panels, and the interior is almost identical.
adding $300 bucks worth of options makes it a different package, not a different vehicle. - miketest, on 04/24/2009, -3/+44I wonder if they’re going to have to make the grave a little bigger than usual to accommodate the “wide track”.
- trudesea, on 04/25/2009, -2/+38The best cars I've ever owned were Pontiac. My 98 Grand Prix GTP and 04 GTO
The GTO stays with me until I no longer breathe :) - SupremeLeaders, on 04/25/2009, -25/+58I hope they announce the UAW's demise....
- schoate09, on 04/25/2009, -9/+34Shame, Pontiac has some cool cars. Even the rebadges look sportier under the Pontiac name.
They should have kept it a Performance brand.
V8/RWD, V6 Turbo/RWD, I4 Turbo/AWD.
With manual transmission available on all models/all trims(the highest trim G8 doesn't have a manual option). - miketest, on 04/24/2009, -0/+23I really agree with your comments. There is no point of carrying so many makes when you cannot manage them properly.
- bdbr, on 04/25/2009, -0/+22Buick is huge in China.
- jjallday, on 04/25/2009, -0/+22There's a good chance the G8 lives on in some form. Let's hope so.
Also, does this mean that all the mulleted guys driving Firechickens from the 80s now have collector's items on their hands? - JasonCox, on 04/25/2009, -1/+23This just sucks. Pontiac is selling twice as many vehicles of Buick so why is Pontiac getting the axe?
And yes, I'm a Pontiac owner. - stk198323, on 04/25/2009, -0/+20Really, the highest model G8 doesn't have a manual optional?
Check your facts before posting!
The GXP is available with a 6 speed manual transmission:
http://www.gm.com/vehicles/results.jsp?brand=ponti ... - hawkspur, on 04/25/2009, -14/+34And nothing of value was lost.
- ZPWeeks, on 04/25/2009, -0/+20So am I.
- Solkre, on 04/25/2009, -2/+21Dugg for “faster, deeper".
- terrya64, on 04/25/2009, -1/+19I think I have had more Pontiacs than any other car.
64 Tempest, 65 Lemans, 71 Lemans, 73 Lemans, 67 Catalina " first car I bought", 85 Grand Prix, 76 Firebird, 78 Firebird Formula, 87 6000.
The Catalina had a 428, never forget the day I smoked that Vette, Must have been embarassing for him to get beat by a freakin 4 door land yacht.
Pontiac R.I.P - smacksaw, on 04/25/2009, -7/+25Now what will people who want cars that only look fast buy?
What about the people who wanted a BMW, but couldn't afford it?
And how about Satanists who want everything red? - jhails, on 04/25/2009, -1/+19GM has no choice but to reduce the number of models. Its too bad that GM's poor management didn't anticipate this problem years ago but that would have required executives to do their jobs instead of playing golf and checking their bonus plans.
They need to focus on a few models and do those well. Trucks, a sport car namely the vette, 2 or 3 small runabout urban cars and 2 or 3 full size sedans. I don't know what GM's involvement in military vehicles is but my guess is that might be a good area to keep active. - Spuy767, on 04/25/2009, -0/+18Considering I own a G8 GXP with a six speed, you're pretty much an idiot.
- marx2k, on 04/25/2009, -0/+18That's because most Buick owners die of old age before the car has a chance to get *****.
- reiner15, on 04/25/2009, -11/+26I think killing off Pontiac would be a big mistake. I have always enjoyed their features and looks.
- MattDell, on 04/25/2009, -0/+14The G8 is a sport sedan; it wasn't designed to be a fuel efficient commuter.
- KibibyteBrain, on 04/25/2009, -1/+15Are you insane? Chevy is their most valuable brand. If anything, they should redefine it.
- reichec, on 04/25/2009, -4/+18I know a lot of old people buy Buicks, but please, its the lamest brand out there... Pretty soon with this economy, the old farts wont have any cash to buy their Cadilacs and Buicks and it will be the young people supporting this industry. I wish they would get rid of BUICK instead of Pontiac.
- stk198323, on 04/25/2009, -2/+16I'm a gm fan but you got to be kidding with the G6! They made mistake after mistake with that car!
The ''sporty'' model having a worst engine then the regular one, the convertible having less hp (and no other motor optional) then other model, etc. - portnoy, on 04/25/2009, -1/+14I'll never forget my '69 "Goat". That car could all but fly and one time it literally did, for about 20 feet.
- freehunter, on 04/25/2009, -2/+15Well, there is a difference between brands, albeit a small one. Pontiacs tend to have slightly beefier engines and more experimental luxuries (standard wall outlets in place of cigarette lighters, etc). I know for the trucks, there is the Chevy Cheyenne W/T, which is the no frills, no comfort, no luxury work truck (i own one), the Silverado, which is your standard truck, and the GMC Sierra, which is the high-luxury model. Kind of odd thing to think about, GMC being the luxury brand, when their motto is "we are professional grade".
Pontiac should still be doing what they were started to do: make affordable sporty cars. Not just copying Chevy's designs with another 50hp. At any rate, you are correct, Shut down the me too brands. - randyzaia, on 04/25/2009, -2/+15buick deserves the axe too
- mleaman, on 04/25/2009, -1/+13The Aztek is reason enough!
- nicktheawesome, on 04/25/2009, -1/+12Buick is fantastically popular in China, where the brand outsells the US counterpart.
- notaku, on 04/25/2009, -0/+11had my 2000 gp for 5 years now. its kicking the bucket (no drive gear anymore after 160,000km ftw!)
thinking about the G8, can't wait to see the liquidation discounts :) - Anand999, on 04/25/2009, -0/+11The G8 by all accounts is a great car (in GT and GXP forms anyway...). I really hope GM finds a way to get it into one of the remaining brands. Everything else in the Pontiac lineup can DIAF.
- smacksaw, on 04/25/2009, -1/+12The G6 was designed for age 30+ women without children.
Case closed. - inactive, on 04/25/2009, -1/+12They should kill off Buick not Pontiac. I love my '98 Trans Am =(
- Treason, on 04/25/2009, -4/+15(P)oor (O)ld (N)egro (T)hinks (I)ts (A) (C)addy
- inactive, on 04/25/2009, -0/+11Hahaha, you got it. There is a reason they gave them away on Oprah to introduce the model.
- ibeetle, on 04/25/2009, -0/+10This is almost certainly true. In the past 6 months all three Pontiac dealers in my area have closed. One was a Pontiac/Saturn/GMC. It did reopened (two months later). When it did Pontiac was MIA.
- aceuk, on 04/25/2009, -1/+11Cutting down on the different brands is the right thing to do to become profitable. Why not have all models come under the GM brand (with NO sub-brands) and make the options list bigger for each model? The money is in the options.
- ibeetle, on 04/25/2009, -1/+11My mother bought new in '73 a Grad Prix. That was one of the last great muscle cars. Sure, it only got 15 miles to the gallon, but ***** that thing was fast and it was not just fast the handling was just incredible.
Too bad they will be less likely remembered for those cars and more remembered for the Aztec and Fiero. - inactive, on 04/25/2009, -0/+10Chevy is synonymous with GM. That would be the equivalent of Apple getting rid of the Mac.
- Drazzim12, on 04/25/2009, -0/+9What would old people drive if Buicks went away. They would end up wandering the streets aimlessly.
- cowsgonemadd3, on 04/25/2009, -0/+9Somebody will buy Pontiac and make it probably. I mean I hear the G8 is a good car so somebody should make it.
- cowsgonemadd3, on 04/25/2009, -0/+9In short just up and get rid of Mercury because the whole Ford clones is dumb.
- Spuy767, on 04/25/2009, -0/+9My G8 GXP has a 6 speed, so I must have a special one-off or something.
- Zanarkand, on 04/25/2009, -0/+9There is no reason why GM has to carry so many brands. I don't know who ever thought it was a good idea to carry so many brands with the same identical cars in each line. They need to keep only Chevy, Cadillac, and Buick. They can fill any consumer need with those three brands. I know they want to keep people's jobs but business is business. If they get rid of those other brands then the sales will go up for the brands they choose to keep. Instead of spreading resources so thin between all those brands, they can focus on marketing just those 3 that actually sell.
- inactive, on 04/25/2009, -0/+8I never understood the business model of having several different brands especially two different brands that sell the exact same vehicles (GMC and Chevy).
- joelito, on 04/25/2009, -1/+9Build to go really fast on a really straight line!
- Taiyoryu, on 04/25/2009, -0/+8Pontiac Solstice = Saturn Sky
