- Pattyo13, on 06/23/2009, -2/+472010 Taurus SHO anyone? http://www.autoblog.com/2009/02/11/officially-offi ...
365 hp and an expected 25+ mpg - timpoke8, on 06/24/2009, -2/+35I'm really rooting for Ford. I have literally no understanding of the auto industry. But I know that Ford was having a lot of trouble in the early 2000s when GM and Chrysler were doing alright. And now the economy goes down and Ford is the only one of the big three afloat. In my uninformed opinion Alan Mulally must be doing a hell of a job. Someone please correct me if I am totally off base with this assessment.
- Pattyo13, on 06/23/2009, -3/+27they tried that. it was the "Five Hundred" for a couple of years and they sold terribly. they renamed it it the Taurus (a comfortable, familiar, recognizable name) and sales immediately picked back up
- shutaro, on 06/23/2009, -0/+19That doesn't look like Robocop's car. =(
- rizzo2008, on 06/24/2009, -1/+19Its called the Ford Mondeo and has been sold in Europe for years...sell it here
- hydroplane, on 06/24/2009, -1/+12Now there's an American car that has exactly what we're looking for! Taurus! Taurus for us!
- evilesttoast, on 06/24/2009, -1/+11Ford did not take a bailout package, so I will support them all the way.
- bloodhound01, on 06/24/2009, -2/+11A taurus is the most reliable car I've ever seen.
My buddy had one of those for YEARS and drove it into the ground without having to do practically anything to it. - walruspanzer, on 06/24/2009, -0/+9Ford didn't receive bailout money so if I were buying another American car it would probably be a ford. Glad to see the Taurus back.
- DarkShroud, on 06/23/2009, -1/+10Hell yes that is tempting. Having to decide between that and the Fusion Hybrid.
- Egg333, on 06/24/2009, -2/+10I think Weekend Update said it best when they said the Taurus was a way for middle-aged men everywhere to show that they've given up on life.
- Dynamoo, on 06/24/2009, -1/+9To the other commenters.. the new Taurus is NOT the same as the Mondeo. It's a few inches bigger, and the equivalent of the Mondeo in the US is the Fusion.
The Mondeo is an absolutely cracking car in most respects, and easily one of the most accomplished cars on the European market even when up against rivals like BMW. The problem is that it has always been seen as a company car, so few private buyers will go out and get a new one.
To be fair, GM raised its game in Europe before it gave up and sold the company too. The new GM (Opel / Vauxhall) Insignia is also a fantastic car, but like the Mondeo it is a company car.. however previous Mondeo models were also very good, not so for GM.
Chrysler still sucks though. - inactive, on 06/24/2009, -2/+9Yeah and "coca cola"? What's that all about? Pick a new name, you guys have been using that one for like a hundred years!
- sweetwater88, on 06/24/2009, -0/+6That's the SHO version. Which is only $200 dollars more than the original 1989 version (after you adjust for inflation).
The regular Taurus starts at $27K which is about average price for a full-sized sedan. - gtluke, on 06/24/2009, -0/+5Ford was experimenting with names for this size car, Mulally thought that was dumb so he made them switch it back to Taurus.
Whatever, it's just a name. - inactive, on 06/24/2009, -4/+9I have already reserved my new 2010 Taurus SHO at my local autodealer, my car will be delivered on August 1st. Can't wait, I love the SHO as I already have one, a 1992 V6 SHO.
- Darksoul, on 06/24/2009, -3/+8My parents still have their 93 Taurus sitting int he garage the car still runs like a champ, then again my parents take care of their vehicles as to I.
- bdbr, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4So it will fail because it is exactly what everyone is buying? That makes no sense.
- sweetwater88, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4Ford Fusion and Ford Mondeo are set to merge into one car by 2012. It takes time to build cars and the Mondeo as designed and planned pre-new ceo.
- DarkShroud, on 06/24/2009, -4/+8This thing beats Audis. But that would require you to read the article and then do research.
- RegalBegal, on 06/24/2009, -2/+6In the 80s the Taurus was actually quite popular and design-wise very 'hip'.
- cuervoman914, on 06/24/2009, -1/+5nope, hes doing all this, mind you, without a floating device. the company is keeping afloat, and investors and employees should feel pretty good about themselves and the company. that's half the batle.
- HCProgramr, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4Nah...the Taurus was more the Civic of realistic-sized sedans.
Cheap, ubiquitous, reliable for the most part, a great starter car or runaround vehicle for someone that didn't need to make a statement...the only thing it had that the Civic (from the same era) didn't was enough room for 4 adults taller than 5'8". It was perfect for people that already had their toy and wanted something more practical for daily driving.
And agreed with DarkShroud: The SHO is a monster. - aspec, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4You can have one if you want. All you need is about five hundred bucks and a bunch of flat black spray paint.
- zip000, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3Huh. I never realized that. I remember seeing those Ford Five Hundreds...they were the first car that I'd seen from Ford - in my range - that looked pretty good.
- swanny89, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3Branding is hugely important. Maybe not as much for something as pricey as a car, but having a name that people recognize and feel comfortable with is very, very important.
- MyTakes, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3Does Ford think Conan made the Taurus hip?
- tnoy, on 06/24/2009, -1/+4If its popular, then it sucks, right?
- ProfessorLX, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3my cousin used to rock her Taurus wagon with the letters
CLI
before taurus.. truck drivers and perv's loved it. - netant, on 06/25/2009, -1/+4I don't know of a single ADULT who still cares about looking "cool". In GROWNUPland, being "cool" is similiar to being called a developmentally stunted, immature fad consumer.
And that's why you "kids" don't understand what the appeal of the "Taurus". Its for old America that wants certain features (size, comfort, look) and be totally conformal. The Taurus is a Republican car. - BinaryFragger, on 06/24/2009, -1/+4What stigma? The Taurus was a huge success for Ford when it first came out in the 80s.
- Bennuendo, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3That actually looks really nice.. good amount of power, decent mpg... not bad at all!
- sweetwater88, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3It's a nice car but overall this is a stepping stone into Ford's One Ford plan. Large sedans are low volume sales but the new Taurus reinforces Ford's commitment to bring modern, well-equipped, fuel-efficient, world-class cars. This car completes with the Toyota Avalon and Audi A8/6.
Granted we don't get the Ford Mondeo, but the new Fusion is nice, and extremely reliable (not a single recall since it was introduced, compare that to the camry). And not to mention that the Mondeo and Fusion are merging into one car by 2012. Also, the Fusion will eventually be built in the US as it moves it's small cars operation into Mexico. And the third gen Focus will be introduced at the same time here in the US and in Europe. Plus, we're getting two all-electric cars as well. - rdldr1, on 06/24/2009, -2/+5I believe in the Ford ClitTaurus.
- edstate, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3It's kindof like the Malibu: the public hated it, due to horrible branding and historical perception. But they actually made it a great car over time.
What they should do is just call it something else, and jettison the legacy brand baggage.
After all, a PTCruiser is essentially a Dodge Neon with a different shell. It's all about marketing, baby.
/I hate the PT Cruiser btw. - sweetwater88, on 06/24/2009, -0/+2The Mazda6 platform was co-developed by Ford using Ford's capital. Same thing with the Fiesta/Mazda 3, Ford paid for it but Mazda gets first dibs.
Mazda and Ford are buttbuddies. - netant, on 06/25/2009, -1/+3Nah, you guys don't know your history. Ford's CEO is not a genius, and Ford is not a successful car company. The reason why they seem to be in better shape now during the Great Recession, was that they nearly went bankrupt a few years before the Great Financial *****. Ford, its that low point, had to clean up its act sooner. Their CEO is NEW (and thus unproven). Its sheer coincidence they're doing "well" now. They merely had less debt and more cash/loans in reserve, so they didn't "need" a bailout.
- Kate1240, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2I was thinking the same thing!
- StBucky, on 06/24/2009, -0/+2It was, a few days ago.
- pagno, on 06/24/2009, -0/+2The silhouette reminds me of a Saturn.
- bdbr, on 06/24/2009, -1/+3Its not Ford asking the question, its this stupid reporter. He's disparaging this vehicle not for any of its features, but simply because its named "Taurus".
- cuervoman914, on 06/24/2009, -0/+2how is someone gonna digg me down for saying im a VW fan? lol, weird.
- bdbr, on 06/24/2009, -0/+2Yeah, but look at the highway and see what everyone's driving - 4 door sedans. Mostly from Japanese companies, because they were the only ones that made them (and the US manufacturers had a stint of bad quality that has only been resolved in the past few years).
- bdbr, on 06/24/2009, -0/+2That does look really nice! I was thinking the 2010 Buick LaCrosse would be my next car (never thought I'd buy a Buick but that thing is sleek), but I'm glad there's competition.
I know a lot of people want to punish GM for taking government loans, but I don't get the logic of wanting the companies that you loan money to fail. I'll buy a quality car from them or Ford if they'll make one. It looks like they both will. I'm glad to see the American car companies putting out good cars. It took them long enough. - ivansusanin, on 06/24/2009, -0/+2are trying
- phoenixgtr, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2"the equivalent of the Mondeo in the US is the Fusion"
Uhm, no. The Fusion is based on the Mazda6's platform while the Mondeo is built on Volvo's platform - Orochiyagami, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2not to mention all wheel drive and rally suspension.... sounds like ford is trying to make a competitor for the wrx and ralliart hopefully the suspension and curve Hp/tq is balanced, awd has been a staple for a good while now, at least with rally and time attack class cars.... but best luck to them at least they are progressing a little and that seems to be some nice tuning for a stock car ^_^
- topcat5, on 06/24/2009, -1/+3You should learn to read. Never said anything was wrong with the 3.0 engine.
- erkokite, on 06/24/2009, -1/+3Are you paid by Ford?
- BionicPimp, on 06/24/2009, -0/+2The Ford Fusion is based off of the Mazda 6 platform and manufactured in Mexico.
