- kp998, on 04/08/2009, -1/+21Nice but not at $30K.
- cmallinson, on 04/08/2009, -0/+7not at all - check out some of his other comments.
- leprix, on 04/08/2009, -0/+6Been driving a MINI for 6 months and it is a great car (you can spend under $20k on one if you want). Sturdy, well-built, and well-engineered. They aren't the fastest cars on the road, but they handle like a dream, and with 40+ mpg highway, I'm not going to complain.
- blackinthmiddle, on 04/08/2009, -1/+6I fell in love with this car after watching it in the Italian Job. The practical side of me said no way when I saw in parked in Manhattan behind a UPS truck. In a head on/rear end collision, a truck's bumper will definitely meet the mini's windshield. Not good, if you value your head!
- wannaBdug, on 04/07/2009, -3/+8Very cute car
- Bhatch514, on 04/08/2009, -0/+4I drive a 2007 Mini Cooper S hard top. It is the ultimate city car, fast pickup , stiff compliant BMW suspension with the sports suspension but very little boddy roll. I get 8L/100 km or less and i like to drive it pretty hard. Just orderd some KONI yellows for it and JCW springs.
It is our only car and i never wanted more space, with the seats down and a roof rack for my bike and gear is all we need now. - skellener, on 04/08/2009, -0/+4Non-convertible S version might be my next car. Drove my brother's around and it was a lot of fun.
- Adgeman, on 04/08/2009, -0/+4gheyest comment ever?
- Dynamoo, on 04/08/2009, -0/+3It's nice.. and the Mini is a well-built car that's fun to drive. The problem is that (in the UK at least) there are a LOT of Minis about. Really, an awful lot. If you're spending that much money then you might want something a little more distinctive.
I had to laugh at the bit in the article where it mentions that the roof can be retracted at up to 18mph. Woo! My car has a Targa roof which can be opened and shut at any speed you like. - kazoomaloo, on 04/08/2009, -0/+3Minis are great, great city cars - compact size, great fuel mileage, and high style. They take premium gas, though, so the fuel economy savings is mitigated some and the convertible isn't nearly as practical as the hardtop, but I think they're handsome, fun little cars. However I'm poor so the Honda Fit gets even more points... similar fuel economy on regular gas & super practicality with the rearrangeable interior at a price well under $20k. Huzzah for small cars!
- borez, on 04/08/2009, -0/+3Great now we have to look at all the ***** estate agents too
/A London joke. - DredPir8Robrts, on 04/08/2009, -1/+4I've never heard somebody bash a Mini who has actually driven one (especially the Cooper S).
- inactive, on 04/08/2009, -0/+2LOL I LOVE UNITED KINDOM JOKES TELLL ME MOAR
- fattsoo, on 04/08/2009, -0/+2This car was definitly very fun to drive. It's not super fast, but the car turns on a dime, very responsive. The thing I am disappointed about the car is the fact that it is not that small. It is a lot bigger compared to the old original mini (which i also own). But overall, I would rate it an 7/10.
- axisnate02, on 04/08/2009, -1/+3for ~$16-18k you can get a one-year used VW GTI which gets the same gas mileage, has a lot more power and torque, has more space, isn't British, and is better looking. I looked at the Cooper S, the RSX Type-S, and the GTI before making my choice, glad i went with the GTI.
- fprintf, on 04/08/2009, -0/+2You don't want to mess with success. I have a 2003 Mini Cooper S and this is the first time that I have owned a 6 year old car and not gotten sick of it for one reason or another.
- MarkusX, on 04/08/2009, -4/+6Although I'm glad they continue the tradition of the MINI Cooper, as a fan, I doubt they can ever match the ORIGINAL MINI Cooper, before BMW took over. That car was lighter, smaller and had more interior room, because it wasn't packed with all the safety features a modern BMW requires. Although it was small, it was the swiftest and fiercest car I ever drove, considering it wasn't a real race car nor tuned in any way. The new one is still a very nice car, but it can't yet live up to the legend. ;-)
- Bhatch514, on 04/08/2009, -0/+2the mark 2 is the same weight with more power then the first gen...alot more.
The base S is faster then the 9k JCW upgrade on the Mark1
and if your taking about the hay day MINI from Austin and such....well it would fail all safety standard today in Canada and US, which is why you only see old chassis on the road (with b18c VTEC motors in it :P)
You Want "fiercest" get a Supercharged LT5 in a Datsun 240z...mine was awesome. - JackpotCity, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2I agreee that 30k is too much, that said it's a cute car that's fun to drive like it's stolen.
- joegibes, on 04/08/2009, -0/+2Good, if you don't hit trucks.
- seanof, on 04/08/2009, -0/+2It's one of the lightest cars you can get in the US.
- juice22, on 04/08/2009, -0/+2Okay. I know I'm gonna get buried, but how the hell does an MSN first drive article make it to the Digg front page? The car has been out for a little while now. I know its the new 2nd gen model for the the US, but is it that newsworthy?
Mini's are great cars, I almost bought a Cooper S last year (went for a GTI instead), but I'm shocked that this article made it to the front page. Now that I have vented, I'm sure I'll get get mine for posting this. - MaxxusFlamus, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2Fiesta is also an incredible car. Have you seen the interior? Leaps and bounds over anything ford has right now, and maybe even toyotas.
It's a sin that they took so long to bring it to the US. - joegibes, on 04/08/2009, -0/+2Read anything about the Ford Fiesta yet? Jalopnik liked it quite a bit... Might be the first good American small car in a while.
- fprintf, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1The S version is definitely a fun car. When it came out in 2002 there was very little that could touch it in terms of fun and good handling. Coming from a Miata we were completely impressed by how quick it was. However for the money nowadays you can get some really very nice vehicles for the close to $30K asking price. We are hanging onto ours, especially since the pre-2004 cars had stiffer suspension and marginally better handling (if a bit harsher). Just think, for $30K you can get a Subaru STi or one of those souped up Evos. Sure they don't handle anything like the Mini, but they are a blast to drive too!
- Schralpy, on 04/08/2009, -1/+2drool...
- reggplant, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1In what way? The new MINI is one of the most popular cars on the roads around here in the UK. Theres still loads of potential in the MINI.
- joegibes, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1Keep lots of extra targa tops in your garage? lol
- ausfahrt, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1Ya its rad, but I'm surprised they haven't had more of a re - design. The thing has looked almost identical since it came out. I don't mind cause i like it, but car companies usually mix it up more. Although it is European, and they usually stick to designs for longer than Domestic companies.
- aceuk, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1The new VW Scirocco is a fantastic car if you want something distinctive. There aren't many of them about in the UK and they certainly turn heads. This is what I got after I sold my Mini One and I love it. :-)
I definitely agree about there being too many Mini's (especially near Oxford, where I live). - whatit, on 04/08/2009, -1/+2Truly revolutionary.
- skellener, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1Nice.
- ThatGeek, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1MINI is the cash cow for bmw right now
- jbmcb, on 04/09/2009, -0/+1The mini is fun for me to drive, until I wedge myself in one and my knees are halfway up the steering wheel. If I'm going cram myself into a car that small, I might as well buy a secondhand Caterham 7 and have some real fun driving...
- skellener, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1Fair enough. I'm looking at both the MINI and GTI.
- borez, on 04/09/2009, -0/+1I see your sarcasm, but:

In London ***** everywhere, like cockroaches, but full of property *****. - kenvsryu, on 04/09/2009, -0/+1It's overpriced and overhyped. Let's bring the alfa mito to the US! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z62z8jl8Vlc&fea ...
- aceuk, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1MotoringFile is a FAR better site if you're looking for anything related to Mini's inc. the new convertible.
http://www.motoringfile.com/2009/03/16/mf-review-2 ... - Caralizer, on 04/09/2009, -0/+0Since the release of the Mini I have been a big fan of this automobile. They are slick and unique looking and have some get up and go if you choose to opt for the S model. Also there are a wide arrange of mods available for these mini's as well.
- jbmcb, on 04/09/2009, -1/+1> It's a sin that they took so long to bring it to the US.
You can't make money on compacts, there's no margin unless you import parts from places where they are dirt cheap to make, which makes just-in-time production nearly impossible. Even then the margins are razor-thin.
If you are a car company hemorrhaging money, starting a line of cars that will be sitting in dealer parking lots when the price of oil collapses just isn't prudent business practice.
Now, when you have to make your CAFE spread to sell profitable Mustangs and Explorers, that's another story... - ILoveBoobies, on 04/08/2009, -6/+4Love my Mini Cooper S Convertible!!!
- HondaCBR600, on 04/08/2009, -6/+2I think they are living backwards, it's time to let the Mini go. Lets move on BMW!
