- zjbird, on 02/10/2009, -0/+35Science has gone too far...
- trafficlight, on 02/10/2009, -0/+21I didn't know the whole rear end came off. That's insane.
(Also, that's what she said.) - cadmiumpaint, on 02/10/2009, -1/+17i once took my Ferrari apart and couldn't put it back together. Well i was 8 and it was a remote controlled car, but i guess its the same basic idea.
- finalcloud33, on 02/10/2009, -0/+16That was a massive let down......
- mcwattersm, on 02/10/2009, -1/+17Why not just film a Ferrari being put together and watch it in reverse....
- unclefire, on 02/10/2009, -0/+10Title is misleading. These guys were doing a repair job and I'm sure didn't RIP it apart. I don't believe the "tear down" part either. They just removed the back end bit. I'm sure it'll go back together once they replace the clutch and repair the leak.
Anybody else notice how "dirty" the engine block was. I would have figured such a beast would have an engine clean enough to eat off off -- I guess the leak would contribute to such "dirtyness" - TheAutoInsider, on 05/22/2009, -1/+11This Ferrari worked its ass off.

- maximilen, on 02/10/2009, -4/+13I assume they're compiling a Haynes manual along the way, right? Probably the best $20 an F50 owner will ever spend.
- asoap69, on 02/10/2009, -0/+9It looks like some people here need an explanation. This car does not have a sub frame, and it hasn't been torn down. Ferraris are notorious for needing repair work. They are not cheap to maintain, they are designed to go fast not for reliability. A common need is to replace the clutch, which is what is going on here. As I said the car doesn't have a sub frame, the engine and transmission ARE the frame, just like a modern race car. You need to open up the transmission to get at the clutch, and as the trani is the chassis you get these photos. You can see that the suspension is attached right to the transmission along with body pannels and other bits. Also in the photos you can see the sway bar which is setup very similar to a race car.
Excuse me....

- IIECONII, on 02/10/2009, -1/+9You think Ferrari, a very niche market, is going to make a deconstruction manual for the F50?
And lose the $1000 oil change? - FearisFailure, on 02/10/2009, -0/+7I think I just shed a tear
- jebus123, on 02/10/2009, -0/+7It's just regular maintenance. Many easy things to fix require engine out on a Ferrari.
- sirico, on 02/10/2009, -2/+9funded by zonda
- handler, on 02/10/2009, -0/+7Those tires are crazy wide.
- Slovenian6474, on 02/10/2009, -1/+6FTA "Though all was not perfect as there was an apparent oil leak and a need for a new clutch"
Now what in the world would you be doing with a F50 that would need a clutch replaced!
I'm guessing this owner has been having a lot of fun. - Bermygoon, on 02/10/2009, -0/+5Only 349 cars were made, one fewer than Ferrari estimated they could sell. This was, in the words of Ferrari spokesman Antonio Ghini, because "Ferraris are something cultural, a monument. They must be hard to find, so we will produce one less car than the market." The last F50 was produced in Maranello, Italy in July 1997.
- A little wikipedia trivia for ya! - koinek, on 02/10/2009, -1/+6I'm going to cry. Why would anyone do that to such a nice car?
- UKsHaDoW, on 02/10/2009, -0/+5Or just bad driver grinding the clutch.
There's also a good head on shot of the clutch in those pictures. - danny25, on 02/10/2009, -1/+6No wonder Ferraris split in half when they're in a bad wreck. Looks like they're made to do that relatively easily.
- S2000, on 02/10/2009, -0/+5Pagani. Zonda is just the name of the car.
- MikeCI, on 02/10/2009, -0/+4I'm not really a car guy, but I'm curious how a car in general, and the F50 in particular, can be 'misunderstood'.
- imnojezus, on 02/10/2009, -0/+4I really hope I never hear anyone say that in the "that's what she said" context.
- Jektal, on 02/10/2009, -0/+4Basic repairs, it looks like...
- vilago, on 02/10/2009, -0/+4ducati
- Bense, on 02/10/2009, -0/+4Because we all know that clutches ONLY wear out from abuse right?
And cars only need their brakes changed if you're doing stunt driving.
Tires only need to be changed if you're doing burnouts.
And gas is only used when racing right? - MrMcSnackSack, on 02/10/2009, -0/+4Relax guys its just a routine clutch replacement and oil change. A ferrari is usually torn down like this... this is no honda civic with catback exhaust. This is a real race car. The engine and transmission support the whole vehicle... hell they are the vehicle. It would drive just the same without all the red fiberglass which is pretty much just there for aesthetics. oh someone already said this.... then damn that's a shame!
- Corpiscator, on 02/10/2009, -0/+4Stretch Ferraris, new niche.
- stinkybinky, on 02/10/2009, -0/+4so... do you always just read the comments FTA and post them here looking for diggs?
- inactive, on 02/10/2009, -1/+4If only they would rip apart more things in the name of science this world would be a more interesting place.
- Smokeydabear, on 02/10/2009, -0/+3Unless it doesn't explain how to do something, which they often don't. You find directions for something and it just says "remove part" and it doesn't explain what the best possible way.
- bazik, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2in name of science? i'm sure the guys who projected and built it already know its insides.. just a tought
- imnojezus, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2Seriously though, it's almost like the rear suspension and transmission is floating outside of the frame. I'm not really sure how...
- protogenxl, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2Are they going to put it in the back of a crappy sail boat that they found on a beach?
- javy925, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2http://jalopnik.com/5134128/tearing-down-the-engin ...

...../drool - UKsHaDoW, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2Looks like a subframe, but it specifically says they don't have subframes.
- bundwallah, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2You still wouldn't get a date. :)
- inactive, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2"That's science gone mad innit" -Karl Pilkington.
- Gnar04, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2i know i know, but at least it wasnt an f40
- jebus123, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2To all the people crying, you need to realize that they are just servicing the car. A lot of routine things require the engine to come out on many models of Ferrari. And when it's out, then the mechanic says: Well, while it's out, we should do this too and that too.
- feliks2, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2I'm feeling rather angry at GranTurismo right now.
- AlienMushroom, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2CZJ 2532
- Gnar04, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2when i read the title, i screamed in my head "NOOOOOOOOOOO!"
- MaLLiii, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2"We've invented most of the stuff that we need and now we're just messing about" :D
Karl is the best - drgreenberg, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2Not only isn't this a teardown, as others have discussed, but a real teardown to see how something works isn't science but engineering. The two are too often confused. Science is a method of learning new information about the natural world. It's neither about applying existing knowledge to building a machine nor about one individual who happens not to know some specific thing finding out how that thing works even though the workings are already known to the community in general.
- feliks2, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2I used to take my model Porche and Ferrari appart all the time. Good times.
- Indydad, on 02/16/2009, -0/+1So sad...
- rothgar, on 02/11/2009, -0/+1Crazy mad scientists!!
