- xsidekick409, on 01/14/2008, -0/+8What does it matter if they made a car that runs off of ethanol and gas? Ethanol is a terrible solution to our problem. It takes a tremendous amount of corn to produce a small amount of ethanol. We don't have anywhere near enough corn to quench our needs. The more ethanol we create from corn, the less corn we have available for other markets, driving up the price of nearly everything else.
- pjkli, on 01/14/2008, -0/+3That's exactly what I was thinking. If they use E85 then the mpg will go down. It takes twice the ethanol to operate an internal combustion engine as opposed to gasoline.
- vawksel, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2wtf
- drgooch, on 01/25/2008, -1/+3Yeah, I'm going to put Corn in my $200k Ferrari.
- Chirp08, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2I != care
- Chirp08, on 01/14/2008, -1/+3The power gain comes from the higher octane rating of e85, like alcohol its harder to burn then gasoline, it would be similar to running 105 or so octane in your regular car. This allows them to run a higher compression since it won't as easily ping, I'd expect no less then 11:1 comp in that car, and with computer controlled timing you can really push it. More compression lets you run more cam, which means more air/fuel, which is more power.
- matu4251, on 01/14/2008, -1/+3I'm with you, nothing green in using ethanol. This "solution" is worst that the problem it's supposed to solve.
- bankhead, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1The 2008 Audi R8 V12 TDI Concept looks far nicer IMO than this Ferrari, and also it already passes European(much stricter) emissions standards likely to take effect in 2014.

- winmywii, on 01/14/2008, -1/+2The gas powered 430 gets 13 mpg city / 17 mpg hwy . Which isn't good, but it is not that bad. Now compare that to the new corvette @ 600hp gets 22mpg and is about 1/2 the cost (but for some reason people still talk about the push rods being obsolete).
- novanator, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1so starts the benevolent future of green performance cars.
- KayinNasaki, on 01/14/2008, -1/+2Fun Fact! The World's poor aren't going hungry because theres a food shortage! They're going hungry because they have no money, no infustructure and generally no way to be self reliant. Besides, what do you expect to send them, tons upon tons of sugar? Don't be a god damned retard.
- floridiot2, on 01/14/2008, -3/+4I want to have sex with it... dragon style.
- noghead, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1Formula One is going "green" in a few years. With this, you can expect more hybrid related technology to trickle down to road cars; even in high performance super cars. One technology that I am excited to see is recycled energy: when a car brakes, it uses that energy to drive the car later.
- winmywii, on 01/14/2008, -1/+2That was the best Jalopnik post ever. Dragons having sex with cars.
- kidcodea, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1there is nothing bio about this fuel when indonesia is destroying virgin forest and wildlife the size of Wales per year, and the size of 300 football stadiums per hour!!?! to plant for oil plants...
morons buy into this fanatism for the green without actually knowing they are just enriching the same old smart people who drive them through fear campaigns. - olaph, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1i love the look of the car..now if only i could afford it!
- winmywii, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1The whole point is that people can't get past the fact that GM uses "old technology" in push rods, yet is pushing the bar for mileage and power.
- Ninnux, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1@xsidekick409 :: Actually, you're assuming the old paradigm. They've just completed large-scale tests on switchgrass and determined a net energy ratio of something like 1:4 and published it in PNAS. That's WAAAYYY better than corn. Search PUBMED with PMID: 18180449
- slapded, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1I saw a 2008 FERRARI 612 SCAGLIETTI the other day on i-295 in richmond. It blew by me at about 120
- stupidcabbage, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1It's the nature of pushrod engines that for a given power output (hp) they will have more torque, rev lower, and have a larger displacement than an OHC engine of the same or similar power.
So, Audi has a DOHC 4.2L V8 in the S4 that revs to, what, 7000 RPM at 340 hp with 302 ft-lbs. GM has the LS1 which in the '04 Pontiac GTO put out 350 hp at 5200 rpm and 365 ft-lbs, with a displacement of 5.7L. The GM engine gets much better mileage too (29 vs 23 highway for those 2 cars).
The pushrod engines are also more compact and cheaper to build than an OHC engine of the same power. - floridiot2, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1Or pooping on the toilet lid.
- ElbertF, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1http://thatotherpaper.com/files/dragonsandcars02_t ...
- Ninnux, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1Sorry, I was wrong in my previous post. Switchgrass yields a net energy ratio of 5.4 units of energy for every unit invested. That's freakin' awesome.
- Refrag, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1You're missing the point. This isn't primarily about being environmentally conscious by reducing our dependency on oil (although, it could do that), it isn't about increasing MPG, it's about increasing the power output of the engine. Lotus produced an E85 concept of the Exige a while ago and it has a nice performance increase over a normal petrol Exige with only ECU alterations
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lotus_Exige#Exige_265 ...
PS -- Corn isn't the only bio-source used to make ethanol. - billbugger, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1now let's say we can get that ethanol from a source other then corn that has the potential to produce a 540% energy output above the amount of energy it takes to produce the ethanol. Does that sound like something you would be interested in? ... They have been able to accomplish this with a grass that naturally occures in the midwest. Doe released a study on this recently and has a grant available to get this into production
- MrMongoose, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1I seriously doubt they changed anything other than the calibration on the engine computer, or else they would have gained more than 10hp.
- ultralights, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1bio fuel = deforestation
- bathenry07, on 01/14/2008, -0/+0Aweosome car, looks great
- musclecars69, on 01/14/2008, -0/+0that car does look pimp.
- shaundee, on 01/14/2008, -0/+0zzzzz phew.. huh? huh? concept car.. zzzzzzz phew
- MrMongoose, on 01/14/2008, -0/+0The 6th gear on American V8's is specifically designed to allow the car to cruise at an ideal engine speed for lower gas consumption. This means that these cars are essentially 5-speeds, with a 6th 'overdrive' gear. Foreign cars typically have true 6-speed transmissions, meaning each gear is useable to accelerate the vehicle. This is one reason for the better gas mileage. Knowing that your car will be cruising at a given RPM range allows you to fine tune that range to run as lean as possible without potential damage. Doesn't really have anything to do with pushrods.
- EnergyRoom, on 01/14/2008, -0/+0Give me a 2007 R-6 and I'll blow the roof off your new clean energy ride. Tire's weren't made to squeal so that you are using a corn husk to drip-dry starch-oil into the carb and get output like the wheelbarrow I had to push when I was planting seeds when I was 12 years old.
Ozone problems = bad and we should try to fix.
American muscle rides = good and we should ride them as fast as we can
Energy. - abran1984, on 01/14/2008, -2/+1That car is the hotness...
- vawksel, on 01/14/2008, -2/+1I agree the new vette is fast. It has a severe image problem though from its american heritage... but hey the whole world hates america, so that's probably not going away soon (thanks bush, woo vote ron paul).
Anyways, back on the subject. I agree with you completely, the other car manufactures have something to learn from american engines (not much to learn from the rest of the car though). How do american engines with huge displacements and older techniques output more horsepower and get better gas mileage at lower RPM's than their foreign counterparts? - rarson, on 01/14/2008, -3/+2I don't understand how they propose fuel economy went down. Alcohol requires more fuel than gasoline because its stoichiometric ratio is lower. Awesome car though.
- skyshock1, on 01/14/2008, -2/+1From 5 MPG to 5.1 MPG! AWESOME!
- 1807, on 01/14/2008, -3/+1Reminds me of a joke...what kind of nuts does a dragon have? Dragon balls! *Insert laughter*
- ThePerkins, on 01/14/2008, -3/+1I could see Ron Paul driving one of those things into the sunset. Maybe with "Freebird" playing on the stereo. Ooops I'm getting hard.
- CarzorStelatis, on 01/14/2008, -5/+3Oh goody, the world's poor get to go hungry so that Ferraris get 2% more power.
- xdvx, on 01/14/2008, -4/+2Engine looks pretty good
- waynne, on 01/14/2008, -4/+1Nice car - a ride which salves the conscience! (if only by 5%!)
- bimtott, on 01/14/2008, -4/+1What's the likelihood that the 15% gas mix in a ferrari still equates to the gas consumption in a compact car? Hmm...
- showblogger, on 01/14/2008, -5/+0the good post for Ferrari.
