- diulei, on 06/08/2009, -1/+73If we're going to throw billions of taxpayer dollars at failing / failed companies... why not some companies like Tesla who innovate!??!
- sexybobo, on 06/08/2009, -1/+33nice until your car ices over and you cant open your door because you handle slid in.
- TJ11240, on 06/08/2009, -0/+30The more I learn about this car the more I want one
- NoozeHound, on 06/08/2009, -1/+28Have a right-hand drive version in the grey delivered for me to test.
Has anyone seen a Tesla actually on the road? Anywhere?
Really hoping the 2009 Roadster will make it into Top Gear - and work, wonderfully. - rheaume, on 06/08/2009, -1/+24Can somebody actually start making vehicles like this on a massive scale or are we going to see prototypes and renders for the rest of our lives...
- vikingboy, on 06/08/2009, -0/+19The Model S will have an anticipated base price of $57,400. After a federal tax credit of $7,500, the effective price will be $49,900. Because of tax incentives and relatively inexpensive maintenance and refueling, the lifetime ownership cost will be closer to cars with far lower sticker prices.
- mwtapp, on 10/11/2009, -1/+20That's one efficient vehicle.
- davecachia, on 06/08/2009, -2/+21Really like how the door handles slide in. So much innovation in 1 car. Can't wait for them to be mass produced.
- GraceHead, on 06/08/2009, -1/+17WANT
- miggyb, on 06/08/2009, -1/+16If GM bought Tesla, they'd bury it in a cabinet somewhere.
- cheesylobster, on 06/08/2009, -0/+12I love the big screen in the middle of the console along with the idea of changeable skins for it.
- mrfish, on 06/08/2009, -0/+11...TO SPEAK AT NORMAL LEVELS OR CASE
- diulei, on 06/08/2009, -0/+10I saw a Tesla this weekend picking up a friend at LAX. That's the first and only I've ever seen.
- JordanTW90, on 06/08/2009, -17/+26Telsa > GM and Chrysler
Freemarket > Socialism - OrlyonokEaglet, on 06/08/2009, -0/+8Very nice, but wow, it looks a lot like an Aston Martin or even Jaguar XF. That's all good, those are some classy cars obviously :-)
Just seems the current trend for 4 door coupes really took this form and everyone is copying it. - TJ11240, on 06/08/2009, -1/+9Do some research before posting.
http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/19/tesla-model-s-w ... - BottledViolence, on 06/08/2009, -1/+7Electrics are getting better, but how does that 300 mile range translate in the winter? Some people actually need to drive their car in the cold and snow.
- r4dius, on 06/08/2009, -0/+6Their website says 50 grand
- 4degrees, on 06/08/2009, -0/+6this company is where the auto bailout money SHOULD be going.
- OrlyonokEaglet, on 06/08/2009, -0/+6Nah, it's really a huge difference between powering an electronic gadget and moving a car! :)
For example, to use a cell phone for about 6 hours continuously you need just 1 battery.
To drive a car for 200 miles you need 5000+ of these batteries (that's how many the Tesla Roadster has and it has a range of 200 miles). - sexybobo, on 06/08/2009, -1/+7the problem is not a lot of people want to buy $100k cars. What they are mainly working on now is bringing down the price so they can start mass production
- jeffbw, on 06/08/2009, -0/+6I believe the model s is set for $50k. Should go down from there if it catches on.
- jasdf, on 06/08/2009, -0/+6If I remember correctly, their next model is supposed to be exactly what you described. They are starting at the top and working their way down so they don't release a high volume product with tons of defects.
- bobartig, on 06/08/2009, -0/+5From the Tesla Blog, apparently charging when cold is a concern, but capacity seems to be ok:
1) What if my father (who lives in Minnesota) wanted a Tesla and wanted to drive it in the winter? It often gets down to -20 °F (-28°C) and colder there. Would he be out of luck?
—
Editor’s response: The battery pack will need to be plugged in and heated before use if it has become cold-soaked to below -20C. However, in many cases even if the outside temperature drops somewhat below -20C the battery will still be warmer because of the thermal insulation and large thermal mass. It is the battery temperature that matters not the outside air temperature.
3) If I just left my Tesla “turned-off” and sitting outside in Death Valley in the summer, would the compressor kick-in to keep the battery cool? If so, could I trash my battery by leaving it in the desert and unplugged for several days (until the battery A/C has used all the charge and the batteries got cooked?) I could imagine this happening, say, at the Phoenix Airport parking lot.
—
Editor’s response: Right now we are not planning on running the compressor if the car is not plugged in for exactly the reason that you mention. However, this does mean that parking the Tesla Roadster in the Phoenix Airport parking lot for a long period of time is not the best idea, since it will reduce the battery capacity more rapidly than either a cooler parking spot or a parking spot where you could remain plugged in and temperature regulating. - erossmu, on 06/09/2009, -0/+5*Corporatism
- MOJIRA, on 06/08/2009, -0/+5If I have the money to buy a gas powered car in the range of $30,000 in the near future, I'll consider the Tesla Model S first. Until then I'm pimpin' a '97 Accord with no ABS and a clickity CV joint.
- jeffbw, on 06/08/2009, -0/+5As TJ pointed out, Model S is set for under $50k.
http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/19/tesla-model-s-w ... - jasdf, on 06/08/2009, -0/+5WANT!
- whatever01, on 06/08/2009, -0/+5You want to be green? Get a tune up. That'll help most $1500 cars a lot.
- Wheelingdude86, on 06/08/2009, -0/+5I'd drive that. Would you?
- phosphor112, on 06/08/2009, -0/+5Seems like someone never heard of the EV1.
- fooljoe, on 06/09/2009, -0/+5*have tesla buy abandoned gm plants, retool and ramp up production
- phosphor112, on 06/08/2009, -0/+5Damn right, he said 300 miles!? That's probably with all gizmo's and doodads off, but that sure beats the ***** 40 miles that the Volt gets.
Oh wait, it has a battery extension. Yeah, well the Tesla doesn't have an extension and it gets more than 3 times that amount if you were to included the extender.
/rant
Anyway, that Tesla is sexy as hell. I would really want one. - Zgradis, on 06/08/2009, -0/+4Ok ok, I didn't get my jet pack like they promised, I didn't get a trip to the moon, hell I didn't even get my flying car... I suppose this will have to do! :D I am excited for the future! Anyone else?
- lichter86, on 06/08/2009, -0/+4That interior touchscreen is huge. I really want to sit down and play with it to see how effective it is. Love the innovation.
- mizusajt, on 06/09/2009, -0/+4His voice is so comforting. I'm buying.
- iamacyborg, on 06/09/2009, -0/+4An American manufacturing company that makes a product people actually want? What trickery is this?
- GIScope, on 06/08/2009, -0/+3I haven't bought my first car yet so what a dream would be to have that as my first car and start green at the same occasion!
btw where the heck are part 2 and 3 of that same video?!
PS:I will probably start with a stinky loud $1500 gas car - TurboSquid, on 06/08/2009, -0/+3Now THAT is a sexy car!
- inactive, on 06/19/2009, -0/+3The bottom of the car is not exposed like in conventional vehicles. So all of the sensitive electronics will be unaffected by the salt.
- inactive, on 06/08/2009, -0/+3Now that is a chick-magnet!
- ronintetsuro, on 06/08/2009, -0/+3He didn't mention the handle heaters. Optional, of course.
- iamacyborg, on 06/09/2009, -1/+4you mean like the DOES NOT EXIST GM volt?
Yeah my imaginary car gets 100,000,000 miles on a single AA battery, is made entirely out of recycled toilet paper and cost $8.95 to produce. - cannuk, on 06/08/2009, -0/+3You are right, I always wait till I come to a full and complete stop to change the speed or temperature of the air conditioning. You are an idiot.
- iamacyborg, on 06/09/2009, -0/+3I'm sure it pops out when the car is stationary.
- Enchorito, on 06/09/2009, -0/+3Maybe pedestrians should stay off the streets, use crosswalk signals, and look both ways before crossing the street? Maybe drivers should pay attention to foot traffic in cities?
Quiet cars are not the problem. Careless pedestrians and drivers are the problem. - modifiedbears, on 06/08/2009, -0/+3"more or less"
Less
"The Roadster shares less than 10% of its components with the Lotus Elise; shared components are confined to the windshield, air bags, tires, some dashboard parts, and suspension components."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tesla_Roadster - strykefive, on 06/08/2009, -1/+4Id love to get one. But 50 grand is a bit much for me. (Okay a its a lot for me).
I'll wait for the price to go down a bit. - mu0p, on 06/08/2009, -0/+3I thought the same thing, aston/jag combined with a little bit of the new a3 tail-lights in the back
