Creative Advertising: BMW Canada Sets Vice Magazine Aglow
mediaincanada.com — BMW has found a way to sneak an ad onto the cover of the April issue of Vice magazine. At first glance, it looks like any other cover. But when the lights go out, a glow-in-the-dark ad for the BMW 1 Series appears, with the 1 appearing where the "i" in Vice usually does.

- ApolloXLII, on 03/25/2008, -3/+2Cool and all, but I still can't afford one.
- LeCollectif, on 03/25/2008, -8/+2Vice readers can barely afford their own cigarettes, never mind a BMW. I think the concept's sort of weak, too. Nothing that creative happening here.
- Crazytree, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1in reality, most Vice readers are spoiled brats who can nag their parents for enough money for a shiny new "toy".
- LoungeActx, on 03/25/2008, -4/+1They did it here in America with Paste magazine I believe. Although they bleached the cover white and gray so the tie in was slightly different.
- surKaz, on 03/25/2008, -5/+1MY feelings on it... "Cool..Eh, It's Alright.."
- falkonv7l, on 03/25/2008, -1/+15I love BMW, and the fact that they don't really need traditional advertising.
- 00Skypilot, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2heh, BMW is definitely using all the traditional advertising media around here. But I dugg ya up because you are right they don't need it.
- picosan, on 03/25/2008, -0/+5I hate when they use 'submit to digg' links when the site can't handle that *****...
- HanSolo69, on 03/25/2008, -0/+3Yea, BMW also just raped the latest issue of Paste magazine. every page number is some some little fact about BMW. "Pg. 32 inches of leg room."
- xtremesniper, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2Hahah that would actually be pretty funny to see.
- fludgesickles, on 03/25/2008, -0/+7...isn't that the "pr0n$tar" Sasha Grey?
wondering if they really did get the rights to use her picture?
BMW + Pr0n = heaven- fludgesickles, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1her myspace

- Zer01, on 03/25/2008, -0/+9In other news, BMW just sneaked an ad into a digg article. Man, I'm cynical.
- tikal2k, on 03/25/2008, -1/+0There is about as much chance of your typical VICE demographic buying a new BMW as you are of finding someone driving to the soup kitchen in a Jaguar to get a bite to eat.
- mrhedges, on 03/25/2008, -0/+0You forget about the spoiled ones who want their daddies to buy them Bimmers so they can impress their friends. I'm sure the low end 1 series (115i?) will be significantly cheaper than the 3 series. I, on the other hand, really want a 135.
- TheHayze, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1It's the 128i, and it starts at 28kish. The 135i starts at over 34k. Affter loading on a package or two, nav system, keyless entry, and a few other options, it's almost as much as a 3 series. I would have liked to see the 1 series be a more of a 20k car (to compete with the Jetta, and maybe one of the lowest Benz models) But alas, with BMW "style" they jacked the price up.
- mrhedges, on 03/28/2008, -0/+0Yeah, but it's almost as much as a 328i. The 135i has the same twin-turbo V6 as the 335i, but it's a lighter car. If I had the choice between a 135i and a 328i, I'd pick the 135i without hesitation. I do agree with you though, in regards to having a car to compete more with the every-day. Instead they made a car that's pretty much in a class of itself.

- csw1342, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1"the 135i is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine that produces 300 horsepower (220 kW) and 300 ft·lbf (410 N·m) of torque from 1,400 rpm." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_1_Series
I want it.

- Akraz, on 03/25/2008, -2/+3Who reads a magazine with the lights off......
- jackorilla, on 03/25/2008, -2/+2Vice is a magazine by people who understand advertising and its value, but also understand the need to have an advertising interaction with the content and keep seeding the content with the advertising messages. It's epic'ly latr'd series, which is brilliant, is just a long commercial for shoes, boards and branded riders. They give you some eye candy, but always the products are well represented.
- ineptsavant, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2that settles it. I saw a glow in the dark picture of a bmw, now I just have to buy one!* looks in bank account* oh damn I seem to be a little short.
- Hosalabad, on 03/25/2008, -3/+3Right, because BMW intercepted the copy going to the publishing house and made them change the cover to use a glow in the dark ink.
They didn't sneak *****, they paid for it, buried for inaccuracy. - trolley, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1This is a bit weird...I've been reading Vice for years but it never struck me as the type of magazine that potential BMW buyers would read. Then again, maybe I'm just bitter because I can't afford one... :(
- Cutrush, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1Nice placement of headlights ;D
- ninjaface, on 03/25/2008, -1/+3I'm pretty sure that is SASHA GREY. That's awesome... Yummy
- fludgesickles, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1haha yes it is - my 1st thought
- archivist, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1just an opinion but... it could have been better if the advertisement somehow interacted with the cover when it's on glow mode.
- KillerLettuce, on 03/25/2008, -0/+3YAY! the 1 series is coming.
- TheHayze, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1The 1 Series is already out... the 125i is 27k starting, and the 135i is just over 30k. The convertibles JUST came out for about 2k above the starting price for both models. www.bmwusa.com if you don't believe me. D: It's been out for a few months now...
/end bmw advertising. I swear guys, I'm totally not working for bmw. D:

- Compserd, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2Very clever, But I don't think those "hipsters" can afford a BMW anyway.
- nutniqs, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2Vice is a cool mag, and sasha grey hardcore porn star is a funny choice to collude with BMW.
