- holyskeleton, on 07/13/2009, -2/+39News: Chinese buys more cars
Reaction: OMFG WE ARE ALL GONNA DIE!!!!1! - bpwrinn, on 07/13/2009, -2/+31I hate it when people say, "WAKE UP PEOPLE" and follow it with facts that aren't really shocking at all.
- duggtodeath, on 07/12/2009, -9/+36Too bad every car is made of lead :(
- Arsenard, on 07/12/2009, -6/+31Wake up people!! In <20 years China's economy will dominate the world, just like the U.S.A. did once!
- inactive, on 07/13/2009, -3/+23The military-paranoid comment of the day, courtesy of digg.
- Praystation, on 07/13/2009, -5/+22Yeah..but their cars are still pretty *****.
- novenator, on 07/12/2009, -10/+26The American industrial base has been decimated and China's is growing exponentially. New reality folks: the world is changing and our military might will no longer be able to win a protracted war should one ever come.
- TheJimid, on 07/12/2009, -0/+16Over the past few years you had to see this coming.
- mfc5200, on 07/13/2009, -2/+17
The American LOW TECH industrial base is no longer what it once was. This is a good thing assuming it comes about naturally (i.e. salaries in those industries don't justify their existence in the U.S.A)
For my research work, EVERY time we have to get a high tech component custom manufactured, there are only 3 countries that seem to have the ability to produce them: USA, Germany, and Japan. Every custom component has been from one of those countries.
The fact of the matter is that the U.S. is still the worlds largest manufacturer of goods on a dollar basis (high cost, lower relative volume)
-----
What I think most people forget to be honest is this. After WWII, standard manufacturing WAS the highest tech endeavor a country could engage in. The rest of the world was still building everything by hand instead of using machinery. GM was the Google and Microsoft of the 50's.
Today however, those industries are old and are no longer on the cutting edge, hence they don't garner the same premiums and profit margins as they use to. This explains why a man could work for GM after high school and live a very nice lifestyle while single handedly supporting 1 wife and 2+ kids.
Today however, the modern equivalent of GM is a company like Yahoo, Google, IBM, Intel. And if you notice, single working people working for those companies still can afford to raise a family on their own if need be given their salaries, $70,000 + right out of college.
It is all about supply and demand. The older an industry, the less profitable is becomes as more and more competition develops.
The American Industrial base has not been decimated, it has evolved. And to be honest, I'd be surprised if the world ever sees another WWII style "protracted war" between major powers. Not because I'm an idealist, but more because if either side actually thought they were going to lose, they would just nuke the crap out of the other. Weapons keep becoming more and more deadly while our bodies remain as fragile as ever, you can do the math from there. - akchrs, on 07/13/2009, -4/+19I like Chinese food.
- swmbuk, on 07/12/2009, -2/+15IMO The more educated the Chinese get the more ***** the government there is going to be.
- scotchyscotch, on 07/12/2009, -2/+12China will be a prime example of fully concentrated capitalism. There really isn't any sort of ethical barrier there or standards, which is why you have all of the contaminants in some of the imports we get. No soubt they will be the new world super power, they have the infrastructure, the right economic modality, and a fierce militaristic society to carry it out without missing a beat.
- redxii, on 07/13/2009, -0/+9= higher oil and gas prices for the rest of us.
- ZenMojo, on 07/13/2009, -0/+9Interestingly enough, the gas...unleaded.
- Bloodwine, on 07/13/2009, -1/+10I like American Chinese food. I haven't tried authentic mainland Chinese food, though.
However, if it is anything like American Mexican food vs. the authentic Mexican food you get in Mexico, my taste buds prefer the Americanized foods. - bdbr, on 07/13/2009, -1/+9Actually its speculation. China might just rise like that, but it also has real problems to deal with, including growth that depends on a declining resource (oil) and whether the rest of the world can stay rich enough to keep buying their products, serious environmental issues, reliance on violent crackdowns as a way to keep the population in line, and as many poor people as the entire US population.
- inactive, on 07/13/2009, -3/+11ORLY?
- Bloodwine, on 07/13/2009, -1/+9So now we're going to pay the piper for all those dumbasses who offshore, outsource, and use foreign, cheap labor.
Pretty much everybody sees the writing on the wall. All these countries we have build our things are either going to turn around and buy us out (see Lenovo) or steal all our designs and whatnot to use to build their own plans. In time they'll get the hang of it and their inferior knock-off products suddenly become on par or superior to our own.
I'd call the PHB with MBA's who done all this to us a bunch of short-sighted idiots, but chances are they met their short term financial goals and are living better than me now. - inactive, on 07/13/2009, -5/+12am I? the US wasted over 1 trillion dollars on Iraq. That's 1 Trillion dollars that could have been used to save California, or give everyone free health care, or free college education, or fix US crumbling infrastructure. who's the idiot now?
- damian001, on 07/13/2009, -0/+7I think your grammar died with MJ.
- X9001, on 07/13/2009, -0/+6I doubt it, China's economy is based solely on producing goods and keeping its currency deflated(so that its cheaper to buy from them.) So their success is relative to the success of other countries
- marx2k, on 07/13/2009, -0/+6Yeah that was ridicurous.
- TheGuruStud, on 07/13/2009, -0/+6Rofl, even if the US had zero defense against the chinese invading the mainland, how exactly are they going to control a landmass of this size? There's a literal 1 billion hiding spots that scream guerrilla warfare and the chinese would be defeated.
Simple physics and history. Why do people even bother posting such idiotic claims.
Just trolls, I guess. - CrazyChair, on 07/13/2009, -0/+6The Japanese on the other hand...
- ChinaLumberjack, on 07/13/2009, -1/+7Misconception.
The Chinese have no problem pronouncing "L"s and "R"s. - Cockslap, on 07/13/2009, -0/+5So you like panda express pretty much.....
- Megadeth222, on 07/13/2009, -0/+5I hate when people say "WAKE UP PEOPLE".....NO, IM ***** SLEEPING LEAVE ME ALONE
- BossKey, on 07/13/2009, -0/+5@ngresonance - What makes you think they won't?
There was a time when products from Japan, and then Hong Kong, were thought to be cheap and inferior. Then it was Korea. That all changed.
Too many people in this thread think that things will always be as they are. But China makes all of your favorite gadgets and is starting to build airliners using technology they learned when we outsourced to them. There is no reason why China can't gain a foothold in autos, since they already gained a foothold in, here's an example, every other product you have in your American home. - KittensRunAmok, on 07/13/2009, -0/+4In other news... America suddenly becomes interested in the environment and stuff, banning the import of cars containing lead.
- solid12345, on 07/13/2009, -0/+4mrzack3, one could argue that, whether the war was right or wrong, if Iraq becomes a free democratic Republic and an ally of the US it will pay for itself in the long run in terms of regional interests much like making Germany and Japan our ally after WW2 did.
As for saving California, well i'm all for sending tanks in to liberate that country from dictator Pelosi and her crony teacher's unions and corrupt LA city council men too! - rehkcts, on 07/13/2009, -2/+6Is it something to celebrate that you're buying the most cars? I think the environment misses their bikes.
- inactive, on 07/13/2009, -0/+4The Romans fell and so did the British... do not worry my friend...
- damian001, on 07/13/2009, -3/+6I don't know why your comment was buried. It's pretty much true. There was an article here on digg not too long ago that shows the crash tests of Chinese cars. They were horrible.
- vinnyvenus, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3But they have over 1 billion people. We probably still own more car per capita.
- Ferretman, on 07/13/2009, -4/+7China's roads aren't all that good...where the heck are they all driving TO?
- BotchaMcCoola, on 07/13/2009, -1/+4What sarcasm?
- inactive, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3they can't sell Chinese cars in the USA because they are death traps
- DarkShroud, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3Which is why their Government controls education. radio, & TV and limits their internet.
- inactive, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3What makes you think they will get a foothold?
- sndream, on 07/13/2009, -1/+4http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lB0araA0T_k
Look the same. - murrdpirate, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3Their cars may be ***** right now, but they are just now entering the industry...you can't expect them to instantly come out with top of the line vehicles. Japanese cars used to suck too, it takes time to develop advanced automotive producers.
- inactive, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2The net global impact will be quite negative, though.
- hardtoconfuse, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2Check out some Chinese car crash tests on youtube. Theres rarely more than a roll of pennies left.
- 2Deluxe, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2Burried for incorrect spelling and use of 'Darwin awards'.
- brim4brim, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2This.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bh5dHnsdcm0 - inactive, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2If skyrocketing prices for oil and every raw material used in car manufacturing is tasty to you....
- AmusedToDeath, on 07/13/2009, -4/+6As an owner of several Ford trucks, I heartily disagree.
- inactive, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2Porn has been banned in China for a long .
- universalK, on 07/13/2009, -3/+5K, I am Chinese, and I have to say, What sort of tard country is building a MASSIVE gas car infrastructure a couple decades before the demise of oil? Building a industrial infrastructure and the relevant military/foreign policy infrastructure is no better than fighting the Iraq war. Only Chinese people are too dumb to realize.
So, let China take the lead and the Dawin award. -
