- LemonDefragger, on 07/14/2008, -5/+48Honestly, I can't wait for the time cars drive themselves. Most traffic is caused by just one idiot who slows down to see some accident on the other side of the road or brakes way too much.
- PhillyMJS, on 07/15/2008, -0/+39Yeah, yeah, yeah... autonomous cars, flying cars, WinFS, Duke Nukem Forever, and The Year of the Linux Desktop... they're all "just around the corner." Riiiiiiiiiight.
- h4mx0r, on 07/15/2008, -1/+29YOU ARE EXPERIENCING AN ACCIDENT. YOU ARE EXPERIENCING AN ACCIDENT.
- AlaskaLoneWolf, on 07/14/2008, -3/+26It will definitely change some things, for instance, we won't need traffic police, you would be able to drink and drive safely, cab drivers would be unemployed, and the idiot that doesn't understand the concept of turning right on red would be a thing of the past...
- maoglone, on 07/15/2008, -1/+23Wait 'til your car drives your wife to your girlfriend's house... awkward.
- EatChex89, on 07/14/2008, -8/+26I like driving; please don't give it away to the computers.
- shortyjacobs, on 07/15/2008, -0/+16THE HELL I AM!!!!
- inactive, on 07/15/2008, -3/+18Or the judicial system. "Good morning, John. According to IRS records, it appears that you did not pay your taxes this year. Therefore, all doors have been locked and you are now being taken to your closest police station for questioning. Have a good day!"
- PabloIV, on 07/15/2008, -0/+12a self driving car with Sync would be like KITT's retarded cousin.
We could call it DURR... - EnderMB, on 07/15/2008, -1/+12As a CS student specialising in AI I can safely say that this article is *****. As far as the technology goes we're already there. There are yearly competitions involving autonomous cars managing to drive 100 miles down a motorway, though this is a lone venture with a passenger ready to take the controls at any given time, and is always done on relatively empty roads and without informing the authorities.
Simply put, we aren't even close to testing it on live traffic yet, so a car isn't going to drive itself on a public road any time soon. I'd say that on-board computers will soon make aspects of driving a lot easier in the near future, but it'll be a while till we're letting robots drive us around. - lndmn01, on 07/15/2008, -3/+13Try sex.
- tehbored, on 07/15/2008, -2/+12Why do people always insist that some ***** is going to hack some new technology and ***** everyone over? You don't see hackers steering planes into the ground, despite their systems being computerized. You don't see hackers launching missiles by hacking into the military's computers. What the hell makes you think that some hackers would be able to cause a nationwide gridlock by hacking into the computer systems of cars that drive themselves? I just want you to know that I hate you and everyone else who makes comments like yours.
- cdigioia, on 07/15/2008, -1/+11People also buy expensive cars to be seen in them - A little distasteful, but lots of people will still enjoy commuting in their Mercedes or whatever other high-profile brand is popular at the time.
- dvsbastard, on 07/15/2008, -0/+10"Hello, welcome to Johnny Cab. Please state your destination."
- shortyjacobs, on 07/14/2008, -2/+11Cars that drive themselves would be awesome, as long as you could drive it if you wanted to. Have traffic signals overrule you when you are in high congestion areas, so you don't hit your breaks and cause a jam, but when you are in low congestion areas, give the driver the choice of taking the wheel....
- earnjam, on 07/15/2008, -0/+8Yeah, but then he tried to sue the company saying they didn't tell him "cruise control" wasn't autopilot.
- inactive, on 07/15/2008, -4/+12All of the people on here who are complaining about this must be under 20. Driving is like shaving - it's cool when you first start, but it gets old - fast. After driving the same goddamn 40 miles to work and back every day for years I'd rather just sleep through it.
- earnjam, on 07/15/2008, -1/+8Just drive to Kansas, throw on cruise control and stick The Club on your steering wheel. Those roads are so long and straight that you could take a nap if you knew the car wouldn't veer off.
- o0dhacker0o, on 07/15/2008, -1/+8In the 50's we said flying cars by the millennium...and laugh at it.
Fast forward 50 years to this article...and laugh at it. - chrissku, on 07/15/2008, -1/+8----- --- ----- Hello Michael ---- ----- -------
- DeFex, on 07/15/2008, -0/+7some guy tried that he turned on cruise control went in the back of his Winnebago to make a sandwich, apparently it did not end well.
- foofightrs777, on 07/15/2008, -0/+6A teenage boy who hacked into a Polish tram system used it like "a giant train set", causing chaos and derailing four vehicles.
The 14-year-old, described by his teachers as a model pupil and an electronics "genius", adapted a television remote control so it could change track points in the city of Lodz.

The boy, described as a 'genius'and some of the equipment he used
Twelve people were injured in one derailment, and the boy is suspected of having been involved in several similar incidents.
The teenager, who was not named by police, told them he had changed the points for a prank.

- MarshalBanana, on 07/14/2008, -7/+13I, for one, welcome our autonomous vehicular masters
- NWScreative, on 07/15/2008, -0/+6It would also do wonders for fuel economy;
think about how every time you're at a stoplight and it turns green, you can still end up waiting a long time before you even start to move if you're a couple of cars back. Autonomous vehicles could start simultaneously, reducing traffic and driving times, plus that extra time shaved off of the commute applied to the entire nation would translate to some significant fuel savings. - inphu510n, on 07/15/2008, -1/+7Maybe you shouldn't be commuting to work so far in the first place...
That can't be very soft on your wallet these days.
Besides. I'm nearly 30 and I still love driving. Cars are not A -> B machines for me. They are extensions of personality and ego.
I definitely have friends who feel completely otherwise.
And yes, I wouldn't mind taking a train to work if it didn't take an extra 2hrs out of my day. It would be great to be able to read or sleep on the commute home. - wibambau, on 07/15/2008, -1/+7Ahhh yes, time for a new Grey Poupon commercial!
- LightSpeed4, on 07/15/2008, -2/+7Im a car enthusiast, and theworm you couldnt be farther from the truth.
first, you act like everyone will be forced to buy a driverless car in the future. No, itll most likely be a choice.
next, people who buy expensive cars (not an entry level mercedes) usually have chaffuers driving them everywhere. - mtownand1, on 07/15/2008, -0/+5Anyone remember the beemer on Topgear that drove itself? It had to be taken around the course once, but after that it drove itself just like you would expect a beemer to drive itself... I think Jeremy almost had a heart attack.
- B3N3, on 07/15/2008, -0/+5I'd be happy just to have a car that fuels itself.
- baldr, on 07/15/2008, -3/+8what the hell?
- gs68, on 07/15/2008, -0/+5No backroads, no Highway 101, In-N-Out food stop only, Final Destination.
- faskippy, on 07/15/2008, -1/+5So, will this do away with DUI's?
- dist0rtedwave, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4Sure the technology is there to have cars drive themselves, we have had that for a while. We could set a car up on a closed course and have it navigate automatically without too much issue. We could even put a bunch of computer controlled vehicles on the road toghther without issue. The problem is there are all those people still driving on the road. We are still a long way off from computers being able to come close to interacting with human drivers, so short of a total replacement, this won't be happening for quite a while.
- Porch, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4They could do it now if they wanted to. All the car really needs to do is to handle the freeway. Little magnets in the road so it stays in the lane, and front and back facing radar. Just set off an alarm when it's time for the driver to take over. A child's toy could do as much today. I don't need in town driving and the complexity it brings. The freeway is just fine.
- DeFex, on 07/15/2008, -3/+7What a massive and idiotic waste of resources to have people in separate little boxes being driven about by machines.
- netneutrality, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4Like this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KGTZlh1Uaw :)
- TheWorm, on 07/14/2008, -9/+13This would take all the fun out of commuting in a car. People buy expensive cars because they enjoy driving them.
- TheSuperunknown, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4The comments in here are amazing. Fun is clearly far more important than safety.
- yoda17, on 07/15/2008, -0/+4This subject was my senior design project. I think we're pretty close (much closer than we were 10 years ago) with much fast computers.
The problem is not technological, but rather social, the biggest problem is who do you sue when your car fails and you run into somebody? This is a real and huge problem. The liabilities are prohibitive, especially in the US. Back when I was working on this problem, it was assumed that such a system would have to undergo a long period of acceptability before it ever came here.
Remember, the entire general aviation industry was nearly put out of business over one (very questionable) lawsuit. - shortyjacobs, on 07/15/2008, -1/+4lol wut?
take off the tinfoil hat man. - bittdude, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3I'm not sure the majority of the population is ready to put the trust of their lives into the hands of an automatic car.
- danibobanny, on 07/15/2008, -1/+4I would think that insurance companies wouldn't approve such a thing for a very long time, if ever. Sure, you could let your computer drive, but that would nullify your insurance coverage, hence no one would use it. I hope I'm wrong about that; I'd looove to catch an extra hour of sleep or read a book on the way to work.
Of course, if it did catch on, you'd see all manner of people getting dressed, brushing hair, brushing teeth, other assorted grooming habits, eating breakfast, getting freaky, and other things typically done at home or in private. The potential for hilarity to ensue is enormous. - TecK415, on 07/15/2008, -3/+6***** that *****. I don't even want to drive an automatic transmission, let alone a car that drives its self. I try to find at least some enjoyment out of getting from here to there. I also would feel powerless, putting my trust in a computer that will someday no doubt have a change in heart and try to kill me.
(I get abducted by UFOs* on a regular basis).

- inactive, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3 How long until taking off the auto drive feature is a crime?
- gothsquirrel, on 07/15/2008, -1/+4No, but your on the right track I'm going to go with traffic is caused by the 50% of people out there that are constantly trying to pass everyone thinking there actually going to get some where faster.
- inactive, on 07/15/2008, -2/+5Yeah, right along with flying cars. They'll be out by the year 2000.
Stupid. - cambob76, on 07/15/2008, -1/+4I think autonomous cars would be great. You could drink and drive, watch a movie or surf the net, get it on with your other, sleep!, the possibilities are endless. Do you really want to have to pay attention to the road for your 1-2 hour commute every day? Make auto pilot optional, like iRobot (sorry for mentioning that movie) but mandatory for lawbreakers and old people. Sooo many accidents would be avoided.
- nathanww, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3The thing is, what happens in the transition period, when some cars are autonomous and some human controlled? In that case, they wouldn't be able to rely on an ad-hoc radio network and have to use cameras, which are notorious in the robotics world for being slow and unreliable
