- caution, on 04/03/2009, -3/+12sports cars aren't about 0-60 times or 1/4 mile times or e-peen HP numbers, they're about carving up the curves for "sport" and many of the most-popular sports cars didn't have all that much HP
it's about handling.... (see maita, mr2, s2000, lotus elise, etc.....) - HOWLAN, on 04/03/2009, -0/+7The VW looks pretty freakin nice.
- L8blumR, on 04/03/2009, -1/+6Hybrids are not sustainable...and really not all that green. To buy into hybrid technology is to hang on to petroleum's impact on our economy. What a waste of mental and financial energy to even produce these things! Bio-diesel is the way to go -- use current infrastructure, stop paying oil and farming subsidies. No dead batteries to landfill...no more petro...real sustainability.

- 4321234, on 04/03/2009, -0/+4Actually a 4000 lb car needs more than double the horsepower of a 2000 lb car to have the same acceleration.
- Greengoo, on 04/03/2009, -1/+4My first car was a 1987 Toyota MR2. It weighted all of 30 pounds. It could just SCREAM when you opened it up. I made that thing go faster than is even remotely intelligent.
- leif777, on 04/03/2009, -0/+3I like that Roadster.
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -2/+5well if it weighed half the weight of a 300hp car then they would be somewhat even...
- ThsGuyRightHere, on 04/03/2009, -0/+3Show me an affordable convertible hybrid that seats 4 and I'm all over it.
- Arbinshire, on 04/03/2009, -1/+4Wish I could digg you up further. Sports cars are Lotus 7, Austin Healeys, Bug Eye Sprites, Mr2 (first gen mostly), Miatas, etc. These cars are more about handling, finesse, light-weight and limited features. They're totally not about the horsepower.
Mustangs, Camaro's, Corvettes, etc are more GT cars. There is a distinction. Some cars do blur that distinction a bit, but there are usually distinctive differences between the types. - fandyllic, on 04/03/2009, -0/+3But its a Ford Fiesta! Did you not read the "Sports Car" part of the topic?
- brad3378, on 04/04/2009, -0/+2Diesel Engines cost much more because they have more expensive components.
The engine blocks have to be much stronger because cylinder pressures are much more extreme.
Diesels run at a compression ratio of about 25:1 while gasoline engines only run at roughly 8 or 9:1
Cylinder pressures in diesels run at about 25,000 PSI.
Fuel pressures in diesels run at about 30,000 PSI. Expect to pay $1000+ just for a fuel pump! - moosejaw99, on 04/03/2009, -2/+4#1. Design a Green Sports Car
#2. End War in Iraq.
#3. Fix Economy
#4. Get a tugjob.
Ahh Priorities. - scallon, on 04/02/2009, -0/+2Yes this is all true. Euro diesels get phenomenal gas mileage, yada yada yada. Have you ever looked into how freaking expensive they are? "Way high" doesn't quite do it justice. The base Accord diesel sedan in England is $33,000. Here the base accord (gas) is $20,000. Who the hell is going to pay 13k more for a base sedan? No one. That is why they are not sold here. The cost of living between here and Europe is very different and that difference makes selling diesel cars in the states impractical.
- Wag3Slav3, on 04/03/2009, -4/+6And they all look super ugly and "hybridy" just like all the "not sporty" hybrids. Make a car that doesn't look like a modded port-a-san for FSM's sake!
- inactive, on 04/02/2009, -3/+5MR-2 Hybrid? That would be so awesome they need to seriously revive that car
- WasabiBomb, on 04/03/2009, -0/+2The 90s called, they want their joke back.
- 93ex, on 04/03/2009, -0/+2Or you convert any cellulose crop into bio-diesel...whatever.

- Zenith251, on 04/03/2009, -1/+3Have you ever driven a Toyota MR2? It's a purpose built sports car, through and through.
Light weight, mid engined, rear wheel drive, compact, low slung little buggers with relatively sporty engines--what more could you possibly want from a sports car?
Also, these gentlemen would like a word with you out back, behind the dumpster:

Any questions? - KJSatz, on 04/03/2009, -0/+2I didn't know the CRZ was going to have a manual option. I thought Honda had said they'd stopped making hybrids with manuals because people would wear out the battery flooring it and shifting at 2000rpm....
- thefox84, on 04/03/2009, -1/+2The VW is the car to get... It's absolutely beautiful. I mean I would prefer to have the venerable 2.0t to give it some serious oomph over mileage, but I see where VW wants to go with the car. Bring it to the US, and I'll be waiting in line.
- fandyllic, on 04/03/2009, -0/+1For a hybrid a manual shift would also be really bad for the gas mileage which somewhat defeats the purpose of a hybrid in first place.
Honda also hasn't been real good at making CVTs, so maybe they figure they'll just not have one. - Taiyoryu, on 04/03/2009, -0/+1Or use algae
- fandyllic, on 04/03/2009, -0/+1Nice.
- Taiyoryu, on 04/03/2009, -0/+1Yes. Diesels are great. Biodiesels are green (assuming they ever perfect extraction from cellulosic or algae sources). Yet, electric motors in sports cars beat ICEs regardless of fuel source because of the torque curve. So sure, Ford Fiesta is sporty but as Fandyllic points out, it is not a sports car, even if and when the GT model comes out. And I like the Fiesta.

- stubear, on 04/03/2009, -1/+2I like the VW but once again it a an f'ing diesel. There are 12+ states that flat out do not allow private owners to have diesel vehicles and I happen to live in one of those backwater states (MA).
- acid_jazz, on 04/03/2009, -0/+1Your mom gave me an idling hummer.
- Valyn, on 04/03/2009, -0/+1I completely agree, but the problem is, we can't just switch over the entire nation like a switch. It has to evolve. Do I think the car companies are doing it right, or fast enough, NO... but it is not an easy thing to do.
- bodhibay, on 04/03/2009, -0/+1Makes me think of this > http://mr2.ytmnd.com/
- moose26, on 04/03/2009, -0/+1How is it that the diesel cars are tens of thousands more in Europe than gas versions, yet some get 60 mpg while gas only cars in the use get around 40 mpg if they are lucky. Does the diesel engine and transmission really cost that much more to build, enough to equal 50% of the cost of the gas version of the car? It sounds like if overnight everyone was driving 60 plus mpg compacts and other higher efficiency cars that those who hold stock in the oil industry, profit from gas stations would be seriously losing alot of money.
I am not surprised that diesel production is lowered to keep the prices higher. It keeps the oil companies profits higher.
Sooner or later thought green will be our only choice as the worlds supplies of oil are not infinite. - nicc, on 04/03/2009, -0/+1yet here in the US the diesel variety only costs about $1,500 more...
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -1/+2Example: 330HP 3300lbs 370Z putting up the same straight-line numbers as the 425HP 3850lbs Camaro SS.... and being 0.1g (huge) better on the lats.
- museamongmen, on 04/04/2009, -0/+1Sarcasm!
- scallon, on 04/05/2009, -0/+1they are both in the same unit of currency now, why would i convert it again the other way? So they were both in pounds? wtf is the point?
- Greengoo, on 04/03/2009, -0/+1My first car was an MR2 and I've wanted another one ever since
- thefox84, on 04/03/2009, -0/+1Oh sorry I meant the Turbo gas engine. TFSI I believe it's called.
- nicc, on 04/03/2009, -0/+1that VW has a 2.0T...TDI, the same engine that is in the Jetta TDI.
- nicc, on 04/03/2009, -0/+1those restrictions went away last year when VWs newest TDI engine passes all 50 states emission standards.
- Boofster, on 04/03/2009, -0/+1I don't understand why nobody has made a tiny hybrid coupe or hatchback yet.
Can't wait for the CR-Z. I'll definitely pick one up for a daily driver and keep my supercharged S2000 for special occasions. - Greengoo, on 04/03/2009, -0/+1Yah, I said weighted. Oops.
- sifab, on 04/02/2009, -2/+3Ford Fiesta diesel. Forget plug ins waste.
Ford has been selling this car over seas the past year but not in the US. It gets something like 60+ miles to the gallon. In a survey Wired ran out of 971 people 91% would buy one. Price is way high. You can buy two gas models for the price of the diesel. Less parts in a diesel. Claims of paying for technology. Come on. Something is wrong with that also not being able to get one in the US.I read A story about numbers in Wired. Something's not adding up. - hasslinthehoff, on 04/03/2009, -1/+1The Tesla Roadster called, it wants the story back.
- f00bar, on 04/03/2009, -1/+1Have you also converted the "base accord price"? I bet it's more expensive than the diesel.
- bucksbuster, on 04/04/2009, -0/+0Hey this is a cool article. Too bad DIGG has decided to make it too hard for you n me n everybody else to leave the diggasphere - notice your URLs as you click around - they don't leave the digg site unless you click on the very obscure link (practically grayed out !) - is Digg taking all the traffic & pageview counters? ugh...
