- chkdg8, on 04/11/2009, -1/+60That is completely awful and of course their one and only argument is always: "Well if you're not doing anything wrong then you shouldn't have to worry about it."
- inactive, on 04/11/2009, -0/+48this is in my area, i see them all the time.
Anyone got any bricks i can throw? - fabkebab, on 04/11/2009, -0/+42Playing with the radio? Who doesnt do this at some point in a car journey?
I guess if you are doing it while the car is actually moving maybe its a problem, then again, in the grand scheme of things maybe there are better things the police could be doing - RyeBrye, on 04/11/2009, -1/+37The UK loves video cameras turned on their citizenry. This much is for sure.
- westquote, on 04/11/2009, -0/+33I wonder how many accidents will be caused by being distracted by CCTV cars?
- ohreilly, on 04/11/2009, -1/+32I'm glad the government is funding such important schemes to ensure we don't fiddle with the radio, instead of spending our money on far more useful crimes.
- theskillwithin, on 04/11/2009, -1/+29What closely at CCTV in Britain Americans.
YOU ARE NEXT
I'm surprised they were even allowed to report this.
(P.S. if this is what they are concerned instead of higher crimes, then that is sad, watching hours and hours of people driving)
"if we are not committing a driving offense then we wont be looking into your vehicle" but they look into everyones with a camrea to find it, she just contradicted herself. - nomadxx7, on 04/11/2009, -0/+24Because they make rules that make everyone god damn person a ***** criminal. If you don't see that then shoot yourself. God I'm sick of this justification of ***** laws. Like what was said above, changing the damn radio now gets you filmed and a fine from it.
See the greater picture of liberties being ***** over because of concerns of crime. Like the UK banned guns, now you see people stabbing the hell out of each other. You see CCTV cameras everywhere to "catch the bad guys." Guess what the ***** bombers that blew up the train station still did it. Guess what the CCTVs did for the people. They have everlasting memories of the act not a way of stopping the act in progress.
When we give up a little liberty for a little security we deserve neither. I'd rather have an armed public willing to maintain order than ***** suits in Parliament or the Senate telling me how I'm going to be protected.
Honestly in all the years of this enhanced security do you honestly feel safer than you did before they had it? It's just ways to make money and ***** people over in the process.
God stupid comment piss me off. - Jeepinator, on 04/11/2009, -2/+23The people of Britain should speak up about this sort of thing. Oh wait, the government doesn't fear the people anymore because they have nothing to revolt with, so words mean nothing. Big Brother indeed.
- MarySunshine12, on 04/11/2009, -3/+23how totalitarian
- thelove, on 04/11/2009, -0/+19Really? Come on you have to draw the line somewhere. Is traffic violation this big of a deal in Manchester?
- smacksaw, on 04/11/2009, -1/+18All of these articles about the UK and what is happening is simply an admission that the place is out of control and gov't is snapping back by overreacting.
You Brits need to take your government and your society back. When fiction like V for Vendetta looks more and more plausible every year, it's time for deep introspection. Sack it up, UK. The facts are on your side. None of this ***** prevents accidents or crime. You know it, the gov't knows it. Even entertaining this debate with gov't about safety allows them to change the rules away from truth and into the realm of lawmaking, a place you cannot compete. You're on their turf. - MidnightFox, on 04/11/2009, -3/+20here is an idea. box the CCTV car in, handcuff the driver in his boxer shorts to a nearby lamp post, and rip down the car to it's very last nut n bolt. do that to enough of the damn cars and they will get the point.
- videodroner, on 04/11/2009, -0/+15What's next? A TV set that will watch YOU?
- inactive, on 04/11/2009, -0/+14"because it is not worth worrying about"
This kind of complacency is the beginning of the end for your liberty, I'm sorry to say. - inactive, on 04/11/2009, -1/+13Throwing a brick while driving might be a bit distracting, don't you think?
- sorenchr, on 04/11/2009, -1/+13Guy Fawkes Mask Production Co. sales projection for '09 just went through the roof.
- rolf, on 04/11/2009, -0/+12Some laws make trivial things "crimes".
- Frozo, on 04/11/2009, -5/+17This is a modern example of the same basic ***** that we kicked them out of America for.
- inactive, on 04/11/2009, -0/+11Don't touch that dial.
- inactive, on 04/11/2009, -7/+17It's funny how Britain used to be a huge empire only to collapse into a tiny island of fail whose population's only hobby is to live out the 1984 novel.
- Stryke, on 04/11/2009, -0/+10This is ***** ridiculous, really not happy with this idea at all.
As a UK resident i'm quite pissed that this is probably gonna go ahead around the country, I seriously hope general public will actually kick up a fuss about it... FOR ONCE.
How the ***** is this going to make a major difference to traffic accidents anyway? The only difference I can see will be the amount of fines issued. - rolf, on 04/11/2009, -0/+10They'll get you for assaulting a pig :(
(And no, these bottom feeders don't deserve to be called officers. To protect the bloated bureaucracy and serve themselves.) - mrdoubles, on 04/11/2009, -0/+9"1984"........ SO glad I don't live there anymore.
- nomadxx7, on 04/11/2009, -0/+9We speak this way because America is heading down the same path and we are unable or unwilling to take our government back also. Since we won't we'll cast stones across the pond to see if you guys do. I'm sure if Brits revolted that America wouldn't be that far behind. Seeing how we always compare ***** to each other it'd be like watching your big brother take on the bully so you know you can do the same.
HOWEVER, someone has to do something. Brits and Americans are getting to complacent already. - ohreilly, on 04/11/2009, -1/+10Yes, we love it. It's fantastic.
- danimator02, on 04/11/2009, -3/+12Wow. UK sucks.
- blackninja543, on 04/11/2009, -2/+11In Soviet Russia.... Car watches you!
- nomadxx7, on 04/11/2009, -1/+10I think they had a similar premise in V for Vendetta but instead of just filming people that had radio ears to pick up conversations (could happen so don't laugh). Then you can gauge public opinion by eavesdropping on their conversations.
It's all a form of control/complacency. If you don't revolt for the small stuff what makes you think you'll do so for the larger stuff.
It's just like the frog in a pot of boiling water. If it is boiling (***** hitting the fan big time) the frog will jump out (too much change at once). However if you do it slowly then he'll boil himself to death. Do you think as a fellow animal that we are any different. Slow changes lead to large changes over time. Just wait and see... - UK31337, on 04/11/2009, -0/+8*sigh*
England != UK
I'm Scottish and in a big Scottish city and the Big Brother mentality up here isn't too bad. There are a lot fewer cameras, we're not exposed to the arbitrary inner city terrorist bogeyman like the English are, we seem to have fewer speed cameras, lower taxes for the most part, perceived better education... for some reason, England is getting driven into the ground while Scotland gets the kid gloves. I'm not bragging, I find it extremely unfair and I know it's going to get better for us and worse for you if/when Scottish independence comes along.
The UK just loves taxing and victimising motorists. These cameras are just another way to do it, weren't illegally hidden speed cameras enough? - theskillwithin, on 04/11/2009, -1/+9no one plays with the radio (who drives).
that is a harsh term to make changing the station a crime. - bazzarr, on 04/11/2009, -0/+7As soon as you see one of these cars looking at you, start to masturbate furiously...
- Stavrosian, on 04/11/2009, -0/+7I agree that the best thing your family did is leave, but I think we have different perspectives on the matter.
- inactive, on 04/11/2009, -0/+7Dude, enough is enough. Do they realize you fight crime at the source with education, not by muffling its symptoms with fear?
Educated people usually don't get in unorganized crime (killing, stealing small money, raping, beating, speeding). It's the stupid, uneducated ones, almost exclusively.
My theory is that better education (different from schooling) leads to a better society, with no need for big brother. I guess I'm smarter and have more principles than the ones in power in the UK. Big ***** surprise... - theskillwithin, on 04/11/2009, -2/+9ahh, CCTV causes crime.
- fuzzymuzzy, on 04/11/2009, -0/+6In Soviet Russia maybe...
- Silverskater145, on 04/12/2009, -0/+6This ohreilly guy has spent the last hour replying to every comment.
Stfu already. We know your position on the topic, 40 replies back at the beginning. - JulyZerg, on 04/11/2009, -0/+6Well, there were telescreens in the canteen, at the monument to BB, and at Winston's job.
- govsucks, on 04/11/2009, -4/+10Dear government,
Please control whether I live or die, but don't look at me of listen to my phone calls or I will get mad.
Thanks,
a coddled citizen - BassMasterP, on 04/11/2009, -3/+9meh, what's new in the UK these days. You guys sure do like to be trampled on.
Said best by NIN:
Will you bite the hand that feeds you, or will you stay down on your knees? - ConfirmedCynic, on 04/11/2009, -0/+6Why aren't they targetting aggressive drivers (tailgaters, weavers, lane drifters and the like)?
- ohreilly, on 04/11/2009, -2/+7Why not?
The police forces in the UK have number plate recognition in their cars, to tell them immediately whether a car is insured, has valid road tax and is MOTed (roadworthiness test). I think this is completely accessible - if your car is not meant to be on the road, why shouldn't the police have the ability to check and remove it from the road.
Unless you're driving without insurance, that is. - Travelsonic, on 04/12/2009, -0/+5When you got nothing to hide... you are a liar, pure and simple.
- UKsHaDoW, on 04/11/2009, -1/+6I live britain, but also stayed in america quite a lot. They seem similar in CCTV camera's in the city's etc. I think a big part of it is terrorism threat, and it's just a knee jerk reaction. It's just that british media has picked it up quite a lot in britain, while in america the media ignore funny schemes like this. The police state stuff happens in america but it's less publicized. To be honest if it wasn't in media, I would hardly know it's going on. It does not effect my life in the least, which makes it lethal. I think in america the media hasn't mentioned it, so it's probably going on, you just don't know it yet.
Don't think your safe in america, it's just as bad in the city's. - inactive, on 04/12/2009, -0/+4nomad, you DO know that you don't have to consent to a search of your vehicle right? The officer can always pat you down "for his own safety" but your vehicle can't be searched without probable cause, i.e. something in plain view that is illegal.
Know your rights. - Jeepinator, on 04/12/2009, -0/+4You have the attitude that leads to exactly what I was referring to.
- NorthMass, on 04/12/2009, -0/+4The UK has lost its mind.
- UKsHaDoW, on 04/11/2009, -0/+4They have 1000 cameras in the new york subway system, and 3000 motion sensors. Thats just the subway system.
- 68024, on 04/12/2009, -0/+4Wouldn't that be the ultimate in reality tv... you can watch yourself watching yourself...
- nomadxx7, on 04/11/2009, -2/+6So stopping grampa from turning on the radio will lessen that?
I don't see how filming a dude switching radio stations actually stops crimes/accidents from happening. Please provide some logic to how this will help versus just a way to make money off the masses. -
