- digjam, on 10/11/2009, -4/+28Measure hybrids fuel efficiency in MPG is misleading.... since they use electricity to run the first few miles where they dont use gas at all. And if u dont even drive more than say 40 miles in case of Chevy Volt.. your fuel economy is infinite..since you havent reached a point where you started using gas.
In my opinion new unit should be MPJ..miles per joules...ie miles per energy spent. - Duggan360, on 10/11/2009, -2/+23Great concept, Now chop chop and stop wasting your time and focus on getting a car on the production line that gets 120mpg!
- JeffH, on 10/11/2009, -5/+23Cool. Except at 900 pounds even a Geo Metro could destroy this thing completely in a collision.
- pacman122, on 10/11/2009, -0/+17Misleading title. This is only a concept car.
- Averness, on 10/11/2009, -0/+12Not to mention every motorcycle ever built, but that isn't really the point is it?
- Lane, on 10/11/2009, -3/+15Finally A vehicle that shows I'm completely lacking in any hope of ever finding a girlfriend.

- inactive, on 10/11/2009, -0/+8Here's a guy whose never heard of a motorcycle
/madden - absurdist, on 10/11/2009, -1/+9If you think I look like a douche while I'm blowing by you getting 120 MPG, I can live with that.
If it irritates you, all the better. - ThanatosST, on 10/11/2009, -2/+9Yeah, the big ***** semi-trucks that can run you over without a second thought.
- TSK05, on 10/11/2009, -0/+5"You are MUCH more likely to die driving an SUV than a well built sedan."
Source please. - Mabowden, on 10/11/2009, -0/+5I'm sick of seeing all these cars/bikes/trikes (in this case) that "get 120 mpg" and never make it to production. The volt was supposed to be a less expensive super efficient sports car, and now its an expensive *****-looking plug-in prius. The aptera, tesla roadster, and fisker karma are really the only stand-out electric or hybrid cars that have really made a solid production super-efficient car.
- jtinz, on 10/11/2009, -1/+6Except that no other article I found describes it as a hybrid vehicle. It's powered by a 230 cc CNG engine.
- DigitalWorld, on 10/11/2009, -0/+5"A LONG TIME AGO in a galaxy far, far away"
- blqysmg, on 10/11/2009, -0/+5Okay, I'll eat crow on this one. I posted what I thought to be true. When you challenged me, I looked it up. Apparently, the high number of fatalities in an SUV have more to do with the popularity than safety.
Here is a statistic chart that shows SUVs have LOWER fatalities. I thought superior handling and the lack of the tendency to rollover in a crash improved the sedan's survivability rating over the lumbering SUV. I guess that's not what kills people. It must be all about the impact.
http://www.edmunds.com/ownership/safety/articles/1 ... - twinklyJesus, on 10/11/2009, -2/+7who said anything about this car "coming out"? It's a one-off concept car. It'll never be produced.
- Lonandubh, on 10/11/2009, -0/+4Looks like a T-rex head so I like it.
ftfy. - hildenborg, on 10/11/2009, -1/+4I thought it looked cool, I want one!
- NuttyAvatar, on 10/11/2009, -0/+3F*****g sick of concepts. Why should i know about it when its never going to be a practical reality? And by the way, its a f*****n mortorcycle. Glad they did not mess up there.
- Hynuk, on 10/12/2009, -0/+3Stop worrying about what others think of you by validating yourself against their preferences and you'll stop worrying about looking like a douche.
- samanathon, on 10/11/2009, -0/+3This is only a concept. I'm sure they will incorporate some of the things they learned into (nice looking) production vehicles.
- nsapra, on 10/11/2009, -0/+3yea obviously... we are the biggest...and the most roundest people on the planet.
- ThanatosST, on 10/11/2009, -0/+3near zero possibility chance of survival > zero chance of survival.
- twinklyJesus, on 10/11/2009, -2/+5No, it's a concept car and more than likely will never be put into production.
- sentinel106, on 10/11/2009, -0/+2Could you provide your source?
I'm skeptic simply because I've seen crash test videos ala YouTube of SUVs which have them decimating small and medium sized cars upon impact. Sure, if you're going 100MPH down the highway and you hit a brick wall, you are going to die. However, if John's Ford Explorer hits your Honda Civic, my money's on John. - tmacfan123, on 10/11/2009, -2/+4If only it didn't look terrible...and had one more or one less wheel...
- seansan, on 10/11/2009, -0/+2I'd buy it if it was under 20k
- Thermador, on 10/11/2009, -0/+2How do you even call shotgun?
- Joe_rigby, on 10/11/2009, -1/+3Attractive IS subjective. Some people find donkeys attractive, but nobody likes a jackass.
- michaelb1, on 10/11/2009, -0/+2Looks like a T-rex head but I like it.
- FunnyData, on 10/11/2009, -0/+2Hybrid still uses oil and oil will run out eventually. We need something clean and renewable like hydrogen
- atarijedi, on 10/11/2009, -0/+2You are right, it isn't a hybrid at all.
- michaelb1, on 10/11/2009, -0/+2I'd buy it.
- linagee, on 10/12/2009, -0/+2A better way to describe this is a graph that would have cents per mile on one axis and mile 10, mile 20, mile 30, on the other axis.
- Joe_rigby, on 10/11/2009, -0/+2Google invested in a company, they made a cooler looking vehicle than this. Cool as in very sperm-like.
http://www.aptera.com/ - nroose, on 10/11/2009, -4/+6It's not a car.
- Hurricane, on 10/11/2009, -0/+2Just a covered bike, nothing new here at all.
Many small bikes can get 100+ MPG.
I would like to see this thing get past federal highway standards in the USA, easy if categorized as a bike, but will not pass if categorized as a car. - jerryjamesstone, on 10/11/2009, -0/+2I dont fully disagree and agree. I mean, yah...there needs to be a measure for EVs and Hybrids but with hybrids specifically there is a relationship between how much fuel consumed and how far you can travel.
- atarijedi, on 10/11/2009, -0/+2First off, this isn't a hybrid. But even if it was, from what information is provided on the gas2 website, you don't know if it is a Parallel Hybrid or a Series Hybrid, so you can't say whether or not it every runs just an electric motor.
There is a huge difference, don't lump the two different kinds of hybrids together. - blqysmg, on 10/11/2009, -1/+3Just goes to show that the auto companies have been able to design a fuel efficient car all along. They just DID NOT. They are still going with expensive and limited production hybrids instead of more efficient aerodynamics. They say they are doing this because people won't buy the futuristic looking aerodynamically superior cars. Judging by Judicar's answer (above,) they might be right.
I'd by a Carver or one of these in a heartbeat over a Honda Civic, but then I'm that kind of guy. I don't buy a car that OTHER PEOPLE think looks good. For me, it's not about impressing my brother in law. - graminal, on 10/12/2009, -0/+2If you aren't ever plugging it into a socket, and it runs on gas, then MPG is just fine.
- blqysmg, on 10/11/2009, -1/+3Oddly enough, there doesn't seem to be a direct relationship between weight and survivability. Those huge SUVs don't do was well in crash tests as some of the smaller cars. On the road, the fatality statistics prove the point. You are MUCH more likely to die driving an SUV than a well built sedan.
Of course, I don't buy for safety. I've got two motorcycles and a truck. - Hurricane, on 10/12/2009, -0/+2Thats because there is a statistically high number of SUVs on the road.
In head on or offset collisons SUVs murder (literally) smaller vehicles, however SUVs do tend to have a tendency to roll over easier when leaving the road or during violent maneuvers.
Hopefully gas will go back up soon and put those murdering inefficient hunks of crapmetal back in the driveway/scrap heap again. - Barackalypse, on 10/11/2009, -0/+2I wish they'd focus their efforts on technology that is actually viable in the real world and not just applicable to any future Tron movie remakes.
- blqysmg, on 10/11/2009, -0/+2Attractive is subjective. Why isn't this attractive to you? Is it because it's all flat planes? Would a quick body style change that smoothed those out make a difference to you? Easy enough to do. This one isn't coming out, so it doesn't matter.
If it's the fact that it's three wheels and the general shape of it, then you've missed the whole point. Go back to your firebird or corvette or whatever "cool" car you drive and get 18 MPG. - sgblog, on 10/11/2009, -0/+1No trike can beat this one... :)
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/580280/indian_autori ... - carlosos, on 10/12/2009, -0/+1What this pretty much means is that they want to be prepared in case that the Volkwagen 1L will be a success.
- Lonandubh, on 10/12/2009, -0/+1Do you know of any trucks that get over 40 MPG?
- graminal, on 10/13/2009, -0/+1@ Lonandubh
"Yeah, but given the significantly lesser cost and environmental impact of home electricity, shouldn't we be looking to make every hybrid plug-in?"
I never said anything to dispute that. My comment was simply a reply that MPG is a perfectly fine measurement if the vehicle runs on gas and is not a plug in hybrid. Nowhere in the article or links did I see it mentioned that this vehicle would be getting electricity from the grid, so MPG works. If I read the article wrong, I apologize.
"Besides, we're already running into problems with plug-in hybrids claiming mpgs in the hundreds based off of 90% of their power coming from the wall..."
I agree, I think it is ridiculous for a vehicle that runs on grid electricity to try to claim a certain MPG. Once again, this wasn't even addressed in my original comment, so I'm not really sure why you brought it up. - Lonandubh, on 10/13/2009, -0/+1...so how about m/J and RFC: "Range on Full Charge"
