- sungoddess808, on 08/14/2008, -0/+69Better to have a recall than to have someone killed when the defective airbags do not deploy.

- picturestorm, on 08/14/2008, -2/+31A new car built by my company leaves somewhere traveling at 60 mph. The rear differential locks up. The car crashes and burns with everyone trapped inside. Now, should we initiate a recall? Take the number of vehicles in the field, A, multiply by the probable rate of failure, B, multiply by the average out-of-court settlement, C. A times B times C equals X. If X is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one.
- AmyVernon, on 08/14/2008, -1/+27Oops. Did you reallly need those air bags?
- spokenrope, on 08/14/2008, -2/+27A + B + C = X
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -2/+24Not so much on the ultimate passenger machine though, apparently.
- MarkusX, on 08/14/2008, -1/+21Better now than later.
- hackntossh, on 08/27/2008, -5/+25Dugg down. Voluntary recall of 200,000 vehicles for an aibag sensor that according to BMW
"At the present time, we are unaware of any accidents or injuries as a result of this issue. "

Broke My Wallet
Bought My Wife
Beautiful Mechanical Wonder
Now it stands for: Broke My Wife - inactive, on 08/14/2008, -4/+17bmw is a great car
- Cancerkitty, on 08/14/2008, -1/+13Exactly! I'd much rather have to bring my car in for a recall notice than have it fail in an accident.
- HyperJack, on 08/14/2008, -1/+13You must work for a major car company, right?
- Rothgarr, on 08/14/2008, -3/+14Don't GM and Ford usually recall vehicles by the millions?
- Msoltanian, on 08/14/2008, -2/+12Don't get it twisted, you are either in or not. BMW 4 Lyfe!
- itspuddingtime, on 08/14/2008, -1/+10if X is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one

Business woman on plane: Are there a lot of these kinds of accidents?
Narrator: You wouldn't believe.
Business woman on plane: Which car company do you work for?
Narrator: A major one. - tidu, on 08/14/2008, -0/+9you just wouldn't have any friends willing to drive with you.
- MikeSobe, on 08/14/2008, -1/+9Its multiplication not addition.
Probability of failure * Cost of settlement * Number of vehicles on the road.
Addition makes no sense. - lesleye, on 08/14/2008, -3/+11they're just lucky nobody WAS killed. Imagine the PR they'd get for that!
- SPECOPS, on 08/14/2008, -2/+10That is because they sell a whole-hell-of-a-lot-more of them.

- AlexanderBlue, on 08/14/2008, -0/+7Hmm. You a Lotus owner, by chance?
- logicalnoise, on 08/14/2008, -1/+8Actually Top gear has declared that all the ***** now drive Audi's.
- blueskydiver76, on 08/14/2008, -3/+9The ultimate killing machine.
Oh wait never mind we all know that's Chuck Norris. - yessuz, on 08/14/2008, -1/+7Try it, and you will know...
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -4/+10I would not care and would continue to buy BMWs.
- martynda, on 08/14/2008, -4/+10The difference is that a *****, Inc. won't admit to it and would rather take the lawsuits. BMW should be applauded for doing this before there are even any known injuries caused by this.
- orlyfactor, on 08/14/2008, -1/+7Most people driving are pricks, regardless of the make.
- cawpin, on 08/14/2008, -0/+6Why don't they just use the Toyota method and offer a "warranty enhancement?" That way they don't have call it a recall.
It can happen to the best. And notice it is voluntary.
http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Content/ContactUs/V ... - domomike, on 08/14/2008, -0/+5In other news: Toyota recently recalled Corollas because windows were randomly shattering and Honda recently recalled cars because the airbag sensor wires were corroding.
Recalls happen for all companies.
But for your information, we used to own two 7 series. (E38) BOTH of our cars broke down CONSTANTLY. The electrical system kept going crazy in one of them and in the other the backseat cooler leaked coolant all over the read seats. And that was for the flagship car. So, yes, BMW, along with Mercedes and Audi, struggle with reliability.
However, BMW is much more reliable than Mercedes Benz; Mercedes Benz is much more reliable than Audi. You can't take small cases of unreliable cars and then speak for the reliability rating for the entire company. But for the most part, BMW is making their cars more reliable as is Mercedes. Audi has been very scoring low in reliability ratings for a long time. Hopefully they'll improve. - Butros, on 08/14/2008, -0/+5Time is money friend.
- FamousAnus, on 08/14/2008, -0/+5Well...Relative to the Japanese and even Domestic (US) cars - they actually have been sliding in quality. They may be improving, but the rest of the world is improving faster.
http://www.jdpower.com/autos/ratings/dependability ...
If you actually check that link out, and sort by the overall dependability rating - more often than not, VW, Mercedes and BMW are closer to the bottom. Check 'midsize premium car' for an example of BMW. The compact car ratings aren't too kind to VW either. - logicalnoise, on 08/14/2008, -1/+6especially on those heavy ass BMW's
- cawpin, on 08/14/2008, -1/+6Aaaaahnold, as you put it, is Austrian. BMW is German.
- LOLTheBible, on 08/14/2008, -2/+7I have one too. But the difference is that you're a douchebag and I'm not. That makes me far better than you.
- swiftheart, on 08/14/2008, -2/+6This Fight Club quote appears about half a dozen times in this thread but the formula's true derivation is uncited.
The formula comes from Ford internal documents in regards to a faulty part in the Ford Pinto's fuel system, which caused many Pinto's to explode on rear impact. Ford was disinterested in fixing the part as well as voluntarily recalling the Pinto.
Ford also got its ass handed to itself in court and the punitive damages added an unexpected D to the equation that has made automakers since then more proactive about this sorta thing. :-) - orlyfactor, on 08/14/2008, -1/+5Is the plant in Spartanburg, SC the Third World?
- WELLDOITLIVE, on 08/14/2008, -2/+5People say there's no such thing as bad publicity, but in this case I would have to disagree.
Headline-"BMW faulty airbags kill cute 9 year old Chinese gymnast"
BMW bigwig-"Yea, free advertising!" - TheLoneHoot, on 08/14/2008, -0/+3Dugg down for being self centered enough to need to mention your alleged car costs $60K and then thinking that something that costs less is therefore a *****. BMWs have worse repair histories than Hondas, Toyotas, Subarus, and Hyundais.
I'm sure I'll be dugg down by the BMW fanboi mafia - but read Consumer Reports and see what they have to say about 'em. - Vesuvias, on 08/14/2008, -2/+5No.. you'll just have to be scraped off the asphalt... yay!
- riptor666, on 08/14/2008, -0/+3At least they said something before someone died. BMW is a fun car to drive but not worth the pain and agony. Someone scratches your car in a parking lot $1000 to repair. It eats gas like a bitch, and all the electronics ***** up. My dad had a 745 for about 2 years and nothing but trouble the only thing that worked right was the engine. The car does fly but only for the truly rich if you can't afford the expensive maintenance than stick with a Lexus, Infinity, Lincoln and Cadillac.
I have only driven a CTS besides the BMW but I like the ride and you can pick em up cheap and 04 model for 13-15k beats a civic any day. - firo85, on 08/14/2008, -2/+5Fight club anyone?
- AlexanderBlue, on 08/14/2008, -0/+3I think we should distinguish between "quality" (a degree of excellence and character) and "reliability" (consistently dependable over time).
To use some sweeping generalizations:
- Prior to the 1990s, Mercedes Benz held the crown for reliability. They were rock solid, held their value, and were inexpensive to keep operating over the long haul.
- MB, BMW, Audi, and VW tend to be of very high initial quality in terms of driving dynamics, the luxurious interiors, etc. But their failing within the last 15 years has been reliability - the ability of all of the components (even basic ones) to continue working properly over the long haul.
- Japanese cars still don't match the Germans in terms of driving dynamics, but Lexus has the luxury aspect nailed. If you've driven an LS lately, you now what I mean.
- As of the early to mid-part of this decade, the average Japanese, Korean, American, and even English cars were statistically more reliable over the long term than their German counterparts.
- Italian cars have always had "quality", but their reliability....
So if you buy a German car, IMHO it's because their unique qualities and strengths are worth the extra costs and issues. - inactive, on 08/14/2008, -0/+3How is that a joke? Mercedes are bloated machines that handle like tanks with tacky leather draped all over the inside.
- silveravnt, on 08/14/2008, -0/+3No BMW drivers are special pricks.
- AlexanderBlue, on 08/14/2008, -0/+3Reminds me of an old joke:
Q: What's the difference between a porcupine and a BMW?
A: A porcupine's prick is on the outside. - silveravnt, on 08/14/2008, -0/+3I didn't know they made an S class with an engine that small. No wonder you are cautious. J/K I drive Audis and even among European car fans BMW drivers have a bad reputation as jerks who got a good job and bought all the successories, not because they have taste but because they read about them in a magazine. My boss is that guy.
