- jerryjamesstone, on 11/12/2009, -0/+38VW has taken such a huge diesel market here that automakers like Toyota and Mazda are planning to copy them. With the BMW brand behind the car, I could see this really driving the diesel market here.
- schroeder, on 11/12/2009, -0/+28Say what you will, BMWs are amazing machines and are far better quality, in my opinion, than cars that cost much more.
- tugger, on 11/12/2009, -0/+23Really, here in the UK most people buy a diesel engine to save cash.
The great thing is that the cars are actually more drivable, with all the torque available at 1200 revs, this reduces gearchanges, makes overtaking easy and town fuel consumption very similar to long journeys.
It's quite frustrating to move back to petrol once you have gotten used to driving a diesel.
BMW spent 1.4 billion GBP to get hold of their 2 litre diesel (developed by Rover Group), and it's now seen in the 1, 3 and 5 series cars in europe. - JCEEZ, on 11/12/2009, -0/+19Diesel isn't what it's used to be. Now they burn cleaner, get better MPG and better performance. Europe has TDI cars all over the place, and they have been dealing with high gas prices forever. People here hear diesel and think 18 wheelers or old ***** cars with black fumes....
- angrytortilla, on 11/12/2009, -2/+18Cars are not allowed in the kitchen.
- rizzo2008, on 11/12/2009, -0/+16For people who think it won't be powerful enough the 123d sold in Europe (we will probably get the same engine more or less) uses a 2.0 liter turbodiesel that outputs 200 hp and 300 lb-ft which is enormous for an engine its size (and that kind of power output from a small diesel just shows how damn good BMW is a making engines). That and you get 40-45 mpg highway so freakin' awesome
- frequentFlyer, on 11/12/2009, -0/+14Let me explain: accelerating quickly and going fast is fun.
- sentry21, on 11/12/2009, -0/+12Mhm torque.
- mwilhelm, on 11/12/2009, -1/+12Only 80 years late...
- askantik, on 11/12/2009, -2/+11In the US we have to have the more "performance-oriented" variants... meaning the ability to accelerate just a little faster by sacrificing MPG. It's an American thing that I don't understand.... even as an American.
- scotchw, on 11/12/2009, -0/+9I drive a TDI Golf, and I love it. 45 MPG, and usually on biodiesel
- hootenanny1, on 11/12/2009, -0/+8Whaat? I drive a 9 year old BMW 3 liter diesel for several years now and so far at 14F/-10C it has always started just like in summer without any notable effort. Of course, it takes a bit longer until it reaches perfect oil temperature and therefore maximum efficiency - but consumption with my ice-cold diesel is still far far more efficient than an equivalent gasoline engine.
.... not to mention it goes like hell on the Autobahn. - Narsilianshard, on 11/12/2009, -0/+7finally! I never understood why diesel cars (not trucks) are so hard to find in the US.
- howdareyou, on 11/12/2009, -0/+7So true, BMW isn't lying when they call their cars the Ultimate Driving Machine.
- BigPapi, on 11/12/2009, -0/+6it's about freakin time!
- absolutionist, on 11/12/2009, -0/+5No its gasoline, Its only petrol if you're watching top gear.
- AROZ, on 11/12/2009, -0/+5What is it about the North American fear of diesel? Great modern diesels have been in production and sold in European markets for more than a decade. And in the rare cases that an automaker releases a diesel option, the journalists have to open with something to the tune of this cliche: "diesels have gotten a lot cleaner...this isn't your dad's diesel". Maybe it's the marketing department that prefers the bigger horsepower figures of gasoline engines, but either way it's illogical.
Some diesels more efficient than hybrid gas/electric on the highway. - Homerr, on 11/12/2009, -0/+5If you've never driven a diesel you should really give it a try before you knock it.
- rizzo2008, on 11/12/2009, -0/+5they are already selling the 335d and the X5 diesel in the US both with straight six diesel engines.
- Thud, on 11/12/2009, -0/+5"Then buy a motorcycle. Cheaper and faster than most cars."
And more fuel efficient too! But then if fuel efficiency is what you're after, why not buy a scooter. Or a golf cart. Or a pair of rollerblades!
It turns out that some people would prefer the security of a car, AND want a little "oomph" under the accelerator. What's wrong with that? It's not like you can't buy slow, fuel efficient cars in the US, those are certainly available too if you want one.
As for me, I'd take the bmw 335d which makes 425lb-ft of torque and gets nearly the same MPG as a Honda Civic. - Mareshalu, on 11/12/2009, -0/+4I left my parents house in Europe a long time ago chump
- scotchw, on 11/12/2009, -0/+4My VW TDI Golf can take the truck nozzle....
- FritoPendejo, on 11/12/2009, -1/+4Let me get this straight... You're arguing that "performance-oriented" machines are an American phenomenon?
- askantik, on 11/12/2009, -0/+3I'm going off the article.
"In keeping with BMW's performance image, we will get the more powerful variants, likely the dual turbo, 204 hp version used in the 123d rather than the super-high-efficiency versions."
For clarification, we = US. - Mareshalu, on 11/12/2009, -2/+5I will sell my x3 in a ny second for a 3d.
- ricksite, on 11/12/2009, -0/+3I can't wait for Subaru to bring their boxer turbo diesel engine to the US. I have heard they are getting 42mpg combined city/hwy mileage out of it.
- cha5e, on 11/13/2009, -0/+3I would hardly call the diesel infrastructure "woefully inadequate".
If you're taking a highway trip, every gas station has diesel.
If you need diesel in your neighborhood, sure maybe only 1/3 of the stations have it, but you learn pretty quickly which ones those are.
If you need diesel when you're visiting a different neighborhood, well...at least with the VW TDIs, the fuel light comes on when 2.5 gallons remain, and that's about 100 miles, so if you don't happen to see a station that has diesel, you can just wait until you're back on the highway for the return trip.
Seriously, I've been driving a diesel car in the US for 10 years, and I've never had a problem finding fuel for it. - waydee, on 11/12/2009, -0/+3It happens, it does require a lot of stupidity on the part of the driver to do so however due to the BIG warning that says DIESEL FUEL ONLY.
- emptyo, on 11/12/2009, -0/+3I had such a hard on for the BMW 118d while I was in Europe. It was the "honda civic" of Europe...they were everywhere. I know what my next car will be...
- plainOldFool, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2@muzzy: It's been a while since I actually looked at the reliability rankings but since the mid-90s German ELECTRONICS has been extremely suspect but I've also heard their mechanical reliability is as good as it's ever been. I love BMW (I'd love to have a 325i) and I really like Mercedes but you are right in saying that Japanese cars are far better in overall quality. However, you cannot compare a BWM or and Audi to a Honda or Toyota. VW vs. Honda and Toyota would be a fairer comparison. I'd only compare the German luxury brands to Lexus, Acura and Infinity (yes, yes I know these are Toyota, Honda and Nissan, respectively. But the luxury lines are the only way to compare based on sticker price).
- FritoPendejo, on 11/12/2009, -1/+3Is that right? Is it also crisps and not chips? Where are the servers for this site located?
- macfanboi, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2Availability? Very hard to buy a diesel VW in MA.
- JakeThePimp, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2Is it going to cost a ridiculous amount more then the petrol version like the current 3 series offering? It's hard to justify $2k in fuel saving when the diesel option is $10k more.
- stubear, on 11/12/2009, -1/+3"What is it about the North American fear of diesel?"
Blame it on California. They outright banned diesel vehicles instead of setting emission standards for them that a company could meet. 12+ other states followed suit and it will take quite a bit of effort to bring diesel to these states as the infrastructure to support them is woefully inadequate. - askantik, on 11/12/2009, -1/+3Then buy a motorcycle. Cheaper and faster than most cars.
- BigPapi, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2The 335d fails for two reasons:
1 - It's goddamn expensive and doesn't offer a substantial increase in fuel efficiency for the price difference over the 328.
2 - It's not available with AWD. Regardless of your opinions on AWD, the majority of 3-series sold in snowy regions trumps RWD. The only exceptions are models that aren't available in AWD (ie 2007 335i coupe).
I don't understand why BMW has been making a huge push in marketing the 335d and X5d in the US when their dealerships typically only have one of each model on the lot at a time. - plainOldFool, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2VM and Mercedes have been selling diesels here for a while.
- plainOldFool, on 11/13/2009, -0/+2Which is why I'm happy to stick with my '95 Tercel with all of it's 199k miles.
- askantik, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2My car is a 4 cylinder regular gas... not even a manual, either, and it gets plenty of "oomph." My thing about a motorcycle is that he simply said accelerating and going fast is fun. The primary objective of a car for most people (I'd think at least) is to get them from point A to point B, not necessarily to feel like you are at an amusement park. However, one can easily get that from a motorcycle at a way lower price point than a car.
BTW, since you compared the BMW 335d and the Civic, want to do a price comparison on those for me? ;) - JCEEZ, on 11/13/2009, -0/+2@wolfmann
I'm going to go ahead and say that Sweden, Denmark, Norway is a lot colder then lots of America.
Even in the cold as balls places in America, you have to warm up your car, how is that any different with a diesel? - lateralus, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2Rumor has it the Audi A5 lineup in North America will get a 3.0 Turbo Diesel getting 35mpg and roughly 300HP.
I only hope these diesels don't tack on another $10k to the prices of the already expensive A4/A5's. Also, I wonder how maintenance (fees) will changes. - nicc, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2@scotchw: my 09 Jetta TDI can't...
- namisung, on 11/12/2009, -2/+4cylinders are sexy
- defendliberty, on 11/12/2009, -1/+2made me lol, woke up the wife, kid yells WHAT!?
Doghouse. - ryrocker, on 11/22/2009, -0/+1^
oh snap! - D3L3T3D, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1I've encountered enough people who've put diesel in their gasoline-powered cars that I would not be shocked to hear about someone putting gasoline in a diesel.
- kgerm, on 11/20/2009, -0/+1
i am still waiting for the diesel Honda civic to come on over to the states ...with around 45 mpg and i have seen people get 74mpg hypermiling ...
not sure why they will (REALLY) not let them import them .. i do know that they are going to start to smog diesels in 2011 i believe in California..
http://www.mpgomatic.com/honda_civic_diesel.html - defendliberty, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1@geogeer, Do you live in Siberia? -35 ffs that's cold.
- Vodd9, on 11/16/2009, -0/+1The real question I think is why are car companies working their asses off for hybrid cars when TDI gives a similar or better MPG.
- ryrocker, on 11/22/2009, -0/+1id like to see a diesel hybrid....
