- timusca, on 04/30/2008, -12/+116Why do all of these low-gas cars always look so damn queer?
- jontalisman, on 04/30/2008, -9/+107Does it come with a life insurance policy for when you get hit by an SUV?
- FaithclubDotNet, on 04/30/2008, -3/+97Last I checked, the Jetsons car flew.
- wishninja, on 04/30/2008, -4/+79I ride a motorcycle and have much less protection. Stop being such a pussy.
- lpmiller, on 04/30/2008, -9/+59Looks cool, but I wouldn't want to be stuck between two semi's in it.
- EricG, on 04/30/2008, -1/+46Isn't this the car from Austin Powers Goldmember?
http://www.hightechscience.org/Sparrow_for_Goldmem ... - TheFamousOne2, on 04/30/2008, -2/+36Now make a version that doesnt look like Don Vito's retarded inbred son, and you have yourself a deal!
- inactive, on 04/30/2008, -6/+28Why do all gas efficient vehicles have to look like a deformed tampon?
- inactive, on 04/30/2008, -6/+28I saw some yuppie cruising around Seattle in one the other day. I love the concept, but at $36,000 this is a joke.
From the FAQ page:
"It is not a car and it does not meet car crash standards. The NmG meets the DOT safety standards required for motorcycles and three wheelers. "
http://www.myersmotors.com/faq.html
Like others have said, this is a death trap.... - louiebaur, on 04/30/2008, -1/+21The parking in between the cars is pretty funny
- WolverineBlue, on 04/30/2008, -0/+20Say "a SUV" out loud. Even if you went through the trouble of expanding the abbreviation, you still sound stupid.
- madbadger, on 04/30/2008, -0/+18Interesting: "And because the US Department of Transportation classifies the NmG as a motorcycle, it’s permitted to go on highways traveling to speeds around 75mph while other electric vehicles are legally limited to speeds of 35mph or less."
So does that mean it's allowed to split lanes in California? =) - thestrongrope, on 04/30/2008, -2/+19Does everyone that say this is a deathtrap or unsafe also feel that Motorcycles are deathtraps? I mean this really doesn't look much worse than riding on a Harley or a crotch rocket. It looks a little odd, yes, but that shouldn't have any bearing on its safety.
- RomeyRome, on 04/30/2008, -5/+22Alternative energy cars will never take off if they keep making them look like sex toys.
- superdoofus, on 04/30/2008, -0/+17very good point. as a motorcycle owner myself, i know that if i were to get swiped by anything i would go flying and end up scraping across the pavement, if not worse. the bright colors of the vehicles are likely as attention-grabbing as loud pipes on motorcycles and i would venture a guess that even the oddity of the vehicle's visual shape would register in a driver's peripheral vision.
- weister42, on 04/30/2008, -0/+17You'd be pretty hurt getting squished by two semi's either way.
- inactive, on 04/30/2008, -2/+18Less materials/weight and better aerodynamics have their price.
- JAVandiver, on 04/30/2008, -0/+15The Aptera can seat, two has a much further range, and quite frankly looks cooler. I am saving my buckazoids for the Aptera, thank you very much.
- inactive, on 04/30/2008, -1/+15"reasonable price of $36,000." umm its not reasonable. Although i think its a great idea, the cost is very high
- ileftfark, on 04/30/2008, -2/+16Like a moped or a chubby chick- fun to ride until your friends find out.
- nikhilnidhi, on 04/30/2008, -0/+12Somebody didn't pay attention in 3rd grade Grammar. It's not an actual vowel that constitutes the use of the word 'an', but the vowel SOUND that precedes the next word. Because the 'S' in 'SUV' is pronounced with a short 'e' sound, you must precede the word with an 'an'.
- newsfully, on 04/30/2008, -0/+12Does it fly? No? Then it's not a "Jetsons" car.
/hopeful - thebaron2, on 04/30/2008, -0/+12Seriously, you couldn't even fit a briefcase or laptop bag in that thing unless you put it on your lap. And 25-30 mile range? Maybe that's good for most of Inhabitat's writers' commutes, but it's not going to fly in any of the Chicago suburbs as far as a work commute.
$36K is too much for me for a single-seater tricycle type bike that I'll only really use on weekends. I'm with JAVandiver. - inactive, on 04/30/2008, -2/+14Yeah, I'd totally buy one if it looked better.
- bincoder, on 04/30/2008, -5/+17$36,000!!! OMG! screw that, just a tad too pricey for a little death trap. Sounds more like it should read $5 a mile not 2 cents.
'other electric vehicles are legally limited to speeds of 35mph or less'
That I did not know... I guess even if you have an EV made of a 2 ton pickup truck that has 500 horsepower, forget about driving it over 35 because it has nasty, scary electricity in it. It doesnt exist yet, but this law sounds like the real reason that electrics are not going to be accepted anytime soon. Thanks a lot DOT. - Jamikest, on 04/30/2008, -0/+11Why highlight a "car" made by Corbin, sold for 12K, bankrupted, picked up by Myers Motors and now sold for 35K? Great idea, great interest, if it was still 12K....
- greentime, on 04/30/2008, -2/+13This looks like such a fun ride!
- JAVandiver, on 04/30/2008, -0/+9Same with the Aptera, I believe.
- unpolloloco, on 04/30/2008, -2/+1125-30 mi range??? 3 hour charge time??? It would take me 30 hours to go home from college (and I'm in-state). I could bike faster!!!
- ecomod, on 04/30/2008, -6/+15oh shut it you haters - this thing is super cute. too bad every other car out there is so large, it definitely would be a bit scary to drive on the freeway. but for city driving it would be perfect.
- inactive, on 04/30/2008, -2/+10A tad.
Actually I notice the first comment was about the size of SUV, not about their gas guzzliness, so I take my rant back. - thestrongrope, on 04/30/2008, -0/+8Nice, but if I am going to be in a single person three wheel vehicle, I want to make it a Carver. Those things look sick!
- EtherGnat, on 04/30/2008, -1/+9Well over half your fuel at highway speeds goes towards overcoming air resistance. If you want to make a vehicle more fuel efficient you have to make it more aerodynamic, which dictates the shape. Maybe, just maybe, our paradigm of what constitutes a beautiful car needs to change with modern necessities.
- inactive, on 04/30/2008, -8/+16I'd only feel comfortable driving that on a golf course.
- goldpress, on 04/30/2008, -0/+8From what I've seen of wrecks involving semi's... your life will pretty much suck no matter what you're driving. Personally, if I'm ever in a wreck involving a semi, I hope I'm driving the semi.
- JimW311, on 04/30/2008, -2/+9Wasting gas effects me! Global warming, prices (supply and demand), car options. So you probably believe it's ok to turn your music up as loud as you want whenever you want too, after all it's your stereo. Do believe it's ok to drink and drive? After all if you get in a wreck it's your life. Is it ok to let your house go in the ***** and bring other people property value down? It's your house you know. But that is the american way of life, ***** everybody else I'm going do what I want. And no I'm not a liberal european, I live in america. Think about what you do, it effects other people too!!!!
- SlappyJ, on 04/30/2008, -3/+10Yeah, until Americans stop driving so many SUVs, no way in hell I'd drive that thing on the highway.
- cowsgonemadd3, on 04/30/2008, -1/+8Last time I checked the jetsons was a cartoon.
- inactive, on 04/30/2008, -2/+9Then do so.
- 9bpm9, on 04/30/2008, -2/+936 grand and it seats one person? They have to be freaking nuts.
- inactive, on 04/30/2008, -1/+8That's nothing. I've got a Flintstones care that costs $0.00 per mile.
- chmcarro, on 04/30/2008, -1/+8Jetson's car = briefcase.
- lettruthout, on 04/30/2008, -1/+7I'd back your statement if it weren't for the fact that my tax dollars are supporting oil companies and have been paying for oil wars - both so gas prices could be kept low. Also I resent the fact that my neighbors are being killed and injured (while trying to kill and injure others) to support our oil habit. So actually yes, this does apply to all forms of energy waste. You also should think about how much extra pollution your vehicle puts out. What right to you have to steal so much more of our air?
- dinot, on 04/30/2008, -5/+11"Insane liberalism, trying to make everyone feel guilt for every little thing they do."
Kinda like religion, yeah? - wes00mertes, on 04/30/2008, -0/+6Looked better. Sat more than one and looked safer to drive in. That'd make it much more appealing.
- fmaxwell, on 04/30/2008, -0/+6Anyone who thinks that dumping a motorcycle and letting go is ever a way to reduce the seriousness of injuries needs to take public transportation. I've been riding for over 40 years and I dont "dump and let go." Ever.
- cowsgonemadd3, on 04/30/2008, -1/+7Come on people ride scooters and motorcycles down the freeway and mopeds in town all the time. Stop worrying so much people.
- gothsquirrel, on 04/30/2008, -0/+5I tend to agree. It's an awesome idea, but i can get a gas powered car for $3000 (whitch is what i paid for my car that gets 35mpg) and use the extra $33,000 to buy the gas when i need it.
- peestandingup, on 04/30/2008, -3/+8It's called being responsible. Cranking up the heat in your house all winter long with the windows open doesn't just effect you & your utility bill, you moron. Same as if you left your water faucet running 24/7.
- fmaxwell, on 04/30/2008, -1/+6What if you stopped being such a pussy? Christ! I've got three street-legal motorcycles and you don't hear me whining about hypothetical accidents.
