- inactive, on 06/21/2009, -5/+75Toyota makes the better product, they should be #1. It's how things work. GM lost sight of that long ago.
- KloroFormd, on 06/21/2009, -1/+23What does the make have to do with your friends leaving something on, draining the battery?
- jerryjamesstone, on 06/21/2009, -15/+35Well, since the US makers tend to suck ass bigtime...not surprising.
- Epik, on 06/21/2009, -2/+20Toyota is still doing well but Hyundai and Kia are improving at a quicker rate. VW also has big plans for itself but if it doesn't get it's reliability under control it's not gonna get very far.
- mogebier, on 06/21/2009, -10/+27But the US auto makers are borderline retarded in the fact that they saw this coming and did NOTHING to stop it.
Toyota changed cars in their lines to be more fuel-efficient, which is what people want now. Not huge SUV's. - Konrad9, on 06/21/2009, -0/+15My friend's early 90's geo metro had to jump start my '07 Mazda3, but how does that have any bearing on this article?

- chriskzoo, on 06/22/2009, -0/+9Top Dog lost $7.7 BILLION last quarter.
- lead2thehead, on 06/21/2009, -6/+14It's amazing what you can do without unions holding you back.
- Konrad9, on 06/21/2009, -0/+8Honda's losing more money than Ford
- guinpen, on 06/21/2009, -2/+10from the gecko? get-go?
- Hiltonizer, on 06/21/2009, -7/+14except Ford just surpassed Toyota last month in overall vehicle sales in the US... no mention of that here.
Oh, and the Focus and Fusion Hybrid own the ***** out of the Corrola and Prius in every measurable metric.
And i'll put my F150 against a Tundra any day.
GO FORD! - etx313, on 06/22/2009, -0/+7Standard marketing sponge response. Look up the facts please.
- Hodor, on 06/21/2009, -6/+12it's a good thing everyone is beating up on the unions, it's not like they do anything to avoid the situations you describe.
/s - bdbr, on 06/22/2009, -0/+6Toyota isn't called "American" for the same reason Wal-Mart isn't called a Chinese company just because they have low-wage jobs in China. The profits go elsewhere.
- mmwilhelm, on 06/22/2009, -0/+6Wow, Dude. You actually looked at the data instead of spouting the 80's-era 'statistics'. I'm SO tired of my lame-ass friends telling me about quality, when they wouldn't know a transmission from a hubcap.
- govsucks, on 06/21/2009, -3/+9And yet people keep coming to them for jobs of their own free will.
- jhusker4, on 06/22/2009, -0/+6Toyota does have SUVs that aren't really fuel-efficent but I guess that just doesn't count because they are Toyota right?
- etx313, on 06/22/2009, -0/+5I have a ford truck from the 80's with over 350k miles. Starts every day. What's your point?
- Konrad9, on 06/21/2009, -1/+6Holy crap, an informed comment instead of just saying yay Japan boo big 3
<3 - heresy_fnord, on 06/22/2009, -0/+5Toyota is taking bailout money from it's own government. Things haven't settled yet...
- billraydrums, on 06/21/2009, -2/+7I quit buying American cars back in 2000. A dealership sold me a Ford Aerostar of about 3 years old and it was nothing but problems. I had to get an attorney to get the damn thing fixed (warranty issues)
Shortly after that I bought a Toyota van, and I'm over 240k miles. Aside from changing the brakes and oil, the vehicle gives me not one problem. - govsucks, on 06/22/2009, -0/+5@Swivel
Look cry baby, either you want the job or not, I have people waiting to interview so take the job or go outside and cry. - charm803, on 06/21/2009, -12/+17In 1953, GM had 51% of the auto market.
In 1992, GM was going through a similar situation because (surprise!) they were making cars no one wanted and needed to rehaul their product line. Their market share fell to 35%
(Source: Principle of Marketing, 2nd Edition/Seminik & Bamossy/pg.3)
GM killed their electric car because they kept telling consumers not to buy their product.
In 1997, Toyota introduced the first Prius in Japan. When your competition is looking at alternatives in fuel efficient cars, it's probably a good idea to look into it.
Instead, GM, Ford & Chrysler sat back and cry because they didn't see it coming.
It's just business. - rocketman42, on 06/22/2009, -1/+5Shhh, Toyota is the Google (or Apple) of auto manufacturers right now. It doesn't matter if they are losing money, or making less fuel efficient full-size trucks than Chevy, or having more product recalls than ever.
- inactive, on 06/22/2009, -4/+8Riddle me this, if Toyota makes vehicles in Kentucky, Indiana, and Texas, (among many other places), how are they not considered "American" car companies?
I'll tell you why, it's all about whether or not its union made or not. My next car will be an American made car but not union made. Sane people agree, unions have run their course. Good for their time but they're a dying breed. - scubajim, on 06/22/2009, -0/+4I guess you don't know history. Demming went to each US auto manufacture and offered to work with them. They all turned him down. It was ONLY after that he went to Japan. Japan welcomed him with open arms. Also the US auto manufactures could have done what Demming did at any time after that, but they didn't focus on it. So Demming is not a traitor.
- kingofinternet, on 06/21/2009, -3/+7That evil biased media again. Up to their kooky tricks!
If only they gave them more positive press people would have been buying Pontiac Aztecs left and right. - Deleted4disnFed, on 06/21/2009, -1/+5I guess you haven't read much about the history of GM... I wouldn't say they're evil though, just too fat to see their own *****. Bad management and power hungry Unions. If they weren't so ***** to their employees way back when, they would have never turned into a Union ran corp.
- mmwilhelm, on 06/22/2009, -0/+4I always get > 250K miles from my American made cars. I figure anyone who doesn't is probably lame. Yes, that may include you.
- Praelior, on 06/22/2009, -1/+5Its because the Toyota vehicle is engineered in Japan, and many of its parts come from Japanese suppliers. Imagine building a car being a long tunnel. Most of that tunnel is in Japan for Toyota vehicles, its just that the tunnel's outlet is in Kentucky. (where the car is assembled)
GM/Ford/Chrysler on the other hand have massive engineering/support centers. (In Warren, Dearborn, and Auburn Hills respectively), and the money flow remains in the United States, instead of going back to Japan in Toyota's case.
Sure, building cars here does support a tremendous amount of jobs, but the heavy tech jobs for the Big 3 are all in the US, whereas there are virtually none here for Toyota.
Toyota, US Employment - 35,838 (from http://www.toyota.com/about/our_business/toyota_in ...
GM US Employment (Sept 2008)- 123,000 ( http://idea.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/40730/0000 ... - Moralogic, on 06/21/2009, -2/+6Prove it or it didn't happen. I have seen UAW people post this crap all the time, but can never back it up.
- Natru3al, on 06/21/2009, -5/+9This. What you are describing alanocu is what life would be like in a non union industry.
- Mneitzel, on 06/22/2009, -0/+4Maintenance is important, with that even Dodge full size vans can reach over 200,000. So in my mind, that it can reach high mileage says nothing about the manufacturer.
Toyota is showing signs of losing focus, they are next.... - Pxtl, on 06/22/2009, -0/+3The most important statistic for a car-buyer, the long-term TCO, really can't be calculated based on their current generation of cars. You have to go back like a decade before you can get accurate numbers for that. So if Ford is making better cars than Toyota right now, there's no way of knowing about it since we don't know if parts will be falling off in five years or not.
- bdbr, on 06/22/2009, -1/+4Just Google two words and you'll find how wrong you are: union and massacre. Unions have run their course, but at one time they were essential in providing a safe working environment (which included not getting shot by your employer).
- inactive, on 06/22/2009, -0/+390% of the time, the reason for mechanical failure in a vehicle is in the driver's seat.
- Racer20, on 06/21/2009, -1/+4And that is relevant how? All that indicates is the size of your gas tank. Even then, I highly doubt your Camry has a 9 gallon tank.
- cawpin, on 06/21/2009, -7/+10Toyota does NOT make a better product. They have more recalls than GM or Ford and that's not including the ones that they cover up and never issue.
- uswarrior1, on 06/21/2009, -6/+9Ford is should be the top car, they still have trucks from the 50's still running like new, can toyota say that?
- s0krat3z, on 06/21/2009, -4/+7Buried for implying that organized monkeys build American automobiles. Say it with me now ,engineers design the vehicles, laborers assemble them.
- Konrad9, on 06/21/2009, -3/+6Toyota MADE a better product... they're starting to suffer from actually having a gigantic userbase and pumping out more cars than they can handle. They aren't the king of reliability that their name implies, though they do have several US brands beat.
They deserve to be where they are, but if they don't turn around they're going to have the same problem the Big 3 did, too many low quality products. - NoNameWorks, on 06/21/2009, -3/+5Civic = Corolla
Accord < Camry
Fit > Yaris (maybe, not my style so I don't really care)
Insight < Prius - Nichiren, on 06/22/2009, -0/+2A little bit of history: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W._Edwards_Deming
- Swivelstick, on 06/22/2009, -0/+2entitle me? When the ***** did I even mention myself anyway it's ***** like you that have lead to the demise of the middle class
- GaltShrugged, on 06/22/2009, -1/+3@Swivel, 10% unemployment doesn't not entitle you to anything. It is not Toyota's problem. They don't owe you anything. Take it, or go live in a ditch. Either way, I don't care.
- Trick07, on 06/22/2009, -0/+2GM & Ford probably have some good cars out there... If I were in the market I *may* consider a Ford. I gave up on Jeep's years ago because the sales and service outright sucks.
When you have a business model based on lies, deceit and screwing over your customer at all points of purchase, you are bound to lose many customers forever. Forever has arrived for the Big 3... - greenlight2001, on 06/21/2009, -1/+3seeing=saying?
- inactive, on 06/21/2009, -1/+3losing*
- mmwilhelm, on 06/22/2009, -0/+2I can't wait to see the response.
