- JerichoSam, on 07/03/2008, -0/+31No surprise: I don't see one East Coast city on the list.
- Cerealkillr, on 07/03/2008, -0/+20It's odd seeing a story on digg, where the List is only part of the story.
- AmyVernon, on 07/03/2008, -2/+21gee, Sioux Falls is the safest? could it be that there are about five cars there and everyone's nice? they probably don't run red lights either.
- hollywoodphony, on 07/03/2008, -1/+15I can't believe LA isn't on here.
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -2/+15when your pulling an ax-laden cart - it is easy to have safe drivers
- 11Christine, on 07/03/2008, -0/+12My city (Boston) has awful drivers.
- Cancerkitty, on 07/03/2008, -0/+10Hey, Detroit is the best among large cities. Good for us.
- gavinhudson, on 07/03/2008, -0/+10No. actually, every person with drunk driving on their record has just received a clean slate by the government where I like in South Korea. I'd say not.
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -0/+10Nope. Boston is hilariously bad.
- life38, on 07/03/2008, -2/+11In New York there is no J walking. In Boston they are just drive crazy because they act like just like the cows whom originally roamed the streets in the days of the earlier settlers. They drive where ever and when ever. Yellow just means go faster. Stop signs mean a rolling stop!!.
- lhodsdon, on 07/03/2008, -0/+9Uhmmmm, i live next to Irvine and little saigon.... i'm going to say no. Rich people who don't care how they drive because the world owes THEM a living. and then the spectrum of people not used to adhering to traffic laws. And general 405 traffic. haha
- thejokell, on 07/03/2008, -0/+9It's not odd seeing a comment on digg, where commas are used in places they aren't supposed to be.
- daxxer, on 07/03/2008, -0/+8Anyone sitting on the fence about whether to leave Southern Calif because of the traffic gridlock and horrible safety conditions should IMMEDIATELY pack up and head to Sioux Falls. Great place and we'll miss you ... heh. heh ...
- Nomad64, on 07/03/2008, -0/+8Here is a link to the actual report in PDF format: http://media.allstate.com/documents/291;download?s ...
- btgoss, on 07/03/2008, -1/+8Isn't that because no one can afford cars in Detroit anymore... so the streets are empty...
At least that is how it looks on Robocop reruns. - revolushun, on 07/03/2008, -0/+7Well people in those areas learn to drive in that sort of weather. It's when a southern state gets an ice storm that you better watch out.
- alexra, on 07/03/2008, -0/+7Detroit!!!!
- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -0/+7I echo all the comments about Boston...terrible drivers! that's why I DON'T drive here!
- itspuddingtime, on 07/03/2008, -0/+7Well you won't see any Massachusetts cities in the list because Allstate doesn't sell policies there.
In fact this whole "study" is flawed... they only consider Allstate policies, and skip some states entirely. This is a study of accident rates among Allstate-insured drivers. Not necessarily reflective of the entire US population. - celticanglican, on 07/03/2008, -0/+6Drivers in my city are just nuts!
- wildfire, on 07/03/2008, -0/+6How much signal I need to cut across eight lane? None? I turn now. Good luck, everybody else!
- DiggExchange, on 07/03/2008, -1/+6May be
- arlok789, on 07/03/2008, -3/+8Boston sucks for reasons besides driving. Try the huge population of RedSox fans. I am pretty sure that even if there were statistics for Boston, DC still has the worst roads in the country. I've driven in both Boston and DC (I live in DC so maybe I am biased here too) and I feel like DC might be worse by about a billion times. To say that some drivers are "better than others" is a joke though. People everywhere are eff-ing retarded when it comes to driving.
- ace429k, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5I'm from Michigan and all I have to say is that for once we're not on the bottom of some list! Us Michiganians are so proud! now GTFOutta my way.
- eengineer, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4And what age would you recommend they start to drive? 18? 21? 25? At some point you have to start the learning process. Your argument is flawed, very very flawed.
- sphincterwart, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4huh?
- Cancerkitty, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4At the rate we're going, it'll be like that in another couple years.
- Halgy, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4Gee, that is almost relevant to this story.
- leonardoty, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4I live in Lincoln, Nebraska, and we have some of the most inconsiderate drivers in the world. The drivers always yell at their kids, talk on the cellphone, and if you aren't going at least 5 miles over the speed limit, someone will pop a cap in your ass.
And that's just the women. - trying2hide, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4It doesn't really matter. The earthquake is going to happen and then the whole state is going to be in the ocean anyway.
At least that is what I was told in school 30 years ago.
That and when I entered the work force the US would be on the metric system by then. - Halgy, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4I never want to go to an actual big city when 120,000 people isn't considered anything.
- DreKor, on 07/03/2008, -3/+7False. You're assuming they have traffic lights.
- spielen, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4I don't know how Lexington, KY is number 9. Running red lights is encouraged here and a good rule of thumb is "if the person in front of you goes, you go."
- Halgy, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4And consider: in South Dakota kids can get their driver's license at 14.
- DrMonkeyLove, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3I've been through Boston a bunch of times. You people are terrible drivers. The rest of the Northeast uses the term "Masshole" for a reason.
- tim620, on 07/03/2008, -1/+4Um, there are plenty of traffic lights here (Sioux Falls). Too many in some areas. Sioux Falls is also the fastest growing city in the Midwest (I think Forbes had something on that).
I think the real reason for the "safe driver" status is that the roads are all flat, wide, straight and there is less stuff to hit. - Vertabreaker, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3Who cares about the safest? I want to see what cities have the worst drivers.
Although I'm sure I could guess the top 5 without a problem. - sillymeganlee, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3It doesn't surprise me that Tennessee is on there twice. I've visited the state several times and have always been amazed at how kind drivers are to each other. My home state of Pennsylvania doesn't believe in roadside courtesy.
- RG13, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3Under the pic:
"Motorists in Washington, D.C., are most at risk, according to the study, averaging an accident once every 5.4 years" - warrior007, on 07/03/2008, -1/+4 Boy I am glad that I don't live in any of these cities!
- technogenius, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3I live in a DC suburb, I came from an upstate NY suburb. The drivers in DC are pricks. I see many more stupid actions here then I ever did in upstate NY.
- FearFactory, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3People in northern Virginia are crazy. Climbing gas prices seem to have no effect on people around here. They still race between red lights. There are a few Hummers that crawl around with every chrome accessory you can fit on the thing + chrome rims. I always see the minivans with rusted paint and 3 missing hub caps pulled over by the cops. Don't forget the hardcore people who like to drive around at 10pm with no headlights on.
- cawpin, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3Whoever did this study is a ***** idiot. Phoenix has the worst drivers I've ever seen. I'm convinced that turn signals are an option on cars sold here. Stopping at red lights is also optional.
- kkitsune, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3Unless I am missing something, I think they are playing with statistics a bit. Allstate did the rankings based on internal crash data...but Allstate only controls a 12% market share (According to the article). So Sioux Falls may be the best of Allstate's insured drivers, but you can't really make a call for the entire United States based on this data.
- akatherder, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3I'm from Michigan too and I can't believe that 4 of the top 10 safest cities are here. No one pays attention to the signs or lights in downtown Detroit. M-59 through Sterling Heights doubles as a drag strip (hey they raised the speed limit from 55 to 70 so we can do 90 now!). If you stand outside some of the auto plants in Warren at quitting time, I'm sure you'll see some attempted vehicular homicides. I haven't been to Grand Rapids in a while, so I can't say much about them.
All I can think of is that there are a lot more cars per person in Michigan than other regions so the statistics all balance out. - FrankTheTank17, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3Man it's probably a good thing Massachusetts wasn't part of the study or else we'd officially be known as the state with the worst drivers in the US. =
- prop, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3I think Lexington is the only city where half the drivers on the road have been drinking at any point in time. I've lived in Lexington for about 2 years and have been hit by two drunk drivers who decided that traffic signals were more of a suggestion then a law.
- whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -0/+3Clearly you've never had the pleasure of visiting Sioux Falls. The driving there is as bad as anywhere I've visited. Plus, they have these steep roads that are SO much fun when they ice over in the winter.
- sneedo, on 07/03/2008, -0/+3I used to live in Lexington and anytime I'd leave the house I'd see some wreck on new circle road even on the nicest days.
But when it would rain, holy ***** the hicks would freak the ***** out. - bigpixl, on 07/03/2008, -1/+4False. You're assuming because you've never been to Sioux Falls.
