- inactive, on 11/17/2008, -1/+26Pretty awesome Hot Rods
- AmyVernon, on 11/17/2008, -1/+24I love the old-model cars all decked out like this. They have so much style to start with.
- cuestbeats, on 11/18/2008, -0/+18these are supposed to be steampunk? not even close.
- Shiftgood, on 11/18/2008, -2/+17going steampunk?
rat rods were around long before steampunk. Show a little respect. - wipis, on 11/18/2008, -0/+12This look isn't exactly steam punk to me. This sort of throw back hot rod has been around for a while maybe just not as popular.
I was hoping this was going to be more about production cars with "stream lines" curves or bold dials ala a boiler room. - inactive, on 11/17/2008, -1/+13Yet another item I'm putting on my Christmas list. ;-)
- mightyslick, on 11/18/2008, -1/+10Rat rods have been around longer than the phrase 'steampunk'
I take offense as a rat fink fan in the poster saying they are going steampunk
But they are beautiful cars....look up Ole Skool Rodz for more of these wonderful cars. - JohnnyQwest, on 11/17/2008, -1/+9I'd take the spider web one
- decepticrat, on 11/18/2008, -4/+11Huge steampunk fan. I'd buy a steampunk car.
- inactive, on 11/17/2008, -1/+8Nice, not bad at all
- inactive, on 11/18/2008, -1/+8Favorite quote:
Why the primer? Why the raw look? The answer is on one owner’s T-shirt: “Yes, it is cool, and no, I’m not going to paint it.” - bonuscheese, on 11/18/2008, -0/+7This has nothing to do with steam punk, and thankfully so.
- ssquared22, on 11/17/2008, -0/+7Agreed. There's a lot of class in older models and these touches are pretty great.
- louiebaur, on 11/17/2008, -0/+6The one that matches the bike looks cool
- inactive, on 11/18/2008, -1/+7This is where the internet shows its idiot side. Rat Rods have been around since the 1950s at least. ***** you internet. And an even bigger ***** you with all my heart for the dumb ***** who keep submitting things on digg they have no idea about.
- hwy9nightkid, on 11/18/2008, -0/+6these cars aren't even Steam punk... sad
- extravagant, on 11/18/2008, -1/+6real kool
- mitchelwinters, on 11/18/2008, -4/+9Steampunk, everything is going steampunk!!! Yeah
- Zeitgeister, on 11/18/2008, -1/+5They look cool but wouldn't a steampunk car run on steam?
- TubbyCat, on 11/18/2008, -1/+5The unpainted look is great, but what happened to the interior of the second to last one... Pink paint and leopard skins?
- Ricochetbiscuit, on 11/18/2008, -1/+5Love it!
- vroom101, on 11/18/2008, -0/+4All on one page: http://www.popularmechanics.com/automotive/reader_ ... (www.popularmechanics.com/automotive/reader_rides/4291879.html?nav=hpPrint&do=print)
- spaceman84, on 11/18/2008, -1/+5Not steampunk. But it's not as if it matters anyway, because Internet retards have ruined steampunk.
- Nicoon, on 11/18/2008, -0/+3steam punk is not synonymous with rust, you retard.
- hwy9nightkid, on 11/18/2008, -0/+3I'd disagree on them going together, steampunk always reminds me of more industrial/victorian era.. while ratrods ALWAYS remind me of the 50's and wartime
- mightyslick, on 11/18/2008, -0/+3if your talking rat rods then its ' Kool'
- OrangeTide, on 11/18/2008, -0/+3These cars aren't steam punk, and that's a reason to rejoice.
Generally steampunk is a cultural movement that is a cross between goths and cosplay. People hang around in some fantasy neovictorian dress and pretend electricity hasn't been invented yet when they listen to some retro-futurist music with their other nerdy friends.
It's nice to have hobbies and interests, but the kind of people who build rat rods are not the kind of people who would have interest associating with steampunk enthusiasts. - wonderbriefs, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2But nothing about any of them is remotely steampunk.
- dreesemonkey, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2Rat rods have been around for decades and has nothing to do with "steampunk". Just for suggesting it I hope you get punched in the mouth.
- darkism, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2The Thief series was as close as steampunk should've gotten to computers.
- Medicamusic, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2Number 6 is the coolest car I have ever seen. I would love to cruise that thing around and scare old ladies
- OrangeTide, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2rat rods are basically a hot rod that follows function over form. And are also supposed to look like they are continuously in the process of being built. Generally spending less on your rat rod is considered a feature worthy of praise among peers.
- hillbillyboy07, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2No steam punk and hot rod are not similar. Even if you make an argument towards them being similar i would have to say that steampunk should be kept outside of the world of cars. It's nice for art and other things but cars should not be included unless its horse and buggie styled.
- wonderbriefs, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2I don't see anything steampunk about these cars.
- PopcornDave, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1It's for the wife.
- trev0006, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1Those poor muscle cars, please people keep them original.
http://www.dpccars.com/ - OrangeTide, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1plenty of rat rods intentionally have rust. but most of the cool ones are just reddish primer which gets mistaken as rust. The primer no paint look is pretty bad ass if you ask me.
- OrangeTide, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1you should build a "rat" stanley steamer. The 30s to 50s car bodies simply do not fit with steampunk.
A fitting steampunk car would be far more carriage-like rather than having aerodynamic aircraft-like shape. You should consider modeling such a project on turn of the century cars at the latest. Or possibly base it on steam ships used during the American Civil War, which also fits nicely into earlier steampunk ideals.
Rather early, but still interesting would be teh London Steam Carriage. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Steam_Carriage - ledwyn, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1I agree, very kool and ol' skool, but not really steampunk. Jay Leno knows steampunk. Look at his 'Tank car'.
Drawing from the same well...
http://www.popularmechanics.com/powerlist/engines/ ... - OrangeTide, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1no. they are 3-5 decades out of place.
- inactive, on 11/18/2008, -3/+4steampunk is just another stupid subculture. I can't wait for it to die
- Oshi, on 11/18/2008, -1/+2http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rat_rod
- Gemfinder, on 11/18/2008, -1/+2Next up: out-of-the-box steampunk Mac laptop.
[crossing fingers] - pantoneGhost, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1 i would love to see a true steam punk rat rod.
- IRAcarbombs, on 11/18/2008, -2/+3Nothing looks better than flat black and pin striping
- Phasmorphage, on 11/18/2008, -2/+3Am I the only one who thought of GTA Vice City on the 8th picture?
- mmx2000, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1This is one of the worst website's (design) I've ever looked at. Buried for horrible presentation.
- petebot, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Hey! Next time you submit something, make sure the title has something to do with your article. There is no steampunk at all in this article, twatface.
- rugger, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1To me, hot rodding an old car to make it look like an old beat up, rusted out rat rod is kind of like going to the store and buying a pre-torn pair of jeans. Then again, I'm the kind of guy who stresses functionality over style so I probably just don't get it.
