Affordable for who? Bill Gates? Carbon fiber is expensive.- adhavan87, on 06/27/2008, -0/+25It says the price is 20,000USD
- mikem94590, on 06/27/2008, -2/+7$20,000 isn't bad for a new car now, and this one is about 5 times more fuel efficient than some of the hybrid cars available today. For example, to drive from San Fransisco to Los Angeles, California is about 450 to 500 miles. This car would be able to make that trip in a little over 3 gallons. To make that trip in one of today's hybrids would take a bit over 15 gallons of gasoline. So in the year 2012, when gas is at $15 a gallon, this car will save you about $180 making a one way trip from San Fransisco to Los Angeles. While $180 isn't a HUGE saving, all of the little savings do add up, to the point where the car could potentially pay for itself.
- TopherT, on 06/27/2008, -1/+3Well... it wouldn't HAVE to pay for itself if its only 20k$. It would already be the same price point as the less fuel efficient car, so there is a zero wait to return the benefit of higher efficiency.

- Retsep, on 06/27/2008, -2/+4Why is it impossible for green cars to look normal? If these companies would just make an SUV that gets 150mpg they would be rich beyond their wildest dreams. Maybe glorified golf carts will sell in Europe, but I don't think this will go over that well in the US.
- giloron, on 06/27/2008, -0/+8Maybe because "normal" looking cars have horribly inefficient aerodynamics? It's a lot simpler to reduce drag than to squeeze more power out of the fuel to overcome it.
- MarkusX, on 06/27/2008, -12/+3It looks kinda like a undefinable blob, but somehow also very cool and futuristic.
Screw the Prius!
Who in 2012 wants to drive in a car that looks like 2012 if you can drive in a car that looks like 2050 and costs half the price?
I'd buy one just for the looks. Happily in 2012 I've paid off my current Toyota. Hehe!- mywhitenoise, on 06/27/2008, -3/+7I paid $17,500 for my 2005 Prius. Prius don't cost $40,000 you ***** idiot.

- mywhitenoise, on 06/27/2008, -3/+4Why do they blow? And why are the people who drive them morons?
I just don't understand how you could think someone who pays for a car that costs as much (and performs just as well) as a Civic or Accord while saving money on gas and reducing carbon emissions is a moron. Explain yourself. - TopherT, on 06/27/2008, -3/+3Well if you're saying that it will reduce carbon emissions you may be a moron. The high production cost of batteries in material and energy, combined with the continuing use of fossil fuels make cars like the Prius only marginally better than normal cars. A bicycle would be orders of magnitude less carbon intensive. Besides, consumer choices aren't going to make a difference in global warming. Only national and international regulation is going to be large scale enough to have any impact on our carbon emissions.
- mywhitenoise, on 06/27/2008, -1/+4"A bicycle would be orders of magnitude less carbon intensive". That would be a nice idea...if work wasn't 30 miles away, and if I had the strength to ride 200 miles to San Francisco when I want to see a concert. I suppose I could also add a big cart to my bike when I want to take my dog to the dog park, or buy his food and groceries.
"Besides, consumer choices aren't going to make a difference in global warming."
Yes they do. The more people that show interest in hybrids, and the less people that show interest in gas guzzlers leads to more development for more fuel efficient cars. - egoideal, on 06/27/2008, -1/+3mike my parents own a prius and it's a very nice little car. Pussies.- 1randomguyO8, on 06/27/2008, -1/+4You buy one then and when you have a head collision with a 4000lb car hitting you at 60mph tell me how you fare.
- SphinxatUF1, on 06/27/2008, -1/+4Its stupid to compare cowboys on horseback and soldiers to passenger vehicles-- people worry about safety in their vehicles because they're driving their children and families around, not herding cattle or going to war. To ignore safety is to ignore the market you're trying to sell to.
- caninedevotion, on 06/27/2008, -1/+9Did Napoleon worry about how 'safe' it was when he conquered Australia with his army of 6ft clones?

- darkened, on 06/27/2008, -1/+7Uh I'd worry about how safe if it is when it has to share the road with cars that weigh an average of 1.5 tons and their are tractor tailor trucks that weigh 10+ tons.

- MasterPain, on 06/27/2008, -1/+2Thats my biggest concern for cars like this in America. Weighing less than 600 pounds it most will be easily demolished by any SUV & probably even compact cars. Even a little bump would probably send it careening off the road as the tires must be tiny.

- Lucas123, on 06/27/2008, -7/+23I've got three more years of payments on my SUV. Then it's hopefully on to a good, affordable hybrid or best of all, a hydrogen fuel car. Until then, I'm going to have to pay the piper. Besides, hybrids don't save you enough money over the life of the car to pay back the difference in price between them and a gas-only vehicle. The only reason to buy one today is as an ecological statement.
- lettruthout, on 06/27/2008, -1/+19Hydrogen sounds nice until it becomes clear that it is not an energy source but an energy storage medium. Right now hydrogen comes mainly from oil. It's more efficient to use a natural gas car.
I wish I could be more supportive of hydrogen vehicles but they're being pushed by big automakers - the same ones that lured us with other promising technologies just before they changed their minds. Remember the Think cars, Zebra batteries, Partnership for the Next Generation of Vehicles and the EV-1?
In the mean time buy a hybrid anyway. The purchase helps yourself, the environment and the industry - it's a vote for the technology. The more hybrids that get built means that the parts to make them become more refined and cheaper.
It's not an empty "statement" but the way to develop the market. - mizike, on 06/27/2008, -2/+8"Besides, hybrids don't save you enough money over the life of the car to pay back the difference in price between them and a gas-only vehicle"
depends how long you plan on keeping your car....if you're the type that needs a new car every couple of years, then you're absolutely right (although, I imagine the resale value remains high); assuming gas prices remain static you recoup the investment at somewhere around the 8 year mark. If gas prices continue to rise in the way have been lately (which is more and more likely; they'll certainly never significantly drop no matter what any politician tells you), you'll start realizing a return much sooner.... - wolfing, on 06/27/2008, -4/+12That was true when hybrids first came. The price difference was like $7000 and gas was like $2/gallon. Nowadays the difference is more like $3000 and gas is $4/gallon. Just in gas you'll be saving at least $30/week (more in your case since you have an SUV), so about $1500/year. In 2 years you paid off the difference. That's not counting the tax break you get for hybrid cars, and also the implicit benefit of not having to go waste time at the gas station :)
- mywhitenoise, on 06/27/2008, -6/+5"Besides, hybrids don't save you enough money over the life of the car to pay back the difference in price between them and a gas-only vehicle."
haha, yes they do. Especially since gas prices are only going up.
- lettruthout, on 06/27/2008, -1/+19Hydrogen sounds nice until it becomes clear that it is not an energy source but an energy storage medium. Right now hydrogen comes mainly from oil. It's more efficient to use a natural gas car.

- marx2k, on 06/27/2008, -4/+0I'm pretty sure this csar would be easier to pedal to generate power than it would be to push your gas guzzler. Maybe not downhill..
- merreborn, on 06/27/2008, -0/+5Wow, I had a hard time believing that quote was in the article 'till I opened it up and searched.
I'd be interested to see some numbers on just how much power two people pedaling can generate, in contrast with the amount of juice it takes to run a car that big.- TRScheel, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3It'd be staggeringly small. Most cars cruise using about 25000 watts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watt).
Per this quote:
'Thus if an exercise bike registers a 150-watt physical power output it might display 17 kcal/min as the rate of food energy burnt per unit time (since 150 W × 8 = 1200 W ≈ 17 kcal/min).' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_energy)
Dont expect your pedaling power to get you far. - lendrick, on 06/27/2008, -0/+5Enough to move themselves, plus two bicycles, roughly 20 miles per hour.
A bicycle is an extremely efficient use of the energy generated from peddling. If you instead run it through a generator, put it in a battery, then use that battery to power an engine, that's going to generate a lot of heat, which will waste some of the energy you put in. Furthermore, the car adds 600 lbs.
So, picture adding a 600 lb trailer to your bike and imagine peddling it. That's this car in the *best case scenario*.
- TRScheel, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3It'd be staggeringly small. Most cars cruise using about 25000 watts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watt).
- esotericguy, on 06/27/2008, -3/+3you're not going to be pedaling it like a bike. You'd just pedal when the sun isn't out to give it an extra charge, you'd be a fool to wait until you had a dead battery to pedal. Think of it like just charging your phone for 5 minutes every hour and really filling it up when it gets low. THINK BEFORE YOU TYPE!

- rocketman42, on 06/27/2008, -3/+7Yeah, that's ever going to happen. Carbon fiber chassis isn't cheap. It's also listed as 600lbs. Clearly this is without any safety equipment. It's very difficult to get a new car under 2,000 lbs with all the safety requirements. Three to four times the weight will obviously affect the mpg. And don't get me started on the pedals. If anyone knows Hungarian, this is their website:
http://www.solo-duo.hu/- CCB0x45, on 06/27/2008, -0/+6It says 20,000USD and this car is going into production next year, has already been approved for safety regulations(although its classified as a motorcycle, but you dont need a helmet) and will be avilable in cali, and it is lighter:

- rocketman42, on 06/27/2008, -0/+4The car in the article is not going into production next year, they say they are targeting 2012. As for that Aptera thingy, you pretty much made my point for me. It is not a car, it is a motorcycle. One look at the picture should tell you that it doesn't meet CAR safety requirements (bumpers anyone). I believe three-wheeled == motorcycle regulations (not positive). But the Antro Solo (from the article) is a four wheeled car.
Ha, and I'm now seeing that your example is listed as starting at $27,000, which is only 35% more, right?!

- CosmicJustice, on 06/27/2008, -0/+6No
- iqbal55, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1It's all about aerodynamics. The lower the drag coefficient the more efficient the cars is. Why are you people complaining about headlights? Look at the bottom of the A-pillar and you'll see something transparent-ish. That's probably the headlight. Rear view mirrors disturb the aerodynamics so they'd probably put cameras where the mirrors are supposed to be at and display it on screens inside the car. There MIGHT be a trunk. Change the wheels by jacking up the car a bit, d-uh.

- swgc5, on 06/27/2008, -11/+15That thing is ugly as *****.
- tahcoboy, on 06/28/2008, -1/+2You sir/madame are obviously not ready for the future (insert futuristic music)
- nyx210, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3Why is it that almost EVERY electric, hydrogen, solar, etc... car have to look like a pile of *****? I seriously want to see a guy roll up to a chick while driving this.
- trumpcard, on 06/27/2008, -14/+4I think we are going back to the 1920's with these ***** cars with less power, for me power is more important ,call me a jerk but i prefer SUV's,moreover girls love boys driving SUV's .
Thank you.- DiggGeek24, on 06/27/2008, -4/+9So they like guys who buy an SUV to compensate for a small dick?
- trumpcard, on 06/27/2008, -11/+1You=gay.
- mywhitenoise, on 06/27/2008, -2/+6Trumpcard, SUV owner, ignorant, gay basher. If anyone's gay, it's definitely you.
- CosmicJustice, on 06/27/2008, -1/+2How do you know so much about his dick?
- Whaines, on 06/27/2008, -3/+3Why hello there! Welcome to digg Mr. Republican, enjoy your stay!
- marx2k, on 06/27/2008, -1/+2"moreover girls love boys driving SUV's ." Are you just echoing the salesman's pitch there?
- DiggGeek24, on 06/27/2008, -4/+9So they like guys who buy an SUV to compensate for a small dick?
- peticsu, on 06/27/2008, -0/+16cant they make something that doesnt look like some weird sex-toy?
- kolinkoolface2, on 06/27/2008, -4/+4that is the dumbest looking vehicle i have ever seen. I understand they have to be aerodynamic but why so gaudy?
- Technoloki, on 06/27/2008, -0/+16It looks like my computer mouse.
- mikem94590, on 06/27/2008, -1/+2With Lamborghini doors.
- chrgrose, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1I admit the scissor doors are sweet. I thought it looked like a jelly bean at first but the more I think...
- Skeezicks, on 06/27/2008, -0/+6I hope it's a cordless!
- mikem94590, on 06/27/2008, -1/+2With Lamborghini doors.
- fletchsd, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3Did the designer look at his mouse and think "Hey that mouse is a great shape for a car!"?
- scoottie, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3He accidentally went to Logitechs website
- Rysac1, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3I hear we are going to have flying cars soon too!
- PopcornDave, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2That fold up in to a briefcase so you can take them in to your office.
- EASwanson, on 06/27/2008, -2/+4I was thinking yesterday why don't all hybrid cars have solar panels on them? Yes it won't be enough to be able to drive solely off of but it could easily add another 10% to you're mpg. Let's say you go to work and let it sit in the sun for 3-4 hours before you head off to lunch. I'm sure the solar cells could provide atleast a mile or two within 3-4 hours and the beauty of hybrid cars is they already have the batteries.
- PopcornDave, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1It's an interesting idea, but I'm curious how clean you have to keep those panels. What's a solar panel's efficiency with a thin layer of road dust on it?
- richardhammond, on 06/27/2008, -0/+4The future looks crazy. That is one crazy looking car.
- zymosis, on 06/27/2008, -1/+3I don't care who you are, that thing looks hideous.
- marx2k, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1I don't care who you are either, jerk.
- Riversidehomes, on 06/27/2008, -1/+5My problem with it is...will it handle speed bumps?
Why the heck do they do all these CRAZY things to make it futuristic..when if they added solar to a honda civic, made it electric, and carbon fiber then you'd have a car that would be ENORMOUSLY successful! - LunchMoney, on 06/27/2008, -1/+9I would rather have the 300 MPG car!

And it is expected to start production by the end of the year.- blackdude, on 06/27/2008, -0/+5Too bad it:
1) Scares women away.
2) Soccer mom will crush th life force out of you if you're hit.
I'd rather just drive a motorcycle, at least 1) will be fullfilled and 2) you'll have a chance to evade.- shanealeslie, on 06/28/2008, -3/+1I know plenty of hot eco/geek women that would ***** the brains out of a guy that drove one of those - including my wife. What the gearhead losers have yet to realize is that most women worth marrying (in shape, smart, environmentally aware) find guys that are environmentally conscious more attractive than the wasteful polluters that drive porches and muscle cars.
- blackdude, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3"that would ***** the brains out of a guy"
Whoa there buddy, martians don't count :/.
- mike17032, on 06/28/2008, -1/+2Thats about the dumbest looking thing ever.
- chrgrose, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1I used to think it looked like a big throbing cum-ball, but not so much now and the prospect of 300 mpg (or fully electric) and pulling a little switcharoo on the oil companies is enticing.
- blackdude, on 06/27/2008, -0/+5Too bad it:
- uncertain, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2It reminds me of a Seinfeld episode: "It's breathtaking!"
- WheezyMustafa, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1Sometimes we say those things to be nice. :)
- Advenger, on 06/27/2008, -0/+5what happens at the crest of a hill? I love scraping the bottom of my brand new car on the road. Also, consider the other weather conditions (snow) for those who don't live in California. I don't want an artsy car; I want one that works, runs cheap and can take a meteorological beating.
- shadowmoose, on 06/27/2008, -1/+3eeeeeeeewwwwwwww
- virginian9000, on 06/27/2008, -2/+1I applaud their effort, and I am sure if they are successful, they will sell a lot of cars. However, it looks ugly to me.
- EtherGnat, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1I'm sure if they sell a lot of cars they'll be successful.
- swraman, on 06/27/2008, -3/+6cool until you get in a 20mph crash and die
600lbs, come on its a death trap- chrgrose, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1Think of it this way: its probably less risky than a motorcycle.
- trollick, on 06/27/2008, -1/+3I don't want to pay $20,000 for a car that I'll be able to drive only for a few month.
- yikiad, on 06/27/2008, -1/+4and have to pedal....PEDAL??!!
- mr209204, on 06/27/2008, -2/+1Flintstones :O
- franklymister, on 06/27/2008, -0/+4Front page 3 days ago http://digg.com/autos/Antro_Solo_Awesome_UFO_Like_ ...
- scoottie, on 06/27/2008, -1/+3The digg poster only wishes it would come sooner and I only wish it would look half decent so it can be something i would want to drive.
- marx2k, on 06/27/2008, -3/+1The mileage rating makes me want to drive it. It's a car. It's a utility to get you from A to B. Who gives a ***** what it looks like?
- shanealeslie, on 06/28/2008, -3/+1Gearhead losers that think airheaded, silicone plumped women will ***** them if they have a loud flashy car that goes faster than is safe or legal, pounds out music loud enough to wake people up as they drive by, and has neon lights under and flames painted on it. What they don't realize is that those same women gain 200 lbs and don't work after they get knocked up in the back seat of said car.
- mike17032, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2People with taste that arnt too poor to drive something nice.
And yes, having a nice car does attract the attention of hot bitches. Not that you will ever find out, driving your metro. - marx2k, on 06/28/2008, -0/+0mike17032, you are the perfect product of directed automotive marketing. Congratulate yourself.
- marx2k, on 06/27/2008, -3/+1The mileage rating makes me want to drive it. It's a car. It's a utility to get you from A to B. Who gives a ***** what it looks like?
- MikeFallopian, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2I think the #1 way to scare off potential investors for a new auto design has to be saying "oh and look guys! it's even got pedals!!!"
- PopcornDave, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1No, that would be "Oh and it comes standard with an 8-track tape player."
- n1eb, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3Thanks, but if I want to pedal to work I'll get a bike.
