- smacksaw, on 03/03/2009, -10/+3517.2 MPG in 2005.
You'll recall that's almost 4 years after 9/11.
And the auto manufacturers want a bailout now? Why? They never ***** learn. - atomicpoet, on 03/03/2009, -1/+23The DeLorean was such a sweet car.
- SpookyBoots, on 03/03/2009, -3/+23Dugg for In-N-Out being part of automotive history.
- bjzq8, on 03/03/2009, -0/+16Toyota is asking for a bailout in Japan, too...at least their financial arm.
The entire time, since 9/11, GM, Ford, and Chrysler have had high-mileage vehicles sitting on their lots; the Cavalier, Focus and Caliber, for instance...and they haven't sold nearly as well as the lower-mileage vehicles. Perhaps it's because the government didn't appropriately "encourage" people to buy them through taxes, etc, but the cars have existed, and domestic automakers have not found them profitable. Note I'm not saying they've recently found ANY vehicle sales profitable, having built up their corporate structure for a 1999-style market. - TnTBass, on 03/03/2009, -0/+16I especially like the time traveling abilities.
- inactive, on 03/03/2009, -0/+13You car also doesn't break your wrist if you start it wrong, so you know, there have been some improvements made.
- harvinator24, on 03/03/2009, -11/+24I still can't believe GM got rid of the EV1.
Everybody should watch, Who Killed The Electric Car.

Well, looks like the US has been socialist since at least 1921. OMG SOCIALISM - Eternity500, on 03/03/2009, -0/+9Of course your average MPG will be lower when you have everything from super-minis to supercars, an added 2000 lbs in safety equipment, and the ability to do more than 30.
- aguy89, on 03/03/2009, -4/+12Wow my car has the same mpg as the model T. I need to get a new car :(
- linuxpenguin, on 03/03/2009, -1/+9New cars don't always get better mileage - all the crap they put in the car reduces your gas mileage. That's why 25 (or so) MPG is still considered "good" - up until just recently people have cared more about adding features than saving gas, and still there are new safety features that people want even if they don't care about the other extra crap. All that stuff adds weight and complexity, and requires more of your engine.
- brandita, on 03/03/2009, -0/+8Made me want to bust out LIFE. I always hated that wheel...it would never spin quite right.
- Pseudorious, on 03/03/2009, -0/+7This isn't true. The focus has been on increasing horsepower, while maintaining MPG. I consider this misguided, but it's not due to the lack of technological improvement.
- JCEEZ, on 03/03/2009, -3/+9"Bush administration cancels federal program to design a fuel-efficient "super car" after 5 years and more then $1 billion of federal money spent on research."
US car industry pwnd - brandita, on 03/03/2009, -1/+7I could really go for a Double Double right now.
- theexitwound, on 03/03/2009, -1/+7It should be obvious that efficiency has lagged behind every other single technology introduced into the vehicle. Shame, too.
- Nick535i, on 03/03/2009, -2/+8This thing is full of inaccuracies. Buried.
Jeep Wagoneer first SUV my ass. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_Suburban - 1935 bitches.
I could go on a rant, but I think I just lost a turn on my last roll. - HAMM3R, on 03/03/2009, -0/+6The manufacturers make what the buyers buy. No consumers gave a ***** about fuel economy until recently either, so don't pretend it's all the car maker's fault.
- cornelje, on 03/03/2009, -0/+5Just curious what you drive, smacksaw. If its not a bicycle, then you are the one that doesn't ***** learn.
I agree with bjzq8, it is in the auto industry's best interest to produce cars that people want. If people have wanted fuel efficient cars before the latest oil problem, we would have those cars. Don't blame the manufacturers, blame the wants of consumers. - Pseudorious, on 03/03/2009, -1/+6What do the model trees represent?
- BCPneumatics, on 03/03/2009, -0/+5It can probably go a fair bit past 45mph though...
- chronopublish, on 03/03/2009, -0/+5I recently read an interview with a GM executive about the challenges they faced when designing the Volt. When pressed as to why they didn't carry over what they learned from the EV1, he admitted that they no longer had the design documents or really any of the R&D expertise left over from that program. I wish I could cite a source, but I don't remember where I saw it.
- Danltn, on 03/03/2009, -0/+5But they go slightly faster now-a-days. :)
- HurricaneDC, on 03/03/2009, -1/+6I thought the oil barrels were chocolate oreos.
- spthomp, on 03/03/2009, -0/+5The EV1 was fun to drive, quick little thing if you weren't concerned about saving the battery charge. You always got the oddest looks when you were laying rubber down at a stoplight in an electric vehicle.
- inactive, on 03/03/2009, -1/+5It was a pretty influential book.
- ajdelarosa45, on 03/03/2009, -0/+4Well, this does seem to lean a certain way politically... am I supposed to take away from this that you want us to start adding lead again to gasoline to increase mpg's?
- jeffwmartin, on 03/03/2009, -0/+3I thought they were Thin Mints because it's Girl Scout cookie season and they put heroin in the Thin Mints
- cornelje, on 03/03/2009, -1/+4If the EV1 was actually ready to go mass production, don't you think GM would have had the Volt out already rather than, you know, spend lots of money on extra r&d?
I want an electric as much as anyone else, and believe quite a few conspiracies, but the EV1 just doesn't make any sense. - Skurt, on 03/03/2009, -0/+31908: 35-40 MPH
Now: 80+ MPH (YMMV) (I mean come on, a Yugo going 80?)
Still, its 22-horsepower, four-cylinder engine could propel the 1,200-pound car to a top speed of between 35 and 40 miles an hour, adequate for the mostly unpaved roads of the era. Cooling was by the primitive thermo-siphon method, lubrication via a splash system. The gas tank nestled beneath the front seat, its fuel being fed to the engine by the force of gravity. Meanwhile, the driver shifted the two-speed planetary transmission with foot pedals. The car didn't even have demountable rims at first, though in 1919 they became available for an extra $25.
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/1908-1927-ford-model ... - cornelje, on 03/03/2009, -0/+3Yeah, I also saw the picture!
- smacksaw, on 03/03/2009, -0/+3http://www.xe.com/ucc/convert.cgi?Amount=1&Fro ...
That's the problem right there. - jhandfield, on 03/03/2009, -0/+3Try throwing in the extra weight of modern cars, air conditioning compressor, ABS, etc. on a Model T and see what happens to its fuel mileage.
- ontain, on 03/03/2009, -3/+5The fact that technology hasn't advanced so that every new car is more fuel efficient than the model T is pathetic.
- kastlip88, on 03/03/2009, -0/+2It really defined the 80's in my opinion.
- kahn2001, on 03/03/2009, -0/+2I can't drive 55!!!!!!!!! \m/
- ontain, on 03/03/2009, -2/+4faster on more fuel is not really something to be proud of :P
faster on less. now that would be something. - toekneebullard, on 03/03/2009, -0/+2You should look into the history of that book.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unsafe_At_Any_Speed - chevyorange, on 03/04/2009, -0/+2But it turns out, looking back of course, that it was an SUV. Jeez.
- Ymeg, on 03/03/2009, -0/+2The board is inaccurate?
- tgc1, on 03/03/2009, -0/+2Glad i'm not the only one who saw that.
- jhandfield, on 03/03/2009, -1/+3I thought we agreed to never speak of that again?
- minnecrapolis, on 03/03/2009, -1/+3I thought the old geezer remade it as "I can't hoverround over 2mph"
- ajcates, on 03/03/2009, -3/+5Yea because of Ralph Nader we can't have our car windows automatically roll up when we shut off the car. I hate that douche.
- boote, on 03/03/2009, -0/+2Remove your catalytic converter too!
- HypocriteDigg, on 03/03/2009, -0/+2Yeah that's right, because if Clinton had canceled the 'super car' then they would have left it out. Right? Dumbass.
- Tetromos, on 03/03/2009, -3/+51908: 21 MPG
Now: 17 MPG - Phate8263, on 03/05/2009, -0/+1And the stereo, seats,heater,A/C,suspension,steering,cruise-control, sound-deadening,air-bags,emissions,tires,aerodynamics,horsepower,transmissions were all better in 1908 too!!!
