Let's say the mass of the bike and the kid combined is 100kg. This could be off by a bit as the 'bike' looks like it's made out of aluminum and plastic.
Two 20-watt panels will produce 40J/s or 144 000J/h. For a one hour charge, we have 144 000J of energy stored assuming perfect conditions for the solar panels and for the battery.
Using the coefficient of tires on asphalt (0.75) we get the force of kinetic friction to be:
0.75(9.81m/s)(100kg) = 735.75 N.
With 144 000J of charge, running at a constant speed, we get:
(144 000 kgm^2/s^2) / (735.75kgm/s^2) = 195.71m.
Assuming perfect efficiency, this thing won't get one person 200m on a one-hour charge. Including inefficiency and unideal conditions for charging, it will get you even less distance.

At best you're going to expect about 6 hours of peak sunlight, or about 240 watts generated per day before you take into charging losses on the battery. Now, if you intended to recharge a Netbook with this, then good job, it will do that task just fine.

- lurrker, on 06/18/2009, -0/+3You know, you are right, the source article misstates that the solar panels feed the battery (well, technically it does, but as you mentioned, virtually useless). They don't mention the 5 amp charger they charge the thing with when needed. You only find that if you look at the build site. I suppose Gas2.0, and even Wired are glossing over the fact because it's less "groundbreaking", and in Gas2.0's case, against their agenda.
