- maximilen, on 03/11/2009, -2/+28A used Mazda Miata. Cheap, handles like a go-kart and gets 30mpg+. Your sexuality may vary.
- MikeyTwit, on 03/11/2009, -5/+28The Focus? Seriously? Ugly and handles like garbage. The Civic, Fit, and Rabbit are supercars compared to the Focus.
- Bilbobaggins, on 03/11/2009, -3/+23Where is the Bugatti Veyron?
- inactive, on 03/11/2009, -0/+18Please Ford bring us the Euro Focus we need it...
- indigothirdeye, on 03/11/2009, -1/+17Is this an anti-Toyota article? Both the Yaris and Corolla exceed all the cars on this list when it comes to mpg, and fall under the $18k price limit. Although the Mazda 3 is sexier and more fun to drive.
- inactive, on 03/11/2009, -2/+16The Miata is a driver's car for those confident people not reliant on a car to boost their machismo
- MaxxusFlamus, on 03/11/2009, -0/+13most self respecting men have enough self respect to not need a penis enlarger for a car.
- CoD4, on 03/11/2009, -0/+12Believe it or not, the miata IS a true driver's car, someone i know had one and he put a turbo in that thing and it flies, not to mention the handling superb.
But it has those stereotypes associated with it - deadasdisco, on 03/11/2009, -1/+13they probably just felt obligated to put at least one american car on there
- imacmike, on 03/11/2009, -1/+11The other guys are all jealous of me

-Dave Barry - Emachine, on 03/11/2009, -2/+11Dugg for Rabbit.
- flieger, on 03/11/2009, -1/+10People can call me a chick or whatever they want while I enjoy my rear-wheel-drive roadster with 50:50 weight distribution.
- maddskillz, on 03/11/2009, -1/+10It's funny, I always heard good things about the Focus...then I had one for a rental...I agree with what you say
- jpqsat, on 03/11/2009, -0/+9that's 18k total price, not weekly.
- TheThirdLevel, on 03/11/2009, -4/+13Really? Maybe I just drove a dud, but the Cobalt is the worst car I have ever driven.
- garryw, on 03/11/2009, -0/+72009 Lancer is plenty fun, base price 13.5K
- spoofer56, on 03/11/2009, -0/+7What? No Hyundai Elantra?
- smemily, on 03/11/2009, -0/+7snowman's chance in hell... at... what exactly?
- Echosphere, on 03/11/2009, -0/+6But does it have multi-spectrum light emitting diode cup holders? Pfft. Didn't think so.
- xcheats, on 03/11/2009, -1/+7Which is why you should buy new if you can afford it to help support the economy & the jobs who made it.
- flamingchorizo, on 03/11/2009, -2/+8I love my new Nissan Versa. Its a nice comfortable ride and I like that I dont feel like I'm sitting on the ground. I think its a fun ride for the price. Also they didnt ignore me at the Nissan dealership when I came in looking for a new car like the GM dealership did. Kinda funny cause I thought GM needed to sell cars
- fanboydcs, on 03/11/2009, -2/+8I just bought a 2008 brand new United gray Rabbit, its so fun and for the price it comes with sooo much more than any other car.
- inactive, on 03/11/2009, -2/+8It's a recession. Possibly a depression. Buy a used car.
- kazersoza, on 03/11/2009, -0/+6What no Yaris! Love my Nerd Heard mobile.
- Kidddrunkadelic, on 03/11/2009, -0/+6I'd rather spend that 18k on a house in Detroit.
- ionelementz112, on 03/11/2009, -0/+6I would love a Focus RS. Unfortunately, those aren't available stateside.
- IMustBeEmo, on 03/11/2009, -2/+8This list isn't that great, the Ford Focus and the Mazda Miata are complete garbage. Where's the Subaru Impreza and Chevy Cobalt? Also the prices listed are NOT what you actually pay, they end up being closer to $16,000 than what is listed - the Scion and the Nissan are only a couple hundred below $18,000 if you want power door locks and air conditioning. I wish I was kidding when I say that none of the Nissan sedans come standard with ABS... ouch. The Hondas and the VW Rabbit are the only good cars on this list of the 7 that I have seen - I haven't seen the Suzuki though. If you're in the market for this type of car, look at the Subaru Impreza and Outback, Toyota Corolla and Yaris, and Chevy Cobalt as well. I'm in love with the Honda Fit, that car is awesome.
The title isn't so much misleading as the article itself, so I'm not sure whether to bury. - UtahApocalyse, on 03/11/2009, -2/+7I love Scions. The xD however would have fit into this category much better then the xB
- smemily, on 03/11/2009, -2/+7We have an '08 Versa, average around 30-33mpg mixed driving and have gotten up to 38.77 hwy mpg. Love it. No reliability problems and for the price it is really well equipped with the bluetooth, CVT trans, 6 disc mp3 cd changer / subwoofer. The finishes are pretty nice (padded armrests and such) and when you close the door it sounds more expensive than most cars in its class.
And you have to love that even on the base model you get standard side airbags for front and back. In fact the IIHS gave it good ratings for front, side, and rear crashes thanks to low intrusion and injury measures, and standard moving headrests to protect you from whiplash in a rear-end collision.

My only wish is that there is a version of it about 2.5' longer, with a 3rd row of seats, because some of us would like to fit a few more kids in the car but not drive something as big as a minivan. I'd like wagons to come back. - Konrad9, on 03/11/2009, -0/+5Sorry to break it to you, the 3 IS an econobox. A well handling econobox, but still an econobox.
- ronnyek, on 03/11/2009, -0/+5Honestly ford focus mostly has bad stigma here in the states... the RS over seas is a serious beast. Why Ford continues to leave that car for eu and au only is beyond me
- CoD4, on 03/11/2009, -0/+5I bought a 92 camry for 1700 the other day, has 71k miles and runs really well. Going from a manual to an auto is gonna suck but at least the ride is nice.
I can't imagine buying a new car and paying full coverage on it in nyc, i don't know how others who don't make a lot of money do it - lunachique, on 03/11/2009, -1/+6We have a 2007 Fit, and you'd be surprised how much crap you can get crammed into it. One time we got part of a bedroom set from Ikea in there. That included a bed, a table, and two nightstands. The new models have comfier seats, a moon roof, and built in GPS for the same price as the first models.
- Konrad9, on 03/11/2009, -1/+6+1 on the Mazda3. It may not be as fuel efficient as the Fit, but it's a little cheaper (driving off the lot price, Hondas never drive off the lot for as cheap as they claim to be) and much more enjoyable to drive.
My next car probably won't be a 3 since I'm hoping to spend a few bucks more on a Camaro or something like that, but it's a great car.
*edit* The Civic is on this list? Really? Go to a Honda dealership and try to find a Civic for under $18k. If you find more than 2, then you have traveled back in time. - Taiyoryu, on 03/12/2009, -0/+5I'm waiting for the Fiesta.
- willrs, on 03/11/2009, -1/+603-05 vw jetta vr6, i don't care what anyone says, best car for under 15,000.
- smemily, on 03/11/2009, -0/+4My problem with the Miata (depending on model year) is the lack of roll bars. You do not want to roll one of those. Granted you're not likely to roll one with the low center of gravity, but if you do it's preferable not to have your head and neck supporting the car's weight.
- dartman111, on 03/11/2009, -9/+13The Honda Fit is the only one that should be listed. It is slow as hell but it is nimble. The guys from Top Gear love it too.
- kazoomaloo, on 03/11/2009, -0/+4This list just makes me more excited for the upcoming Ford Fiesta, big frown for making us wait a year.
- Echosphere, on 03/11/2009, -0/+4Had the Focus sedan in Maui. We drove that thing around the ENTIRE island and then again. (Imo, the NW part of the island is worse than the road to Hana)
The only thing it had going for it was the independent rear suspension system that was pretty decent on bumps. Thankfully, VW just recently hired the guys that engineered that part....
Sorry, did I mention how ***** it was? - cam0man, on 03/11/2009, -0/+4These are all new cars....
I never understood the 'green' logic. Whether you're buying a car to save money or to save the planet, none of these choices or choosing a hybrid will accomplish those goals.
If those are truely your goals you've already failed by buying a new car, the carbon emissions required to full build and dispose of the old car this is taking the place of will far exceed any emissions savings from driving something with 10 extra mpg.
Just buy a $5k Civic or Corolla. You'd have to drive 100k+ miles a year to warrant any savings on the fuel economy, this car is 10k less, and you re-used an existing vehicle on the roads. Want some sport? Toss on an upgraded suspension and get a manual tranny...you're gold. Buying any new car instantly kills the savings and environmental benefit of hybrids or 'green' vehicles. - deadasdisco, on 03/11/2009, -2/+6not to mention really bad resale value.
- DontDoDrugs, on 03/11/2009, -0/+3but I'm a guy...
- morcheeba, on 03/12/2009, -0/+3All true, of course :-)
... just keeping the fun & performance factor in perspective. - Echosphere, on 03/11/2009, -0/+3How bout a TDI or 1.8T instead? Hmm?
- kDaser, on 03/12/2009, -0/+3Hmmm, there is something strange about the focus write up.... Surprised no one else commented on the copy/paste "oops" on the 2nd page.
- Wrangler76, on 03/11/2009, -0/+3It's also the ugliest.
- Echosphere, on 03/11/2009, -0/+3How about the Audi TT's? They don't seem too expensive used. I've thought about one. Sure, they usually have a ton of mechanical crap to fix, just like my MKIV Golf. Grrr....
- morcheeba, on 03/11/2009, -0/+3Why can't you live in one house, like normal people? You don't need to buy a whole block!
- inactive, on 03/11/2009, -0/+2do they have something under $9000. 15000 is kind of steep
