- Jabrams2, on 11/21/2008, -1/+28ok, I'm not kidding. That Honda concept car, is staring at me, and I'm a bit afraid.
- jaybol, on 11/21/2008, -0/+16thumbnail = stormtrooper mated with a transformer
- Supergliding, on 11/21/2008, -1/+9Once again... Toyota and Honda have to lead the way... CNG !!! At least it's something we could use till new technology is introduced, whatever that technology is. It doesn't take much to convert the current cars to CNG, and CNG is half the price of gasoline, and doesn't have to be imported. Seems like the obvious answer... much smarter than using corn to make ethanol, and screwing up the corn market in the process.
- MidnightRIder77, on 11/21/2008, -0/+7I thought by 'concept' they would mean all new cars. A few of these are just modifications of current models. When I think concept I think Minority Report not Camry.
- solecize, on 11/21/2008, -1/+7Ok- anyone else afraid of the cylon car in the thumbnail?
- deadasdisco, on 11/21/2008, -0/+4the rear end of that honda got goatse'd
- MidnightRIder77, on 11/21/2008, -1/+4The car has a nice profile except rear end scares the hell out of me. Out of place in a profile view and it looks like an action figures chin with the Honda logo embedded from the back.
- MasonZombie, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3They're electric.
- hangglide, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3In countries other than the US (i.e. Australia) heaps of cars run on CNG and you can buy it at virtually every petrol (gas) station. The conversion is simple from a regular car. In Australia the savings to the consumer is about half over regular petrol (gas). The CNG hybrid is cool but not really that "new." It is current technology. Just new to the US.
- Taiyoryu, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3It's because it's a Cylon.
- stuhr727, on 11/21/2008, -1/+4That is an awesome car!! Go Toyota!
- ryananger, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3Yeah, thats definitely the coolest one on the line.
- Jareth86, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3Its too bad these car designs will all be bastardized by the time they hit the street. God forbid our cars have any diversity in the way they look...
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -2/+5The Dodge EV is awesome I want it!
- gambit2121, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3That's because this is an article about the recent LA auto show, not the best concept cars ever.
- WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3The first one on the list (Honda FC Sport) was the only one that was sufficiently sci-fi; everything else was just boring. I'm sure the innards on the others are innovative and all, but goddamn, can we get some new body work? Even the Dodge EV is just not that distinctive looking unless you're a car fanatic. I want all the cool crap the 1970s movies promised us, dammit!
- PacmanMafia, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3THAT JEEP LOOKS SO...not different?
- NathanCH, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2Clarkson would disagree.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2i wish cars actually looked like the concept cars when they finally launch
- thumbwar, on 11/21/2008, -2/+4Those are cool - I saw the Dodge EV yesterday too. That's hot.
- 0crabby0, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2You are ignorant aren't you?
1. Did you know that 50 to 70% of landfill waste is wood-based?
2. Wood gas vehicles produce less CO2 that a Prius Hybrid?
3. It only takes 1 pound of wood to go one mile on woodgas?
4. I don't cut any trees down for my wood, I get it out of my nearby creek(it tends to stack up against my neighbors fence, so I'm helping him out.
5. A gasifier vehicle can run on many different fuels and you cn always put the gasifier on a trailer to put away when regular fuel costs are low.
http://www.gengas.se/Esilämmitys%20ja%20itse%20300 ...
That means fuel costs are less than 1 cent a mile if you bought waste wood(from a lumber yard) at $55 a ton.
You can make a regular beater car with a carburetor(bigger V8 engines run best) into a woodgas car for only about 300 to 700 dollars US.
How much did that electric car you wanted cost?
I've been running on wood gas for 4 months now with no problems(knock on wood). - edealeasy, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2Awesome, i want one!!!
- Bukowsky, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2It definitely wont' be as nice as the LA show.... but I think Detroit will be able to hang, or at least I hope so.
- jordantneff, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2Concept cars just make me angry anymore. You see these cars with awesome and smart designs and the companies never end up making them. They just end up releasing a newer version of last years cars with slight and usually insignificant upgrades.
- ShrimpCrackers, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2Actually according to Wikipedia its still used in some places in China, Russia, and Singapore. I didn't know about wood gas until you brought it up, thanks!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wood_gas - 0crabby0, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2I'm not seeing any wood gas concept cars or trucks.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ag6LoqcVsM
Very disappointed... - mikbunn, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2What would you get if a civic and Samus had a child?
- 0crabby0, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2LMAO
It's burning waste wood not trees. In fact, I've never cut a tree to burn for woodgas(or had anyone else cut down a tree for woodgas).
I get downed trees from a nearby creek(about 600 pounds YTD). Plenty of soggy wood still left in the creek too(if you want some).
My vehicle puts out less CO2 than a hybrid prius and it's filtered and cooled before I burn the gas in my engine.
Didn't cost much to make(less than 1K with the donor truck).
Fuel costs are less than a penny per mile(since my fuel is free).
I can always switch back to gasoline by turning on the electric fuel pump.

Here's an autoclub that drive wood gas vehicles in Europe

Four months so far no probs. - xavyre, on 11/21/2008, -1/+3Major FAIL. Who submitted this, Roadandtrack.com? Pathetic. Buried.
- Nattybumpoe, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2buried for being on multiple pages.
- hendrixlives64, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1someone should tell jeep they need to stop looking to land rovers for inspiration
- KJSatz, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1Honda has made the Civic in a CNG variety for a couple of years now.
- unhg, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1Boba Fett?
- lucutus, on 11/21/2008, -4/+5It'd be nice to see some practical and high performance electric cars from major manufacturers.
- Fartbandit, on 11/21/2008, -1/+2And yet no mention of in my opinion the most beautiful concept car ever designed. The Jaguar F Type...
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_eYVTmZteSfU/R7BXwXmfJYI/AAAA ... - chewties, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1So you like lotus?
- ZeroCubed, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1The Honda FC is sooooo coool. The others kinda suck, look like cars I've seen before.
- jbmcb, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1The Honda Thong is a pretty hot car...
The rest seem to be electric versions of existing cars. Why is that exciting? The TT is nice, though. - ibneihsan, on 12/08/2008, -0/+1Honda's really cool!
- dan222555, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1If those are the 5 hottest concepts than it's a poor year for concept cars. I'll make my judgments when the show comes to NYC in April....but I think its pretty clear that in the midst of all this "green" ***** the beauty of the automobile is being overlooked. 50+ years of car culture in the United States is being destroyed because everyone has their panties in a bunch about the environment.
- 0crabby0, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1The double post is a frequent cookie problem at digg.
I actually live in a large urban area(probably like you).
I just happen to have a nice creek in my backyard.
My vehicle passes my states emissions tests, although they were not sure how to classify it...lol
Wood is denser than you think - a small slab weighs about 10 to 11 pounds.
I use 3 to 4 ledger-sized pieces(but around 3 in. thick) a day.
You can always use untreated wood(like pallets for example).
Used newpapers, junk-mail, gift wrapping, cardboard containers, construction materials- All can be gasified.
The world stopped using gasified wood after WW2, but it still works. - AkronGuy, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1Except that the Honda has no mirrors. I doubt that would be considered road legal.
- i4ybrid, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1The only way these can be the 5 hottest concept cars is if these are the only 5 concept cars. And they appear to be for the LA Auto Show and this site is concerned.
- etx313, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1It's an electric jeep. that's ***** cool.
- dusanmal, on 11/21/2008, -1/+2With these concepts auto manufacturers deserve to go under (yes, even the foreign ones):
Honda FC, Dodge EV - who the hell needs yet another sports car? Where can you drive these to their full potential? Why?
Mini, Jeep - 204hp and 268hp electric motors?! Have the engineers gone insane or they have assigned combustion engine people to design electric powered cars? You can have Mini go sub-3 s 0-60 with less than 100 hp in electric power. If done properly. You can tow 20000 lbs up dirt hill with that much electric power in the Jeep. Why not less powerful electrics with more range and performance that is practically needed on everyday roads?
The only partially sane model is Camry. But it is just Camry with another power-train. Not a truly concept car. - trev0006, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1I love the new Honda FC concept, it looks like it is alive!
http://www.dpccars.com/ - liquisoft, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1I really wanna drive the Mini-E.
That is all. - ShiftyBizniss, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1...looks more like Boba Fett than a storm trooper
- ZeroCubed, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1I know! I've seen so many concepts that I'd kill to have, but they never come out because their designs are too flamboyant and out of the ordinary for normal people *rolls eyes* or at least, that's what I was told.
