money.cnn.com — Prices for late-model crossovers are dropping fast. Kelley Blue Book helped us search out the biggest bargains. It's no secret that used SUV prices have been collapsing as gas prices have shot up. But now prices are dropping for used crossover SUVs, which get better mileage, but are still thirstier than cars.

- leladax, on 07/30/2008, -4/+8they drop for idiots like you to buy.
- oldhick, on 07/30/2008, -0/+1And what do the smart kids drive?
- megamod, on 07/30/2008, -1/+1Smart kids would drive a hybrid or a small car (honda civic). I wonder how quickly the extra gas money you use takes to make up for how cheap it is...
- trying2hide, on 07/30/2008, -2/+4I don't have 4WD but my vibe gets around 30mpg on the highway.
It's roomy and gets great mpg. I wouldn't trade it for the world. - 11b1p, on 07/30/2008, -2/+222 Hwy 16 City... But it's a mercedes yo!
- oldhick, on 07/30/2008, -2/+3Granted they have more room than my motorcycle, but they don't get half the mileage and they're half the fun. But in all seriousness, there are tons of good deals out their for the soccer moms who don't want a mini-van. Now is the time... Remember buy high and sell low.
- balthisar, on 07/30/2008, -2/+0Well, you certainly get better mileage than a diesel Excursion pulling a 35 foot travel trailer, but what happens when you get hit by one on your bike? I guess maybe you should look for one of those "I eat my roadkill" bumper stickers before you elect to be run over by one. Cheers.
- oldhick, on 07/30/2008, -0/+1Certainly there is risk in many things we do. However we can't live our lives in fear. Change doesn't happen by taking the least risky approach.
I have to survive by being aggressive, keeping a clear head, and anticipating what dumb asses like you will do when I'm on my bike. Its a shame people don't drive their cars like that. The world would be much safer.

- oflyt, on 07/30/2008, -2/+1Didnt know the xc90 was a crossover.
- matamoris, on 07/30/2008, -1/+2It's build on a car platform (P2) instead of a truck. That's why it's classified as a crossover. And what a fantastic crossover it is.
- shakabrah, on 07/30/2008, -1/+6if the average driver drives 15,000 miles per year, a person with a 20 mpg crossover uses 750 gallons per year. at $4 per gallon the driver spends $3,000 per year on gas. a crossover discount of $9,000 is like getting three free years of gas, which raises your effective fuel efficieny (in terms of cost) from 20 mpg to 36 mpg.
- shakabrah, on 07/30/2008, -0/+0*effective fuel efficiency over 100,000 miles that is.
- kozEfx, on 07/30/2008, -1/+1I'd rather make this comparison: You buy a car for $15,000 which gets 20mpg and I buy a car for $15,000 that gets 30mpg. I get 10mpg more than you. Simple. That "crossover discount" is only comparable to the person who bought the same vehicle at a higher price (aka sucker). It is not like buying a nicer car at a lower price is going to increase your mpg, no matter how you calculate it.
- crimsonanarch, on 07/30/2008, -3/+1That Kia Sportage looked like pretty good value at only 8.5 grand, and it was one of the more economical to drive too.
- mikecurry, on 07/30/2008, -3/+2Ride a bike FFS.
- airforceteacher, on 07/30/2008, -0/+0So sick of "ride a bike" all the time. I have 4 kids - care to suggest a bike that seats 5? When I don't have to take anything with me, I ride my motorcycle to work, but when you account for tires, that really doesn't save me any money.
I really wish I could buy a roomy vehicle that gets 30+ mpg - when will someone sell it? - skidooer, on 07/30/2008, -0/+1Who has the time? All of my destinations are at least 20 minutes of highway driving away. Google tells me the speed of an average bicyclist is 24 km/h. Therefore, it would take at least an hour to get to any given destination by bike.
When I was visiting a friend in a major city earlier this month we biked everywhere. It was awesome. But back in the real world, we don't all live five minutes away from everything.

- katorga, on 07/30/2008, -3/+3What is even worse is the mileage of your average passenger car these day. 16-20mpg on a behemoth like a Yukon is amazing. 28 mpg highway on a VW Rabbit 2.5L v5 is pathetic. 34mpg highway on a Honda Fit is pathetic. 32mpg hwy on a Ford Focus is pathetic. 32mpg on a Mini Cooper is pathetic. These cars should be getting 40mpg or higher on the highway.
But remember, some people actually NEED full size trucks, minivans, or off road vehicles - put a decent small block diesel in them and they could get better mileage than most of today's passenger cars and have better "truck" performance.- sjaskow, on 07/30/2008, -0/+1I agree completely. My 1976 Toyota Corolla with a 1600 cc engine, a 2-bbl carburator, 4-speed and no engine management computer got 25+ mpg.
- daone, on 07/30/2008, -0/+2This CNN list does not give the specifications of every vehicle listed.
I find it important to know what engine goes with what vehicle.
The Ford Escape fuel economy of 24 city 29 highway is obviously the 4 cylinder, not the V6. - tennova, on 07/30/2008, -1/+1the benz seems to have gotten decent reviews... http://searchautoreviews.com/search?q=2006%20Merce ...
