- thegrantman, on 08/30/2008, -2/+72Why did it take 8 years for him to complete his investigation? I would have brought in the FBI a lot sooner than that.
- shotgunefx, on 08/30/2008, -1/+42Well, a little bit of googling shows that this guy has been saying it for a couple of years and seems a bit shady, for example trying to sell a piece of evidence for $50,000
http://www.zodiackiller.com/discus/messages/27/955 ...- thegrantman, on 08/30/2008, -1/+15So this guy is possibly manufacturing claims against his dead father to score a few bucks? They don't come much lower than that.
- fluxion, on 08/30/2008, -0/+19in fairness, he seems to think his stepfather murdered his mother, so there might be a wee bit of a grudge as well.
but the FBI supposedly confirmed they're testing the DNA evidence provided, so that should pretty much settle it.
- knuckles, on 08/30/2008, -0/+7It didn't take 8 years. He reported Jack in Oct 2000 to the Police but no one was taking him seriously.
- knuckles, on 08/30/2008, -0/+9I watched all the clips from the interview and the guy seems to have been trying to tell people for the last 8 years. Even the news crew states they can't show us the reel that was processed because it shows people that have obviously been murdered. Kinda makes it harder not to believe this kid (40+ yr old kid...)
It's very interesting stuff. If he is faking it then he's setting himself up for some serious failure.

- Qumahlin, on 08/30/2008, -0/+11The issue is that as usual the police didn't take the guy seriously for quite some time as he didn't initially find the evidence and the police weren't just going to search his property for the hell of it.
Sadly when it comes to the police and public tips, they get so many crackpots saying they are the killer, their parents are the killers, their neighbors are the killers that its hard to weed out the real from the fake

- noahgelman, on 08/30/2008, -1/+41That's crazy. I saw several documentaries on the Zodiac Killer murders. I was really interested because mysteries are.... interesting. Anyways, it would be a huge news story if it turns out this guy was the Zodiac Killer.

- OpenRevolt, on 08/30/2008, -0/+30They clearly said in the video that he believed that there were dozens of other murders meaning that he didn't just stop, he just was more smart about it.
Just like with Wayne Gacy, they only know who he killed from the bodies under his house, but the man had moved around a lot during his life.- dancantone, on 08/30/2008, -0/+4"John" Wayne Gacy...not Wayne.

Ol' Johnny Boy!
- dancantone, on 08/30/2008, -0/+4"John" Wayne Gacy...not Wayne.
- BrogMaN, on 08/30/2008, -0/+6Actually it really isn't incredible at all that he stopped, that's one of the main traits that distinguishes a serial killer from just someone who got pissed off and killed a bunch of people. Yeah, It can be said that serial killers are addicted to killing because they are turned on by the experience and have urges to continue killing, but it is not the same thing as a drug addiction. They aren't looking to get a fix every fifteen minutes. They may have murderous urges almost constantly or only rarely, the urges subside or can be easily repressed at first but over time the urges become more frequent and more intense until the only way that they can get rid of them is to kill someone. Once they do, the whole process starts over again. The time it takes for the thoughts to build up again varies greatly between individual killers, it could be as little as a couple weeks or as long as a few years, but every serial killer does have a cooling down period. That's one of the reasons some serial killers are so hard to catch because the killings are so widely spaced apart that police don't realize that they are connected.
Also, once the urges break the threshold it's not like the killer just walks out onto the street and taps the first person they find on the shoulder "Hey mister" *STAB!* (well, the good ones don't at least). The killers may not believe that killing is wrong but they do know that if they were caught they would be punished so usually they plan out their next killing to great detail, stalking their next victim for weeks to find out their habits and when the best time and where the best place would be to kill them.
As for the Zodiac killer "stopping", he may not have chosen to stop at all. One of the most widely accepted theories about why he stopped is that he either died or was thrown in prison for some other charge and they never realized he had also killed a bunch of people.
- Wartyboskfapped, on 08/30/2008, -0/+43Jack the Ripper also just ... stopped.
- Cwolf267, on 08/30/2008, -2/+157I'm a bit skeptical. After a bit of searching on google, it appears that Dennis Kaufman has ill repute in the zodiac research community. He's tried to sell what he claims are pieces of one of the zodiac victims shirts for upwards of $50,000.
Heres a quote from one of the posters, made on November 24th 2006:
"Dennis Kaufman is a conman, nothing more. He has some sort of axe to grind with his stepdad, which is why he's accusing him of being Z. The first clue that he's full of it is the fact that he tried to sell a piece of what he claimed was Stine's shirt to Tom for $50,000; I've seen the e-mail, and Kaufman has spent the last several years denying that fact. It only goes to show that he's trying to make money on this but otherwise has no interest in the case; the fact that he wanted to sell a phony piece of Stine's shirt instead of turning it over to the authorities speaks volumes.
The second clue is his baseless claim that his stepdad murdered his mother; I have a copy of her death certificate, and it shows that she died at the UC Davis Medical Center of cardio respiratory arrest due to anoxic brain injury due to respiratory failure due to autoimmune cholangitis. In other words, she died of natural causes due to the rare disease she had. True, she was only 50 years old, but people can die of natural causes at any age.
Dennis Kaufman is not to be taken seriously. Law enforcement obviously doesn't, or they would have arrested Jack Tarrance for the Zodiac murders years ago."- gllopc, on 08/30/2008, -17/+8Why do you have a copy of his mother's death certificate? You found that while googling, or you really have a physical copy of it?
I started out reading your post thinking that you just did a little research after reading the article, but the birth certificate comment makes me think that you have more at stake in this.- Cwolf267, on 08/30/2008, -1/+21What's in the little quotation marks (They look like this " ") are said by the person I'm "quoting" meaning that they would be the ones who may or may not actually have a copy of said birth certificate, not me.
- OpenRevolt, on 08/30/2008, -0/+11Its a quote from a post on a zodiac killer fan club site.
- gllopc, on 08/30/2008, -2/+38@Cwolf267: I, sir, am an idiot. You properly left the last quotation mark for the end of the entire quote, and when I didn't see it at the end of the first paragraph, I assumed it was now your comment.

- Krosm, on 08/30/2008, -4/+8Seems sort of weird that just a couple sentences apart are these two statements:
"It could be a knife he BBQd with, or killed someone with"
and
"I developed some gruesome pictures and they are of people he murdered"
Ooooookay. So while there's photos of dead people floating around your house, you're not totally freaking out about it and instead make sure to provide a back out plan by positioning your statement about the murder weapon as possibly being used to cook up some tasty chicken instead. Its one or the other. Killing-death-murder, or delicious BBQ.- disappointed, on 08/30/2008, -0/+2"Its one or the other."
It can be both. - Krosm, on 09/22/2008, -0/+0Sure, but that's not the main point here, is it?
- disappointed, on 08/30/2008, -0/+2"Its one or the other."
- thekippler, on 08/31/2008, -0/+1The often over looked aspect is the mathematical theme to the Zodiac events. Crazy or not, the killer was a crypto-cypher genius. No suspect to date (Arthur Leigh Allen, Jack Tarrance, et al.) has had the mathematical wherewithall to write cyphers, using a binary-morse code, or even know what a radian is. But there is one guy out there(actually living and breathing and not conveniently dead) who has the education, the background(a Berkeley professor and former architectural draftsman) and has had the charge of being the Zodiac leveled against him for years and has never done anything about it.
If someone published a book about YOU that claimed you were a murderer, wouldn't you sue the bejesus out of them? Don't you wonder why Michael Henry O'hare has not?
Welcome to the rabbit hole... - rrand, on 09/04/2008, -1/+0I saw the email too. The 'offer' was during a heated argument, and it was obviously not a serious offer. $50,000 for a piece of shirt? - AuriniDMJ, on 08/31/2008, -0/+1And what exactly is your point? More stuff I own breaks due to accident than is ever stolen, but for some reason the stolen stuff ticks me off a bit more...
- TheMachine1, on 08/31/2008, -0/+1Thats true but a malfunction in a person be he a serial killer or old guy in a car is the equivalence of a system breaking down. Its the belief in free will thats makes us think there is a difference.

On another note, isn't it sad how the sinister effect of the "All work and no play..." post is greatly diminished in this day and age, as nobody uses typewriters any more, and achieving the effect is as simple as one Ctrl-C followed by a number of Ctrl-Vs? I mean, if I discovered somebody's word processor window filled up with a bunch of that, I'd head-slap the guy and tell him to quit screwing around and get back to work.- granolajoe, on 08/30/2008, -3/+8Way to ruin the joke with pedantic observations, and the trite use of "bitches" after an expression
- robdiggity, on 08/30/2008, -1/+8Way to eat my balls with a lunchroom spork. Missing a single tine.
Seriously though, the point was that spine tingling horror has to adjust with the times just like everything else. King's use of that reveal of the "All work and no play..." bit was perfect to demonstrate that madness had settled in. The same device just wouldn't work as well (or at all) today. - magus_melchior, on 08/30/2008, -0/+2Well, the xscreensaver version of "aLl work and no playy" includes random typos and other typewriter-like effects, for what it's worth.
Even if it's a machine tapping out the sentences ad nauseam, the effect is somewhat similar.
And the same scene wouldn't work on its own; if the whole movie was viewed, we would see the scene in its time context. I think it'd still work. Thing is, it's been parodized to literary purgatory and back, most famously by the Simpsons.
The current-gen equivalent may be a hacker filling up his screen with the phrase using xscreensaver code... then the screens of his coworkers and bosses, then customers' screens... Camera returns to the hacker's cubicle, and he is missing but several programs are going nuts on the screen.
It'd still be a comedic parody, but a peek into that character's mind.

I'm willing to bet he took 8 years to write a book not to investigate and If this is all true and his step dad is the killer he's going to make millions off the lose of others loved ones. If the evidence comes back and links his step dad to it all I would sue that bastard for making us waiting 8 years and make him penniless before he can make any money off of the lose of others.

I'm pretty sure he didn't just stumble upon it all at once like last week. I'm sure he's had most of it sitting in his own lap for most of that 8 years.
The PA box is just a nail in the coffin but with all the other clues (the taped recording, the composite, hand writings) why did he wait till now even. And he had the other stuff probably in 2006 (pics knife) still, why the wait.
Look If I walked in the police department with a tape recorder, a composite with a picture of my step dad, and the hand writing comparisons and told them I think my step dad is the Zodiac killer I'm sure they would have came running for such a high profiled crime.

So the guy finds a KNIFE (with blood on it), a hood and photo's --> but he has only turned over the hand written letters and envelopes over to the FBI (that were NOT contained in the PA box)?
Can i infer that the knife, hood and photos were all bogus and rejected by the FBI?
Second point, when a month ago he first found the PA Box containing all this stuff the interviewer asks him "who was the first person you called?"
he replies "Steve"
interviewer "Steve from the FBI?"
he replies "no steve my book publicist"- sweetbean, on 08/30/2008, -0/+10"no steve my book publicist"
dead ringer. - fireashes, on 08/31/2008, -0/+1Arthur Leigh Allen is his step father. seems like a new bigfoot story to me.
- sweetbean, on 08/30/2008, -0/+10"no steve my book publicist"
- rowlodge, on 08/30/2008, -1/+2that hood just made me think that this guy must of thought he was some sort of super hero with a superman logo, killing these people.
- eselet, on 08/30/2008, -1/+6I wonder how he got his stepdad to write the sample text.
Sounds like a hoax to me- innovati, on 08/30/2008, -1/+1he explains that he found words in various letters his dad wrote to him over the years, and compared those instances with words from the zodiac letters.
I'm trained in typography and design and I'd LOVE to have a closer look at this because I have a very high sensitivity to this sort of thing.
I would be shocked if the handwriting *wasn't* him, it would be very very odd if he both fit the description of the killer, had the means to do it (wasn't in europe the whole time) and had similar writing but wasn't.

- Nerolus, on 08/30/2008, -3/+22Here's his myspace. As you can see, he has no friends.

- SpectralSounds, on 09/02/2008, -0/+1la-la land?
- AxYoung, on 08/30/2008, -2/+4Why was this guy able to do an eight year personal investigation and just now, he is handing stuff over to the FBI? If I found a knife with red stuff all over it, I'd call the police immediately, instead this guy just put it back in the bag.
- stranglethorne, on 08/30/2008, -0/+6no he didn't
he had suspected his father to be the murderer for 8 years
it wasn't until very recently he found the box containing knife, hood, photos in it.
- stranglethorne, on 08/30/2008, -0/+6no he didn't
- AxYoung, on 08/30/2008, -0/+6Also, read this:
http://www.zodiackiller.com/discus/messages/27/786 ... - scarletspidah, on 08/30/2008, -1/+4Seems a little dodgey. Really...strange that police didnt take the hood or knife.
"Oh, you've got handwritting and pictures? No, we'll take those instead." - diggonit, on 08/30/2008, -2/+5You have to wonder what people like this guy and the bigfoot guys were thinking when they go public with fake evidence that they know full well will be discovered to be fake .. or do they? Maybe thats it. They are so delusional that they think the fake evidence will actually pass. It's like they have lost touch with reality.
- circaxxxx, on 08/30/2008, -3/+4developed pics or it didn't happen.
- kurotenshi, on 08/30/2008, -0/+9He seems to have just released a video trailer for an upcoming documentary...today??

this is just strange, or opportunistic. - DulcetTone, on 08/30/2008, -0/+9One thing is definite: the sound mixer for this interview should be brought in for questioning and charged with incompetence.
- presage, on 08/30/2008, -1/+2He will get you in the night, and he'll take away your life.
- Coolkid11, on 08/30/2008, -0/+3I've been following the Zodiac Killer's case for awhile. I actually came to believe that is was Jack Tarrance when viewing his stepson's website a few years back.
- dOOBiEx213, on 08/30/2008, -0/+1Same here. Was this after watching the 2005 movie? :D
- DaviDTC, on 08/30/2008, -0/+1I live in Napa which is right in the middle of all of this. I wasn't alive then, but both my parents were. This is really interesting stuff to hear right now.
- shroom, on 08/30/2008, -0/+3Lol, Kris Pickel.
- crestfall, on 08/30/2008, -0/+1If i have a daughter, her first and middle names are good to go.
- borg357, on 08/30/2008, -0/+4Something is weird here... He finds the knife with blood still on it (check), gruesome photos of hacked up dead people (check), and a stash of articles and hand written letters about the murders and such (check)... And the KEY piece of evidence is a black piece of cloth??? WFT?
For a second there, I thought that this was a Simpson's episode. - TitanX7, on 08/30/2008, -4/+14The search for this guy for 50 years and yet they won't take ten minutes to find out who killed Tupac or Biggie.
- EarthernJar, on 08/30/2008, -0/+16... and isn't there some Bin Laden dude they're supposed to be looking for?
- mblejer, on 08/30/2008, -0/+8OMG!! Bin Laden was the Zodiac!
This changes EVERYTHING!
- mblejer, on 08/30/2008, -0/+8OMG!! Bin Laden was the Zodiac!
- holygram, on 08/30/2008, -4/+1I'm tired of this type of *****.
You think someone came up to him and said "hey, would you rather find Bin Laden or the Zodiac Killer?"
Probably not. - paulmer2003, on 08/30/2008, -0/+2Afaik, it was Orlando Anderson who killed 2pac.
- Ebulating, on 08/30/2008, -0/+6The main reason tupac's and biggies murders haven't been solved is that NO ONE involved would talk to police. Gangstas don't cooperate with cops, they settle things "on the street".
- EarthernJar, on 08/30/2008, -0/+16... and isn't there some Bin Laden dude they're supposed to be looking for?
- RgyaGramShad, on 08/30/2008, -2/+15his name is robert paulson
- Straylit, on 08/30/2008, -8/+3***** you! Two of my frien... Oh nevermind.
- uthallan, on 08/30/2008, -3/+1Dad?
- jlakser49, on 08/30/2008, -2/+1ok what about the guy Jake gyllenhall was convinced is the killer from the movie??? is this the same guy?
- Kanten, on 08/30/2008, -1/+3No, that was Arthur Leigh Allen. And until the evidence here is actually confirmed, he's still #1.
- Syphon8, on 08/30/2008, -0/+2Arthur Allen was pretty much confirmed to not be him.
- Kanten, on 08/30/2008, -1/+3No, that was Arthur Leigh Allen. And until the evidence here is actually confirmed, he's still #1.
- SparkMoVement, on 08/30/2008, -2/+2im not 100% positive but Ive researched the zodiac killer for many school reports and he is actually one of my favorite serial killers, based solely on how clever he was.a But, if im not mistaken the son wrote a book a few years back, got some Tv attention, got some DNA tests done and found out it wasn't him.....could be a completely different instance, but def a case of deja vu' reading this....Ive thought this since i first read about the zodiac and it was the person that the person above me was talking about..it was Arthur Leigh Allen, come on, the dude said he was gonna run around killing teenagers and calling himself the zodiac, to family members years before the first killings.....now, Ive joked around before like that but damn, thats some coincidence
- bownasterm, on 08/31/2008, -0/+1they cleared ALA on dna
- wesdenton, on 08/30/2008, -0/+3Seems kind of odd to me. The Zodiac killer didn't get caught for 40 years and then some guy pulls out a bunch of undeveloped photos, a knife and handwriting. The Zodiac didn't get caught because he didn't leave evidence. Didn't they even have the guy who survived the lake killings come and say it was Arthur Leigh Allen?
- exomni, on 08/30/2008, -0/+7I like how when I click the video to watch the segment on the discovery of the Zodiac killer's knife, they give me an advertisement for... kitchen knives... really.
- JackSrenton, on 08/30/2008, -0/+2Oh yay, Only in my area.
Would a guy have a haircut like that..
:-P - Riggo, on 08/30/2008, -0/+2Interesting story....Now, we wait for the evidence to come back.
