Bacon. - warp99, on 07/13/2009, -6/+107There is a correlation between obesity rates and the introduction of high fructose corn syrup based products in the mid 1970's:
http://www.diabetesdaily.com/edelman/2009/05/12/ob ...
As always correlation does not always imply causation, but it makes you wonder who is the real culprit. - barth2k, on 07/14/2009, -0/+55I have a radical theory: Americans are fat b/c we eat so much. And we eat so much b/c we have so much to eat so cheaply.
When you go to Europe and Japan, you realize how cheap food is in America. Food is much more expensive elsewhere, and the portions you get at restaurants are much smaller.
A lot of it is just we have lots of arable fertile land and our agro and livestock business is on steroid (or rather, growth hormone and antibiotics). In addition, we have heavy farm subsidies. Results: lots of cheap food, though not necessarily healthy or tasty food. If you ever go to France, try some butter and see how much better it tastes.
One thing we can do is stop subsidizing corn and sugar. Why do we subsidize stuff that are literally killing us. - densetsu23, on 07/13/2009, -1/+54What I find really entertaining is that clothes manufacturers are changing their sizes.
I'm an XL, plain and simple. But now several brands have changed their measurements, and now I have to buy a large with them. Hell, in Wal-Mart's generic brand I'm a medium. With a 39" waist, there's no way I should be a medium, but I am. - redcolumbine, on 07/13/2009, -1/+44"Eatertainment." I was calling it "recreational eating" - consuming food that contains more detrimental than helpful ingredients, for pleasure - but "eatertainment" will do.
- jrhelgeson, on 07/14/2009, -2/+39Americans are so rich that even the poor people are fat.
- phschris1, on 07/14/2009, -0/+33This really pisses me off...I am a guy 5'9 145 and i get pissed every time I go the mall and there are no ***** mediums! L L L XL XL XL XL XL XL XL XL XL XXL XXL XXXL XXXXL....*****.
- wrathchilde, on 07/14/2009, -3/+35True, sort of. but, not all calories are created (or digested) equal:
http://www.westonaprice.org/modernfood/highfructos ... - warp99, on 07/13/2009, -3/+33Well, your mother likes food. She took to my "tube steak" pretty good Trebek!
- Haoie, on 07/13/2009, -0/+29Much of the rest of the western world's also catching up. Not a good sign!!
- kakwakas, on 07/14/2009, -0/+28Fun fact: While the US tops the world in obesity, the UK actually is #1 as far as being overweight goes.
- A5204, on 08/13/2009, -1/+27I'll take food for $200, Alex.
- Bkkgnar, on 07/14/2009, -2/+23I'm not fat.
- SamSks, on 07/14/2009, -0/+18Can't remember where I heard this ....
A comparison was done between the Better Crocker cookbook from the '30s and the one that came out now. In a nutshell: portions are larger and we're eating much more meat. Back in the old cookbooks, there were more beans and vegetables in the recipes.
Then there is the fact that we're all working at desks in our cubes. Back in the '30s, most of us were doing hard manual labor.
So, in effect, I'm agreeing with you. There are many different reasons for our increasing girth. - WhoRadley, on 07/14/2009, -0/+18This is the best XXXL ever!
- twiztidsinz, on 07/14/2009, -4/+21That's like saying saturated, unsaturated and trans fats are all the same.. since they're all essentially fats.
- JigoroKano, on 07/14/2009, -0/+17Most people aren't athletes.
- Suzilla, on 07/14/2009, -1/+17There is corn syrup (often the high-fructose kind, but other forms, too) in nearly every processed food found on grocers' shelves. If you're not eating fresh (or frozen) vegetables, meats, etc, you're eating sugar, even when you don't think you're eating sugar.
I posted similar comments in the past, and someone once retorted "Oh yeah? There's no corn syrup in (canned) chicken soup." Wanna bet? Try finding a canned soup of ANY kind that doesn't have this in it.
We're fat because we're being fattened up. Read the labels. Avoid the sugar -- and the salt -- and watch the weight drop. - LonelyTylenoL, on 07/14/2009, -0/+16You just won the internet today.
- Lavarock, on 07/14/2009, -0/+15Mostly the problem is the corn subsidy which makes it cheap as hell, so it gets put into EVERYTHING in ***** droves.
- c010rb1indusa, on 07/14/2009, -2/+17The free market, supply and demand, high fructose corn syrup, hormones, laziness...there are many reasons
- yocouchdigga, on 07/14/2009, -0/+14we are so fat because we can be.
/thread - Barackalypse, on 07/14/2009, -1/+15I'm much more interested in why we're so stupid.
- mface, on 07/14/2009, -0/+14Everything's bigger in America
- mongo25, on 07/14/2009, -2/+16I agree, can't blame an ingredient, but to say HFCS is the same as sugar shows how you're misinformed.

In my travels abroad, other countries aren't getting off their asses more. France really blew me away. I had a hard time finding any breakfast that wasn't a sugar loaded pastry or soaked with cheese. I didn't see a single Parisian exercising in my 2 weeks there. My wife and I walked up to the Eiffel tower's first deck and she had no problem quickly passing by all of the teenage Parisian boys on field-trips up the stairs as they were wheezing. Yet they are leaps and bounds thinner in general. Why? They ate fresher ingredients. Few fast food chains. People were less stressed. The American diet is too cheap and too convenient. In general, many people in the US, are too lazy to learn how to cook simple dishes for themselves, deferring to fast food or microwaveable dinners instead. - h8red42, on 07/13/2009, -3/+16as a XXXL man this is not news.it is something to think about as i try to go out walking,oh wait there is something good on T.V.
- kartman2001, on 07/13/2009, -2/+14I like to think that especially in the south you can by fat fried in fat.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fat_back - nosecohn, on 07/13/2009, -1/+13Yeah, I've noticed this too. I'm a thin guy, but I'm tall, so I usually buy a medium or large. When I try on shirts (only in the U.S.), I feel like I'm wearing a tent.
- LonelyTylenoL, on 07/14/2009, -0/+12I'm going to put this out there since it's the appropriate time:
SCREW ENERGY DRINKS
GO TO BED ON TIME - bdbr, on 07/14/2009, -1/+12BMI is probably fine for averages, since it applies to people who don't do heavy exercise. It just works very poorly when applied to the individual.
- Recluse84, on 07/14/2009, -0/+11***** amen.
Is it because those sell the most, or that manufacturers make the least of them? Its the same way with my jean sizes. - ifruit, on 07/14/2009, -1/+12Dollar menu, nuff said.
- aufte, on 07/14/2009, -1/+12Because instead of taking the soda machines out of your kid's schools you spend all your energy on taking cigarettes as far away from kids as possible. Nevermind that smoking rates have been going down since the 60s, and obesity has been on the rise. Pepsi machines have to stay!
- SamSks, on 07/14/2009, -0/+11I'm short and relatively thin - 5' 7" 155lb ish (31" waist) with broad shoulders. I'm having to buy more and more mail order. Most of the clothes in local stores for small guys like me, if they carry them, are for fat guys.
I may have to move to womens clothes if this keeps up. My wife says skirts are much cooler in the Summer - I DO have the legs for it. - LonelyTylenoL, on 07/14/2009, -0/+11Poor educational system (truly) only focused on better test scores.
As the saying goes, "Education is the not filling of a bucket but rather the lighting of a fire."
But there are too many idiots in education that only think filling buckets will help the up-in-coming generation lead positive and successful lives. - hpodity, on 07/14/2009, -0/+11Ridiculous! ...It's the crab people
- Pother, on 07/14/2009, -0/+11Milo Bloom had it right when he suggested to Opus...
"How about eating less, and getting some exercise???"
Opus said,
"NAAHHH!!!"
...and proceeded to try yet another fad diet... - Leo21k, on 07/14/2009, -2/+13I've always felt that most people who are really overweight are that way because of emotional problems... I mean, you would have to hate yourself to do that kind of damage to your own body. It's like committing a slow suicide with food as your weapon.
- RockeN5, on 07/14/2009, -1/+11Drive into any American city and all the fast food restaurants should be a clue.
- inactive, on 07/14/2009, -1/+11Poor people in general are fatter. Why?
Because it's cheaper to eat at fast food restaurants: 89 cents for a double cheese burrito at Taco Bell, for one, and carb / fatty foods are generally less money. More expensive foods which are healthy are more expensive. Go to the Grocery Store. The outside perimeter is healthy, and more money, the inner aisles are cheaper and less healthy.
And, we have access to such foods. The rest of the world is rich in open air markets with healthy food which is cheaper.
Of course, Americans work more hours and vacation less so stress levels are higher, and we tend to feed our stress with junk food. If we were more like Europeans, we would have more vacation, less work hours, and in general would be healthier and thinner.
It's our culture. Sad, but true. - LostOutEast, on 07/14/2009, -1/+11While I agree that BMI isn't a great method to use, it still shows how much bigger Americans are getting.
- MrOminous, on 07/14/2009, -0/+10Try looking for Smalls...
It's IMPOSSIBLE. - MikaStar, on 07/14/2009, -0/+9Actually I was just thinking how pretty stupid your comment sounds.
- ennuisquared, on 07/13/2009, -6/+16Americans are fat, especially here in the south, where even the stop signs are deep fried. I think stress and depression play big roles in obesity. I mean, the term "comfort food" speaks for itself. However, I believe that people are becoming more aware that they need to start eating right and exercising, as our media showcases, even sensationalizes obesity and its dangers, well except for Oxygen:
http://dyao.oxygen.com/ - NoodlePDX, on 07/14/2009, -13/+23Buried for using BMI as a fitness indicator.
- orville1151, on 07/14/2009, -1/+10Actually, you would probably lose weight eating *****.
After your body has processed your food, most of the useful calories have be removed.
***** is probably a low calorie food. - TheAirLoom, on 07/14/2009, -2/+11Because most of them eat nothing but *****.
- chabs39, on 07/13/2009, -1/+10I have the same problem. I am about 6'2" and I have pretty broad shoulders and chest but am pretty thin overall. So I would like to buy a shirt that is a bit bigger but I can't find anywhere that sells a large that doesn't assume you are fat. Whenever I try on a large it feels like I'm wearing a dress because it billows out at the bottom. If I wear a medium though it is too tight in the shoulders and chest and I look like a douche trying to show off my muscles by wearing a shirt too small.
