- ParadiscaCorbas, on 11/10/2009, -2/+46I read recently that this is because of the social roles men and women are most frequently ascribed to.
Women are set up to be nurturers and caretakers, so it's just The Same Only More So if they have a partner with cancer.
Men are set up to be problem solvers and fixers. So a partner with cancer is an immediate frustration point for them; to be confronted with something they can't solve or fix (and for that matter, neither can medical science all the time). So some men*, in this situation, turn their backs and seek situations where their fixing and problem solving skills will actually accomplish something.
* I place emphasis on SOME MEN.
I once had a customer call me asking how to operate his cable.
His wife had been the one to handle it, but she had recently died of cancer.
He and she had been high school sweethearts -- lovers from their teen years, and the man I was speaking to was now about 74 years old.
He sounded heartbroken, and went on to tell me that it was the most painful experience ever to see the love of his life in pain, and suffering, and not only could he do nothing to take her pain away, but he couldn't even hold her hand to remind her he was there, because just touching her hand made her pain worse.
So even though he was frustrated and upset he couldn't solve her problem or take away her pain, his love kept him at her side until her last breath.
He said that she was his partner, his best friend, and he was like a lost puppy without her.
That story reminds me that true love exists, and statistics can't quantify it like they can so much else. - Lavarock, on 11/11/2009, -9/+45No. *****.
How do you get all his money if you up and leave all of a sudden? - sinurgy, on 11/11/2009, -0/+25You know I'm working real hard at building an emotional wall here, I don't appreciate you trying to ***** that up!

- faizal5k, on 11/11/2009, -6/+14Reminds me of McCain.
- ConfirmedCynic, on 11/11/2009, -2/+10Funny how no one is giving the maligned Y chromosome credit for the "build all of civilization" gene.
- Sutley, on 11/11/2009, -1/+8Spoken like someone who genuinely understands how the world works.

- Ceryn1126, on 11/11/2009, -3/+8Great... He can share it with John McCain. Seriously though, congratulations on politicizing something that isn't even remotely related to politics.
- Lavarock, on 11/11/2009, -0/+5Burn in hell.
- Bean888, on 11/11/2009, -0/+5This is worthless without other breakdowns, for example, age, income and educational levels.
- Bigbro69, on 11/11/2009, -0/+5My father got diagnosed with cancer, and my mother stayed to look after him, however hard it was on the family both mentally and financially. Now she's been diagnosed with cancer as well, so they're both taking care of each other. I don't think my father could abandon her after the way she cared for him.
- RobotBuddha, on 11/11/2009, -0/+4All it takes is being one of those it happens to in order for your trust in people to be seriously wrecked. Nothing like being bedridden, unable to walk, and then have the supposed love of your life come in and mention she's leaving you because you're just not any fun anymore.
- RobotBuddha, on 11/11/2009, -0/+4Men are more likley to take 'any' risky action. There's bad in that, violent crime. But also good, being more willing to rage against injustice.
- pintomp3, on 11/11/2009, -0/+4Gingrich is a whole new level of douchebag:
But the most notorious of them all is undoubtedly Gingrich, who ran for Congress in 1978 on the slogan, "Let Our Family Represent Your Family." (He was reportedly cheating on his first wife at the time). In 1995, an alleged mistress from that period, Anne Manning, told Vanity Fair's Gail Sheehy: "We had oral sex. He prefers that modus operandi because then he can say, 'I never slept with her.'" Gingrich obtained his first divorce in 1981, after forcing his wife, who had helped put him through graduate school, to haggle over the terms while in the hospital, as she recovered from uterine cancer surgery. In 1999, he was disgraced again, having been caught in an affair with a 33-year-old congressional aide while spearheading the impeachment proceedings against President Clinton.

- EnergyEinstein, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2Thanks, that cheered me up some.
- RobotBuddha, on 11/11/2009, -2/+3>That story reminds me that true love exists, and statistics can't quantify it like they can so much else.
How can't they quantify that? Seems fairly simple. Didn't they pretty much do that in the linked article? - thatruth101, on 11/11/2009, -1/+2amen to that. I suppose this article only applies to men with a lot of money, since she's not going to take the burden of working AND taking care of you. Women are like leeches, when they are full they fall off. Put any average stay at home wife in this scenario and the relationship won't last long once SHE has to work and take the burden you've taken your entire life. If you're not married, definitely don't count on her staying til the bitter end.
One has to realize that the traditional social roles of a man/woman are made to benefit the woman with the least amount of effort on her part. - happyimbecile, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1@rpgmakr -- well you're right about one thing. *clicks thumbs down image*
- thatruth101, on 11/11/2009, -0/+0most people are moronic savages that deep down don't give a damn about anything but their wants. if the closest person to you in the world can do that to you, then obviously you're correct for having trust in people wrecked. after all, if they don't give a damn why would any one else?
- dwright99, on 11/11/2009, -3/+3McCain? Reminds me of Newt Gingrich.
- rpgmakr, on 11/11/2009, -1/+1I know I will get dugg down for this but Dawson's Creek is the best teen drama TV show to have ever graced TV.
- ell0bo, on 11/11/2009, -2/+1how much you can trust them is inversely proportional as to how far you can throw them (note... because I get yelled at when saying that in public, i don't condone actually hitting women... although they may really ***** deserve it)
- thatruth101, on 11/11/2009, -1/+0 there is no such thing as true love. you're probably young, so I'll excuse your comment. but once you've been around the block a few times it gives you wisdom only experience can get you. It's like how a child doesn't know whats hot, and you can be pretty sure that once they accidentally burn themselves they LEARN and adjust their behavior accordingly. It's human nature. the more you get burned, the more sets of rules you write to keep it from happening again.
I've heard the whole regurgitated 'with that attitude it's no wonder why'. attitude and truth are 2 different things. It's not an absolute truth, but it is truth of the majority. your regurgitated saying puts all of the blame on who you're saying it to, but none of the blame of the significant others of that person. You can't fully know a person in any fixed amount of time. It's main purpose is just to try and make people think positively, nothing more. It's no different than religion spinning off death as 'being in a better place'. Thinking positively too much can ruin you and really make you ignore tell tale signs. It's not as if people are going into relationships thinking negatively.
In conclusion, **** happens, and we learn to duck as best we can. - yesterday00, on 11/11/2009, -2/+1You guys must meet some pretty horrible women. But with that attitude it's no surprise you only meet "leeches."
- blankmedia, on 11/11/2009, -3/+2***** THE *Insert acronym of institution that did this study*
- spritom, on 11/11/2009, -6/+5But before cancer strikes...she's dating your local NBA team.
- yesterday00, on 11/11/2009, -3/+1Geez...almost every post about men and women there are guys who comment on how women only want money. I pity you guys who really think that's the case for all women...especially when the topic is on cancer. Maybe women stick by men that have cancer because they genuinely care and just don't up and leave like men do. It's easy to generalize but geez, this is ridiculous.
- angrytortilla, on 11/11/2009, -5/+3This is true. When my bastard father's hussy girlfriend got cancer, he ditched her outright.
- Critram, on 11/11/2009, -4/+1Social Roles are not the words I would use. They are more our animal coding. Most mammals replicate this behavior.
- lukas88, on 11/11/2009, -5/+2Maybe the "takes things too seriously" gene should be mentioned as well.
- gnomeh, on 11/11/2009, -6/+2http://www.gifbin.com/bin/seymour.gif
- lukas88, on 11/11/2009, -17/+8Men are also more likely to rape or commit violent crimes. If there is a sleezebag gene, it is on the Y chromosome.
Still, most of us are ok in that "necessary evil" sort of way.
