- ThinkBox, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3didnt catch it
- Velnich, on 02/26/2008, -5/+2Some nice pictures, but most I think felt too "artistic" for me to appreciate properly.
- ghm101, on 02/26/2008, -2/+6how sad to be you
- Velnich, on 02/26/2008, -2/+2I can see and appreciate beauty in a lot of things, but a picture of a picture on a wall does not blow me away the same way some other artistic things do.
- dontswimtoshore, on 02/26/2008, -1/+5that's why they are better than other photo-journalistic images.
- ghm101, on 02/26/2008, -2/+6how sad to be you
- jessetessej, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2Can anyone inform me on how to process photos to look like Chris Gordaneer's? I love his Massi 2 and was wondering if I someone who knows more about it than I do could give me some tips. Ty.
- Mercedes383, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4He's using burning and dodging so the image is more concentrated on what the photographer wants you to look at. Instead of using the burn and dodge tools in photoshop try using duplicate layer and multiply blending to darken the image then applying a circular gradient tool to a mask to start off. This will darken the edges and bring out the middle more. Keep using multiply and lighten/soften layers with masks to bring out what you want. You can also use similar techniques like that to modify the colours and curves selectively too. If you want the new layer you are making to only modify the immediate layer below it then select 'create clipping mask' from the layer options.
- arjung, on 02/26/2008, -0/+6damnit, no hi-res images? how're you supposed to see the world's best journalism pictures in 600px width?
- spudnic, on 02/26/2008, -1/+2High res copies of these prints have value, it's how the photographer makes a living.
I'm sure you could order a print if there's one you really like.

- pax85, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Damn it. Down already. Need a mirror please :D
- archivist, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1very inspiring for aspiring photographers
- Sabre, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4Hot Pursuit. I mean...holy hell.
- fejai, on 02/26/2008, -4/+0Yeah, photoshop is pretty cool.
- ophello, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1photojournalism isnt fake, jackass.
- fejai, on 02/26/2008, -0/+0Well, it was shot at a Hollywood set. Is that considered real photojournalism?
And if you can't see the horrid photoshop hack job in an attempt to save this shot; then you're blind and I feel sorry for you. - Murphious, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Horrid photoshop hack job?
I'm sure you can tell by the pixels ;)
- fejai, on 02/26/2008, -0/+0Well, it was shot at a Hollywood set. Is that considered real photojournalism?

- fejai, on 02/26/2008, -4/+0Yeah, photoshop is pretty cool.
- L0g1X, on 02/26/2008, -3/+4Why is it that many of the best photographs are mostly bad stuff?
- AwsmGy, on 02/26/2008, -2/+0Probably because you have no idea what a good picture is.
You = burried- mesasone, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1You're an idiot. He is not saying the best photographs are bad photography, he is talking about the subject matter often being sad and depressing.
- Saiyurie, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2because a great photograph makes the viewer feel something. often times, the most powerful photographs are of grief or poverty because that is something - especially here in america - we don't see everyday. ...or maybe because there's more "bad stuff" going on right now than good. or because we may view something as negative that another culture sees in a positive light....
- AwsmGy, on 02/26/2008, -2/+0Probably because you have no idea what a good picture is.
- zinc6471, on 02/26/2008, -5/+1is it just me, but some of it feels photoshoped (i.e. the fox)
and why must photo journalist tend to go to Africa to take pictures of people living in poverty. It seems like they are always trying bring "attention" to a certain problem but the pictures only generate a feeling of pity for viewers who then brush it off like it was nothing. I am not saying that we should ignore these people, but try to go about it in a different way so that "normal/everyday" people connect.- ophello, on 02/26/2008, -0/+8photojournalists dont cut and paste. they enhance contrast, adjust color, and dodge and burn -- NORMAL PHOTOGRAPHIC TECHNIQUES.
- Mercedes383, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Thankyou very much. I have this same discussion at almost every exhibition I do. It wears rather thin at times.
- notmiya, on 02/26/2008, -1/+2Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was taught in Photography that in order for a photo journalist to submit a picture, it can't be enhanced in anyway shape or form, no cropping, no dodging/burning, or any other kind of adjustments. It has to be completely raw, which is why it's hard to be a photo journalist. Maybe this is just for typical local newspapers, but this is what I remember from my photo teacher. Again, correct me if I'm wrong.
- ophello, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1he human eye sees more than the film, and film cannot contain the dynamic range the eye can detect.
photos arent considered "doctored" if their contrast or color is enhanced. they are considered GOOD because it approaches what the viewer saw with their EYES at the moment.
No good photographers submit raw photos unaltered. Post processing is required. Its half of being a photographer.
- ophello, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1he human eye sees more than the film, and film cannot contain the dynamic range the eye can detect.
- spiffae, on 02/27/2008, -1/+0that's all well and good, but some of the pictures on that site are cut and pasted (i'm looking at YOU, hot pursuit) - and there's a lot on those images that goes WAY beyond "normal photographic techniques" - trust me, I'm a retoucher for a living.
- ophello, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1I SERIOUSLY doubt they are cut/pasted, their reputation as photographers are on the line. you cant win a photojournalism contest with a doctored photo. You're just wrong, spiffae.
- ophello, on 02/26/2008, -0/+8photojournalists dont cut and paste. they enhance contrast, adjust color, and dodge and burn -- NORMAL PHOTOGRAPHIC TECHNIQUES.
- mariot75, on 02/26/2008, -2/+2Cant get on the site

What's so sad is that the it seems that I can't enlarge, and others can't even see it, it because the server's under heavy load... - SwampyUK, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2Higher (though still not High) rez images are available if you grab the image location and take off the '&img_size=580' off the end.

- RationalXubrnce, on 02/26/2008, -4/+2 Mental note, if you want to be an award winning photographer don't bother shooting white people.
There some fantastic shots here. - Phillzz, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1Amazing photos
- appletoapple, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3These photos are amazing. As as a print journalist, I understand just how much a great shot like these can enhance a story in ways words alone cannot.
- SydeffeX, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1The last one looks photoshopped. But I can't tell because the high res images are down.
- lallu316, on 02/26/2008, -0/+6I parsed that page and put all the pictures on a geocities page. sorry, I don't have any other hosting available to me at work :-(

If this is violating some rules, I apologize... I just found the navigation of that site cumbersome. - spiffae, on 02/27/2008, -0/+0This thing is bogus. It's a "Online awards show" for a self-promotional web site. The entries are extremely uneven in quality, and a lot of them show truly blatant photoshopping. I don't know where they got "photojournalism" for a lot of those photos, and the worlds best photojournalists (Magnum, NYT, AFP, Getty, etc.) are nowhere to be found. This is like a best of Flickr, except that the photos aren't as good as what's on flickr.
- shesmiledXidied, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1Iranian Airpistol Shooter is hot!
- czeus, on 02/27/2008, -0/+0Wow.
