- PolarBearFire, on 09/01/2009, -3/+117On the same vein, Why are there still coffee shops or restaurants? When everyone has a kitchen in theri OWN house!
- dazparkour, on 09/01/2009, -1/+101Why? Tourists don't tend to want to lug around a lot of ***** that can be stolen but still like to email home.

- KarlH, on 09/01/2009, -0/+63On a related note, why are there still phone booths?
- Oztog, on 09/01/2009, -3/+58My partner doesn't like it when I masturbate at home, but either do the guys at the internet cafe.
- IHaveIssues, on 09/01/2009, -0/+49Out of town people need a place to go to get online.
- KarlH, on 09/01/2009, -1/+36I often to go to an Internet cafe when I feel too tired to cook my own Internet or don't have any bytes in the fridge.
- 4AntiStupid, on 09/01/2009, -4/+35If I try to order up a coffee and bagel at home, I just get laughed at.

- mantis108, on 09/01/2009, -0/+25When you're in a foreign country and need to print your RyanAir plane tickets, you'll be damn glad there is one a block from your hotel.
- awtripp, on 09/01/2009, -0/+23I know right, I always bring my coffee pot on the road. There are unused outlets all over the place, just plug it in and pour some pre-ground beans in there and boom. I mean, it's so convenient, sure people may look at me funny when I'm brewing coffee on the floor of Border's and tell me to go get a cup of Seattle's best. But I just say ***** them, you know how much cheaper this is?
- wassim2k, on 09/01/2009, -0/+18We don't all live in a tech bubble like you do, good sir.
- Oztog, on 09/01/2009, -2/+20Correct, you my good sir are a scholar amongst mortal men.

- Princeamor, on 09/01/2009, -1/+17The "WHERE PEOPLE GO ONLINE" chart is going against what the article is saying...
- inactive, on 09/01/2009, -0/+16Why do people leave the house? Why do people drink coffee? Why do people use the Internet? Why do people write stupid articles?
- Gr00ver, on 09/01/2009, -5/+20*Correct. You, my good sir, are a scholar amongst mortal men.

- socomoddjob, on 09/01/2009, -2/+16for people with bad credit.
- centran, on 09/01/2009, -1/+14yep. I was just in Germany and had to use internet cafes for a number of reasons.
#1 one brand of hotel line locked their computer down so bad I couldn't transfer pictures off my camera to a usb drive.
#2 that same hotel line only offered one computer which was often being used for hours at a time
#3 not all hotels have guest computers. if you stay at a hostel or Bed and Breakfast then you most likely won't have the option of using the hotel guest computers. - nismerf, on 09/01/2009, -1/+11I think there is also a social aspect. Everything we do in the US is always in the "convenience" of our own home.
- s0nicfreak, on 09/01/2009, -1/+10Why are there still cafes when everyone has a coffee maker at home?
- Toshibi, on 09/01/2009, -0/+8dazparkour, here's some citation from a man on the front lines. I install the damn systems. We also do some fun stuff where we sell prepaid phone time and allow people to play poker machines but we have to call it a sweepstakes. in this area of NC, we now have like 20 internet cafes and it's forcing the cable company to upgrade it's services.
- darkism, on 09/01/2009, -0/+8So you can play multiplayer games with real people in a real setting, instead of alone in your bedroom?
- TheFuzzyOne, on 09/01/2009, -0/+8Internet cafes are free now? When did that happen?
- Imissnaptime, on 09/01/2009, -2/+9I heard you like to suck your own dick, pay someone to do it for you or cut that thing off.
- RaulMuadDib, on 09/01/2009, -1/+8You guys have kitchens?
- pangelovski, on 09/01/2009, -0/+6Nothing desperate with opening a "massage" parlor. That's just being smart.
Think of it, you check your email, play WoW, grab a bite and then some massage, all with a happy ending. - Spirckle, on 09/01/2009, -1/+7I am thinking of starting one up. Where I live the service sucks and some people still do not have access to either cable broadband or DSL...they can't get service even if they want it. The local cable company is trying to make people pay 100s of dollars just for a hookup.
Some places do really really still need these internet cafes. - bhuntsbarger, on 09/01/2009, -1/+6homeless need interwebz too
- gl77, on 09/01/2009, -3/+8here's your goddamn citation

happy now? - OrangeTide, on 09/01/2009, -0/+5internet service at home is like the price of 3 trips to an internet cafe.
- WhiskeyLemur, on 09/01/2009, -1/+6Psh, if we wanted "real people," we'd be out bowling (or something) instead of gaming.
- mantis108, on 09/01/2009, -0/+5That's a "Hotel" in the US definition of the word. Most places people on a budget stay in Europe as a family (not business traveler) are small hostels, efficiency hotels and residences where there is no business center. Even the efficiency 2/3 stars are 140-240 Euros a night so if you can afford a 4 star hotel w/biz amenities, more power to ya....
As far as printing the ticket at the check in counter, I believe they charge you for that. Heck, RyanAir charges you for everything, which is the downside of getting a $40 USD one-way ticket.
And, this is far from the only example of why an Internet cafe is useful.. just one experience from an actual trip I'm on as I write this as to why one might be useful. Others include: crappy bandwidth at the hotel you're staying at, expensive WiFi/internet access or just a complete lack of offering it (more common in some B&B's). I admit you need them a lot less that you used to, but they have their uses. - s0nicfreak, on 09/01/2009, -2/+6There's still phone booths? I haven't seen one in years, and it was years before that I last saw one that still had a phone in it.
- faskippy, on 09/01/2009, -0/+4Really lame article.
- inactive, on 09/01/2009, -2/+6Some people hardly use the internet enough to justify the service, so they just use internet cafes to check email or whatever. whats so strange about that?
- dazparkour, on 09/01/2009, -3/+7That a gaming company is suing does not prove that is the main reason the cafes exist.
So, I am sorry to have to digg this comment down but mark my words - if you do provide evidence I will digg all your posts back up.
I took issue with "reason there are Internet cafes here in Jacksonville mainly is because they act as gambling parlors" - I am pretty sure there are at least one other demographic, since internet cafes exist outside Jacksonville and in places you can gamble. - 4rp4n3t, on 09/01/2009, -1/+5You are absolutely right, of course. Everyone who needs to access the internet, for whatever reason, has a house to get hooked up in, enough income for a high speed connection, and a shiny fast laptop to take to their nearest ***** [sic], where they can afford to sit around drinking coffee and munching delicious croissant for hours each day, surfing, emailing their friend Farquar and braying into their iPhones...
- Oztog, on 09/01/2009, -1/+5Happy ending?
- Mike17102, on 09/01/2009, -0/+4For drug dealers and pimps.
- 6453893, on 09/01/2009, -2/+6They are on the decline. I knew my nearest web café was getting desperate when it suddenly became a combo internet café/massage parlor.
- gl77, on 09/01/2009, -0/+3let me rephrase......the main reason internet cafes in Jacksonville stay open is because most of the people that go there are there to gamble. if they no longer offered this service, i dont really think they would stand a chance of staying open. Ive been to several of them around town and can vouch for this fact, sorry i have no official "citation" but my own experiences inside several internet cafes around the jacksonville area (Not all of them ran by Allied Veterans, mind you). hell, you dont even have to go into one to know what it's primary purpose is....there is one about a half mile away from me that just opened up about 6 months ago that has a big sign out front with the name of the place and under the name there is "777" in an old-time font just like you would see on a slot machine. and with names like "Cyber Cafe Easy Money" and "Vegas Sevens", it's not too hard to figure out what they are mainly in business for. if you want proof of those names, just google them.
