- psion01, on 11/11/2009, -0/+23I rather wish someone had organized an intervention with Clark Flood on his bad writing. This was some of the most overwrought, hyperbole-driven junk I've read since the eighth grade (and trust me, I read a LOT of the stuff I wrote back then, so I know what I'm talking about here). But I'm clinging to a desperate, irrational hope that there's a nugget of talent remaining to be polished.
No, no, strike all that. It was an ... um ... interesting article. - Nick217, on 11/10/2009, -2/+24as a student who went to a school with a large faction of avant garde artists, i was constantly asked for, and saw refutation, of my opinion of classmates' horrible sculpture, mixed-media and photoshop abominations. i wish i had this back then.
- aadsfasdf, on 11/11/2009, -0/+17"it's not my thing"
* easy to remember
* true
* not speaking for everyone ("it sucks", "its interesting", "its good")
* reminds the other person that your taste is subjective
* works regardless of subject matter
try it today! - nullcodes, on 11/11/2009, -2/+13If I can't say "dude, that ***** is ***** uglier than your face" then I'm not really talking to a friend.
If I can't be frank with someone, he or she's not my friend. - Amadeus2490, on 11/11/2009, -0/+10If you're frank, can I still be Garth?

- uruururr, on 11/11/2009, -0/+9you didn't read the article.
- computershack, on 11/11/2009, -0/+8If its crap, tell them "It could win the Turner Prize".
By doing that you're telling them it is utter *****, as nothing decent has ever won, but they'll take it as a compliment. - Gerakis100, on 11/11/2009, -1/+8Lie, sell shoes, and lie
- RAAFStupot, on 11/11/2009, -0/+7Just say:
"It is bravely challenging the current socio-historical paradigm."
Works both ways - it's an insult from your end and a complement at your friend's end. - pe5t1lence, on 11/11/2009, -0/+6Can you make Liberty hotter?
- Mazrin, on 11/11/2009, -1/+6Internet courage to the rescue!
Get over yourselves, guys. You aren't all cool suave logic machines that tell it like it is.
You're all just normal people, and as such, just as likely to awkwardly say "Oh yeah, it's good" as anyone else is or isn't, depending on how close they are to the person they are talking to. - andoru, on 11/11/2009, -0/+5You are not my friend.
- pimpofpixels, on 11/11/2009, -1/+6What do you think of my art?

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/1254/bloodstained ... - nichiplechle, on 11/11/2009, -1/+6I'm not that nice...If it sucks, i just say that it sucks....
- eanbowman, on 11/11/2009, -0/+4Or you could be honest and offer help if you know what you're talking about.
I firmly believe that if I'm a good friend, I owe it to them to be honest.
* "You need to work on anatomy more. Study proportions."
* "You should look up colour theory."
etc...
If they hate me for it initially, fine. Inevitably they appreciate the honesty at some point. If they don't come to appreciate it, they're no kind of person I'd want as a friend.
Also, the idea that someone who doesn't make great art can't critique it is absurd. Everyone has a sense of aestetics. To consider someone's opinion less simply because they don't make art (or art in the same form as the artist) is just plain wrong. - nichiplechle, on 11/11/2009, -0/+4Could you draw Anton Ego ?
- wahgnube, on 11/11/2009, -1/+5My answer depends on whether I am sleeping with her or not.
(There, I said it. I've been wanting to get this off my chest for a long time now.) - czarcasm, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3"You aren't all cool suave logic machines"

You're projecting.
I watch Dr Phil. - pimpofpixels, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3you are now >:)
- pimpofpixels, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2I don't do a lot of political art, but that's the one piece I did inspired by my opposition to the war.
In that piece, titled "blood stained liberty", the figure in the center represents the spirit of liberty. She's shackled to the bodies of dead American Soldiers and Iraqis. She's strong, but she's strained by the weight of the atrocities carried out in her name, and the blood is seeping up her dress. The world trade center represents that tragedy, while the All-Seeing Eye represents the mystery still surrounding it.
I love America, and that's while I feel so strongly about opposing our foreign invasions which I feel are destroying what America represents. The image is not Anti-American. Liberty is strong and dignified, but also in turmoil. The flag is majestic, but also singed by the fires of war, and terms like liberty and freedom have been cheapened by their frivolous misuse in the marketing Bush's invasions.
You may have been sarcastic, but the piece, while anti-war, is very much pro America. - zbeast, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2it it's crap, I say it's crap. if it has some redeeming values I'll say so... some ugly art, looks like they
have value if they were better done. If I think they should give up... I'll say so.. - feedroh, on 11/11/2009, -1/+2This seemed relevant
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9myaiQs3GI - Locastus, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1Well, I think its a well executed piece but I'm not American so I find the symbolism in it a little melodramatic.
Blood and fire is necessary to maintain the Empire that the US stole from Britain. If the USA is too squeamish for these things then it should stop with the "We're number 1" nonsense and just bend over for China.
Do one about how you think the situation should be. Appeal to the higher ideals - justice, strength and honour - then I think I would like it better. - masivemunkey, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1Too busy.
- gordo987, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1you obviously hate america
- HATU8, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1The crap that sells for millions is about as good as the latest brittany spears album, people aren't buying the piece, they're buying the name. Good art is hard to find, but you can often find it for dirt cheap at a no name gallery. Often times directly from the artist for even cheaper.
- eanbowman, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1Just as likely? Perhaps.
But I'd much rather be honest. It's easier, it makes me feel good and if I'm kind about it I feel as if I've helped someone.
As well, I don't want someone for a friend if they can't take honest criticism. - stompk291, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1since i hate about 99% of the crap that sells for millions, i'm obviously not qualified to judge art. If I think it's great, that means it's probably not worth a dime.
- diemunkiesdie, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1If you can edit your comment, you can just as easily delete it. Try it out! Post a comment and click on edit, look on the bottom right, there is some red text that says "Delete"! Click on it and see what happens!
- HawgFrog, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1I'd like it better if it was painted on black velvet.
- HATU8, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1Don't Lie, tell the truth. If it is any artist worth their salt, they went to school, and nothing you can say will come close to the demeaning experience of a freshman crit at a decent art school. There the teachers are weeding out those that might run away crying, and there are many that should. Art is not easy and if anyone could do it, then there wouldn't be any reason to call it art.
Even if you like it, be mean. Any artist is discouraged by long winded comments that can be summed up by saying I like it. Every good artist want's a well thought out and informed thrashing every now and again.
If it's a friend--that decided to try their hand and just wanted to paint--be kind and tell them that you like it. If they think they're an artist verbally abuse them, they'll be better off for it.
(These comments all come from someone who hates being patronised through compliments when I'm seeking opinions.) - blankoblanko, on 11/11/2009, -0/+0If he's just a friend lie. If he's a close friend tell him the truth.
- stompk291, on 11/11/2009, -1/+1yes, and stop calling me Shirley.
- kplo, on 11/11/2009, -2/+1Nice. I was just about to post that myself.
