What Ansel Adams Saw Through His Lens
travel.nytimes.com — Adams first visited Yosemite in 1916 when he was 14 years old. On that trip, he hopped up on a tree stump to take a photo of Half Dome, then stumbled, headfirst, and accidentally pushed the shutter release. The upside-down image remained one of Adams’s favorites, he wrote in his autobiography.

- timfrietas, on 04/28/2008, -6/+6"They remember his photo of a juniper tree they saw in a museum, on a coffee cup or a monthly calendar. Ansel Adams’s work, in some ways, is the best unpaid advertising a national park could get."
That's not entirely accurate: "Adams was the recipient of three Guggenheim fellowships during his career, the first in 1946 to photograph every National Park."
(from the Wikipedia entry)- ahoy, on 04/28/2008, -1/+10the Guggenheim is not affiliated with National Parks fool.
Ansel Adams was a key figure in the preservation of many national parks because his photo's inspired people to go out and see their beauty.

- dtele, on 04/28/2008, -6/+2Weird - I made a comment yesterday in a digital photography article about Ansel Adams.
thanks - one of my favourite photographers. - UGM2099, on 04/28/2008, -10/+4A factual song about Ansel Adams: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X70FBQNUUms
- lfernandez91, on 04/28/2008, -4/+1What? not a rickroll?!
- imacmike, on 04/28/2008, -1/+2Not Rick Roll. Links to the song by Liam Lynch from his podcast Lynchland.
Ansel Adams: He's a man.
- makemoneynotart, on 04/28/2008, -16/+4Fake, he totally photoshopped those mountains. If you look at the snow carefully you can see it's really just cocaine he glued on top. Like Glitter n' Macoroni.
- alwilson, on 04/28/2008, -0/+2You are working way to hard trying to be funny.
- chrissku, on 04/28/2008, -11/+5The greatest thing is he did it all without photoshop. That's why photographs are less impressive today. You don;t know what's real and what's fake.
- locnguyen, on 04/28/2008, -1/+8Back then, it was called a darkroom.
- santaliqueur, on 04/28/2008, -0/+3We still call it that, old-timer.
- DeathJux, on 04/28/2008, -1/+13Like any art, the further it's refined, the more it's capable of. Who cares whether it's "real" or "fake," other than other artisans who value the work more than the output? I prefer having my imagination unbridled by technology, instead of hampered by limitations.
Frankly, I rather enjoy that I can put in 1/10th of the time for anywhere from "almost-as-good" to "better" results as you could get with hours in the darkroom. - ahoy, on 04/28/2008, -0/+7Fact: Ansel Adams did more "manipulation" in the dark room than I have skill to do in photoshop.
- locnguyen, on 04/28/2008, -1/+8Back then, it was called a darkroom.
- abben, on 04/28/2008, -7/+1great heros where glasses

- santaliqueur, on 04/28/2008, -0/+3Is that a very short poem that is missing a comma?
- Hoogs, on 04/28/2008, -1/+19It's cool to see this on Digg, since I just did a project on him for my photography class. I know nobody cares, just thought I'd say it.
- inspecality, on 04/28/2008, -0/+10I care.
- Jawsh91, on 04/28/2008, -1/+4As do I.
- ThinkBox, on 04/28/2008, -0/+5That's cool!
My photography professor worked with him for around 15 years. He also worked with Robert Heimecken and Imogen Cunningham. Ansel was such a glorious artists. I have tons of awesome stories about him. I shot large format til my camera got jacked from my car a few weeks ago, the guys thought it was a box and ripped it apart... pretty sad stuff.
- inspecality, on 04/28/2008, -0/+10I care.
- gak001, on 04/28/2008, -1/+5I wish more people would go out and experience the national parks in the West and Midwest. We have so much beauty in this country. Maybe after seeing it, people would stand behind greats like Teddy Roosevelt and do more to try to protect our treasures.
- JoshuaLowe, on 04/28/2008, -0/+5Every time I press the shutter I ask myself what Ansel Adams would think of the result.
- moolaismyfriend, on 04/28/2008, -15/+2I enjoyed this article when I read it yesterday.
It's a shame so many conservative bible thumping rednecks will never read this stuff because they are told by hate filled white trash talking heads on Faux News that the NYT = the devil.- skinjester, on 04/28/2008, -4/+1wait a second - you're saying they can read? when did that happen?
- barfooz, on 04/28/2008, -2/+4I find it humorous that you bash one group's media outlet of choice while lamenting that they bash your group's media outlet of choice. But truly, your ability to stereotype and generalize is quite remarkable.

- sleeknerve, on 04/28/2008, -0/+4My grandparents live in Yosemite and its the perfect place, almost always sunny weather non winter time. It really is one of the most beautiful places you can go to. The outdoor scene there is incredible too.
- scobleizer, on 04/28/2008, -8/+3We got to spend 24 hours with Michael Adams, Ansel's son, and we did lots of live cell phone videos: http://scobleizer.com/2008/04/26/kodak-moment-foll ...

- Mpwns, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1I'm not even on THC yet and have no clue to what your saying. none of it makes any sense.
- eleete, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1Ansel was incredible with a camera, he saw what film wanted to see, and then figured out how to show us that image. He used very unconventional methods to get exactly the image he felt. When one studies photography the word exposure is never clear until you read his books. Photography is a very technical art, and no one brought those two points together like Ansel. He truly was a gift to the world.
- toecutter169, on 04/28/2008, -0/+2Ansel Adams may seem cliche'd and 'done' nowadays with his pictures seemingly everywhere and all over books and things, but put any of the best nature pictures you can find on Digg or Flickr up against his, and Adam's stuff will win out nearly every time.

- ml25, on 04/29/2008, -0/+0A fabulous reminder of how important the accident can be to creativity. A wonderful reminder of a lovely place I visited last year in conjunction with the Yosemite Writers' Conference. Yum!
