- nico623, on 01/19/2008, -6/+2Some on these are cool...some are lame...but since when the hell can anyone rename a TOY as 'designer blah blah blah' and charge like 80 fricking dollars !??
Gimme 20 bucks back in the day and I could buy 3 EXO Squad action figures and have months of entertainment.- deadzebra, on 01/19/2008, -0/+13Well most of them are 'designer' as they are designed and produced by independent artists based on their original artwork and imagery instead of being based off of a television property or license. Also they cost more to produce because they are often made in incredibly small runs (by toy industry standards) of 100-1000 pieces. The highest cost of toy production is the mold cost, with something like a gi joe that cost is spread out over millions of units, for a figure with 500 copies, that cost drives the price of each piece up quickly.
I design and produce some of these 'designer toys' that cost a lot, so I have a pretty good idea of how it works!

- december, on 01/19/2008, -1/+9As an avid fan, I have to agree that the word "toys" isn't always the best description for everybody. Just as the comments have show, the word "toys" denote almost something petty, something you did when you were a kid.
If you've ever picked up a kid robot box, on the bottom is the line "This is not a toy, this is a piece of art". If you think it if like that, it makes sense. They are miniature pieces of art.
And yes I have many of them sitting around my desk. Great points of conversation. - thebellmaster1x, on 01/19/2008, -2/+4So, are we going to ignore the obvious sexual implications of the term "vinyl toys"?
- december, on 01/19/2008, -1/+1Haha, that never occurred to me till right now. Thank you.
+1 to the sexual innuendo list.

- diecastbeatdown, on 01/19/2008, -1/+2gotta love the vinyl.
- deathtoartists, on 01/19/2008, -0/+1These toys are directly influenced by graffiti culture, which is a double plus equals good thing to me.
- jiveturkeyblues, on 01/19/2008, -1/+2these could be cool..too bad they all basically look exactly the same.
- SwankRock3000, on 01/19/2008, -0/+7I was really big into these (I have quite a few of the ones pictured in the article), but the hobby turns really ugly when beanie-baby syndrome kicks in and you have "investors" camping outside stores and bringing kids along to take advantage of the one-per-customer rule. The companies that make them just feed into it too, by making the best designs the hardest ones to find. I didn't think it was possible, but the hype and greed around these things has actually made buying toys not fun.
In a couple years they'll go the way of beanie babies, pogs, early 90s comic books, et al. - deadnoob, on 01/19/2008, -0/+2i collect vinyl. i like it, but it gets very expensive.
- iansides, on 01/19/2008, -0/+1as I skimmed the titles, all I saw was: "vinyl toys," "invasion," and what I thought was "snatches"...
- SLockhart, on 01/19/2008, -0/+1Sorry those aren't toys. You can't do anything with tem.
- Scheissen, on 01/19/2008, -0/+1for "designer toys" they are ugly
- vinylart, on 01/20/2008, -2/+0I don't understand the use of "toys" to describe these mini sculptures. They are so creative and fun! I do know that if the word is dropped, I'm going to get even more traffic from people looking for something else. I feel bad having chosen the name for my art, as I didn't know about the "toys" at that point. But, in any event, I wish I had the money and space to collect some!
Peace.
