I'm having trouble deciding. - XeroXenith, on 07/05/2009, -1/+10I don't think it's linked that way. I think it's more due to the idea that people should just be nice to each other; much more prevalent in Japan than in the West. Being nice = generally not raping.
For example, my friend's school had a Japanese exchange student a few years ago, who asked why we have locks on our school lockers. He said "so people don't take your things". Her response was priceless - "why would people take things that isn't theirs?"

Since Ukraine was previously part of the soviet union, it was called "na Ukrajini," or "on Ukraine." This type of usage is for a physical region, not a government. For countries one would use "v Ukrajini." or "in Ukraine."
For whatever reason it is inaccurately assumed that "the Ukraine" translates to "na Ukrajini" and "Ukraine" translates to "v Ukrajini."
